  1. When I sync a page it appears in the favorites list, but it is greyed out. I click on it in the favorites list on the PPC and it says the page cannot be found. But, like you, I can download the main page (www.geocaching.com) and other pages. Not sure what the deal is, but it is probably due to the syncronization mechanism though. Now is a good time to plug the pocket queries that is available to subscribing members. It is awesome if you have a PocketPC, you can download all the waypoints that meet a specific criteria (type, distance, status, age, etc). They show up as a MobiPocket eBook format, and you can look up the cache descriptions from the first page. Extremely useful, in fact, I would say it is better than using the browser on the PocketPC for that. Check it out. If you find a way around the sync problems, let me know. Rosco
  2. I must agree with this, I use the pocket queries and download a bunch of traditional caches, in order to just pop up my GPS and go find a cache. A couple of times I've come across caches that aren't traditional, since the cache isn't at the coords. I would agree with another cache type or some other way to differentiate that the cache ISN'T at the coords supplied.
  3. I just recently decided to use a 'signature' trade item. Since I was getting frustrated finding decent items to use for trade. What I did was to make a nice mixed CD (case and cover, etc). They are fairly cheap and easy for me to make, and they are a signature item. I've only had a chance to trade this item once, but it was picked up on the 2nd find after me, so it can't be too bad. I guess I'll find out if people like the mix.

  5. It does work, but you do have to be careful when you 'grab' the highlighted waypoints. Make sure you click on the text then drag them over. I still sometimes seem to miss it though.
  6. I'm pretty sure you can do the above with the Pocket Queries. It gives incentive to active cachers to pay for a charter account by NOT making the 'Nearest Geocache(s)' search very robust. You can select not to have caches show up from Canada. If you need to have the query done immediately a little trick is to select today as the day to run the query and save it. It will fire off the report *immediately*. And if you already have the waypoints in your GPS you don't need to run the query repeatedly (saves time). If you only want the new ones in the area, again Pocket Queries can do it. For the most part you can get rid of (ignore) cache classes, but you cannot specify a specific cache (GC_XYZ) to ignore. For a vast majority of the users I think this is quite adequate. I also don't see Groundspeak changing the 'Nearest Geocache(s)' page anytime soon since it gives people incentives to register.
  7. I'd like the option of "doesn't matter" in the poll. I have a 14 channel FRS radio. All I need now is the channel number to leave it on while geocaching. Great idea to do this.

  9. I use my GPS to track how fast my boat is going and get an ETA for my destination. I also use it mark spots of interest or for where I've dropped crab pots.

  11. Suggestion: Name the files that of the query. So instead of what I'm getting: 181.loc and 181.prc I could get Name_of_my_query.prc and .loc. Thanks keep up the kick butt work. As for the MobiReader, while it is another app to install, it works fine on my PocketPC. My only gripe is the copy issue (less than 100 chars).
  12. I hid my first geocache. I actually forgot some of the things I wanted to put in it (DOH), but I managed to put these things in there. And I went with the unused TravelBug idea. Check it out. * Travel bug (brand new tags, unused)tb2a9c * Teddy's Traveling Dog bug TB2A9C * Glass angel fish * Box of Snaps * Superball * Bottle of Bubbles * Duck Wind up toy * Game Chips (for poker) [This message was edited by RoscoP on July 12, 2002 at 05:28 PM.]
  13. I just added my picture not too long ago. It took a day before the changes appeared on the forum. I think the bulletin board software caches your user info (including pic) and gets updated later. I bet you you'll see your pic in all your posts tomorrow.

  15. Forgive my ignorance, but what is dowsing?
  16. I found my eTrex at http://www.onlinemarine.com for a pretty good price. Best I could find at the time (around 6 months ago). Good luck.

  18. Travel bugs are a great idea, I bought a couple of these (the 4 pack I think). I wanted one for myself and a friend, but I hadn't really decided what to do with the other 2. I think maybe I'll put one of those in there.
  19. I ran across this a while back when looking into digital cameras. Found it quite interesting. It gives a breakdown and ranking about the power contained in various rechargable battery brands. Battery Comparision
  20. I doubt I'll do a signature item, at least not now. I don't do enough caching for that I think. Since this will be the first one I've placed I don't mind spending a few bucks on it. Kind of fun to think about someone getting something cool. Unfortunately, I haven't come up with many 'cool' ideas yet.

  22. I'm about ready to place my first cache. I have a location picked out, got a container, got some goodies. I want to put in 'something special' for the first person who finds it. I've seen references about this in other caches, but they didn't say what they put in there, and I haven't been first to find one yet. So, I'm wondering, what are some good ideas for cache goodies for the first finder. Can be almost anything, something I have or something I would end up buying. If I buy it I think the most I'd want to spend would be $10. Any suggestions?
