  1. Does it cause any significant hit on battery life?
  2. But, it's RELIABLE and built like a brick you-know-what. They're still in demand, too. Take a look at current prices. They're more than what I paid new. The 60CSx has anything anyone would ever need in an outdoor GPS. That thing will get you out of a jam and get you home more reliably than just about any other consumer GPS out there. And, despite what anyone thinks, you don't *need* a built-in camera, paperless caching, etc.
  3. Nothing wrong with stuff made in Taiwan. MUCH better than China. The build quality on my 60CSx and Montana 600 was excellent.
  4. It' doesn't come with the rechargeable battery? Even my "low end" Montana 600 came with one.
  5. Unless you wear out the latching mechanism and/or gasket. Everything wears out, sure, but I've used my 60CSX for 5 years, heavily, and never wore that latch/gasket out. Why would I believe that I would on my Oregon 600? Oh, I don't know... A sneaking suspicion that the case/latch/gasket area isn't anywhere near as robust as your (and mine) 60CSx?

  7. Well, hopefully it does change with those new V5 maps. When are those coming out? As for loading all 6000+ tiles on my (now returned) Montana, it will let you do it just fine. And, it wasn't that hard at all to see gaping holes in coverage because they still showed up at pretty decently zoomed out levels.
  8. Are you sure you aren't confusing the 100k and 24k maps? The 100k maps are a single US map of roughly 500 tiles total. The limit is 4000 for the Oregon and Montanas, so it should fit fine on any device. The 24k maps on the other hand, seem to be around 9000 tiles for the 48 states. That's not going to work at all. And it is one helluva expense. As I said before, with TOPO on the DVD, no, they're not. The map is broken into 6000+ tiles to be more compatible with older units that had tiny memories. Smaller tiles made those units more flexible than needing the next HUGE tile over...and not being able to fit it with the larger tiles on the TOPO maps that COME ON THE UNIT. This is a distinction just about every one who's spent time with multiple Garmin handheld units should know by now. And, freakin' dadgum it to hell with Garmin and the 4000 tile limit...AGAIN...
  9. Or, it should use the memory card, with space only being limited by the size of the card, like virtually every other digital camera in existence...
  10. That's completely different from having it on DVD. The tiles on the pre-installed TOPO are much larger so you won't ever hit the tile number limit.
  11. And, you're absolutely sure you didn't have any missing areas? Awfully strange that my newer Montana couldn't do it without moving/renaming files around on the card, which required the use of a computer.
  12. Just curious, do you know how many map tiles that is? IIRC, it's about 6000 tiles. Maybe a bit more.
  13. So, how many map tiles will this thing allow in a single map? Can it fit ALL of Garmin's US TOPO on the unit and have it ALL available at any time for field access without having to rename files? Having multiple map files on a micro SD card that require a computer to access/move/rename doesn't count. Both my old 60CSX (hard 2025 map tile limit) and my returned Montana 600 (approx 4000 map tile limit, per Garmin) couldn't do it.
  14. Like on the 450, the temperature reading only works with the temperature sensor (which I don't have). Can't imagine that'd it be any better/worse than the small sensors you find for things like the Honeywell/Acurite temperature devices available. Then where is it pulling the temp data from in your screenshots?
  15. Yeah, okay, I can see the benefit for the guy with the 20% discount. And, yes, you're right about those return policies. I had my Montana for a few months and returned it for a full refund because I just couldn't bring myself to like it for hiking due to it's size. LL Bean refunded it no problem and, hey, that's what their warranty says... Return anything for any reason at any time if you're not 100% satisfied. I won't even mention what pair of hiking boots I'm on now...
  16. Why do people even bother pre-ordering things like this? What, so you can have it a few days earlier than just ordering it the day it's finally released? These units aren't like ammo... They'll be available everywhere and it's ALWAYS a good idea to let others do the beta testing and see their reviews because we all know it won't be perfect from Garmin.
  17. Same philosophy here... I returned my Montana 600 for a full refund and will wait to see how this Oregon shakes out. My 60CSx is doing just fine. Like it has been for many years...
  18. Amazon is still showing April Fool's Day here in the U.S.
  19. looks like that 10% replaced 15% from last week, dang. I should have ordered already. I wonder how often they have these promotions Email them and ask them to refund the extra percentage. I got a 10% off email coupon a couple of days after I received my Montana 600. I emailed them about it and they credited the 10% back to my card, no problem. Since you can return anything for ANY reason, believe me... They do not want an "open box" return because you sent it back for a full refund and re-ordered the same thing again with the coupon.

  21. It can only help Groundspeak to get their stuff running on the new Garmins. And, I'm betting they will. It works on all the currently compatible stuff, right? And, regarding your "personal conversation", if they don't "get with the times"? Well, I won't be shedding any tears in my beer if they suddenly find themselves irrelevant if/when something else takes over.
  22. Oh they will. As you said, you can't alienate a large section of your users. That's not what Atlas said.
  23. Well, whatever. If they're smart, they'll do EVERYTHING to ensure compatibility with any and all new Garmin units.
