  1. What the heck does the electronic compass have to do with the unit's accuracy, as determined by the quality of satellite reception at the time?
  2. Congress and that's why we're all fooked...
  3. Justify it all you want. It's all just more TAXES. $25 for a 7 day pass at the Grand Canyon? BFD. If you just want to hike around for a few hours, it's still $25. It's all BS. These areas were here thousands of years ago and they'll still be here thousands of years from now...
  4. Um, I wasn't talking about technical issues/conflicts. I was talking about the government's NEVER ENDING quest to squeeze more revenue (i.e. TAX) out of the population. It's BECAUSE GPS use is so widespread, that it is a vast untapped resource of money just waiting to be collected. And they, along with pretty much everyone else, know MANY people would pay the tax, subscription fee, whatever to use it... Oh, sure...they'd bitch about it, but they'd pay it... Everyone from the casual user to the airlines, shipping and trucking industries, etc... Again, I'm pretty surprised they haven't tried to implement this or that I haven't even heard about it on a higher level than personal musings. For those claiming, "But, but, but!!!! There's too many receivers already out there!!!" Yeah right... Do you really think the government cares about personally owned GPS systems and the need to potentially have to replace them, be they in the hands of the likes of us here or commercial enterprises? Really??? They'd make us sh!tcan our gasoline burning cars TODAY if it were feasible and "public outcry" would be the LEAST of their concerns. I'm still waiting for an answer about how the government would *never* tax us again for something for whch we already *paid*. See National (and local) Park access example above...
  5. FOR NOW. Doesn't mean they won't turn it off in a heartbeat in the future. Look at the analog to digital TV transition the FCC (i.e. government) forced on everyone...
  6. Are you serious? Like they wouldn't "tax" us again to use GPS? We are taxed multiple times to use things we ALREADY paid for via taxes. Just try to go to the Grand Canyon and park and get into the National Park facilities for free. What's it up to these days? $40...$50/car? It was $25 or so last time I went years ago. Um, don't we ALREADY pay federal income tax to fund the Department of the Interior, which includes parks and recreation? Even the local parks around here in Prescott, AZ make you pay to park even though we pay state income tax, city taxes, property taxes, etc. The government, federal or local, does not give a dadgum and they'd love to tax us again and again and again for the same things if they can get away with it...and they do...
  7. Good to know. Now, I'm puttin' my tinfoil hat on and hoping no goobermint types are around... I'm truly surprised they haven't started implementing a way to charge for GPS usage as another TAX for the civilian side. Seems like it would be something pretty easy to work into the new satellites/upgrades. Require subscription type BS along the lines of XM radio. I can see it happening, though. Hell, we already pay federal income tax, state income tax (most of us), local state and city taxes, blah, blah...and STILL have to friggin' pay to get into national parks and such. Why not TAX us again on something we've already paid for? Hope it never happens, but I won't be surprised if/when it does...
  8. I wonder how long until all of our current GPS units become "legacy" units and no longer work with the new satellite transmissions...
  9. In that case, most any Nuvi will work. Get a higher end one, though, because I'm not sure about the very basic 200 series. You post didn't really relay your request well. You made it sound like you wanted a car GPS to put in coordinates for geocaching use in the field. And, I'm not the only one who interpreted it that way...
  10. Isn't entering coordinates manually, in the fiekd, also "old school" since the fancy dancy Oregon owners can just beam to each other? And, I don't have to enter coordinates from Geocaching.com with my 60CSx and a free membership. I can send them and the name of the cache just fine via USB.
  11. Well, at least it ain't $8 billion going to welfare or BS bailouts and it's something I can actually use!
  12. Yes, but not everyone is some super dooper mondo cacher, either. MANY people use GPS outside of "the game"...even highly advanced users. You can still send coordinates directly to it for FREE and it's no big deal to scratch out some hints on a piece of paper for the casual cacher. Believe me, I do my share of caching and never found the "paperless" aspect of the 60CSx to be a problem. But, then again, I knew that up front so I wasn't disappointed down the road, either. Are you honestly discounting the 60CSx as a GREAT overall handheld (even for caching) because it isn't fully "paperless"?
  13. Oh yes, definitely. Nuvis are great for the car in a SHELTERED environment. I, too, have an old Nuvi 660 that just keeps on ticking with the latest 2011.20 map update. I also have a 60CSx this is, without a doubt, one of the greatest consumer handheld GPS units ever made. And, the good this is they're selling at FANTASTIC prices because of the new 62 updated that's supposed to be released this summer. Even before that announcement, I got my 60CSx bundled with Garmin US TOPO 2008 for under $250 on Amazon.
  14. I wouldn't recommend caching with a Nuvi. They're not rugged at all, nor are they even water resistant. Only the Nuvi 500 series are "crossover" types that TRY to be as good as a dedicated handheld outdoors type GPS but...they aren't. Then there's the proprietary rechargeable batteries for the 500 series or the non-user replaceable built in battery of many other Nuvis. MUCH better to just be able to use cheap AAs or AA rechargeables...
  15. Lots of broken glass out in the desert/woods around here from all the shooting on public land in Arizona. It IS a mess...and very difficult to pick up when the bottles are blown to bits.
  16. Around here, aggressive dogs not on leashes or not being controlled by their owners are likely to be shot. A LOT of people legally carry firearms on the trails here in Arizona.
