  1. If you opt to become a premium member you can generate pocket queries with up to 500 waypoints in each. Combine the pq's with some inexpensive software (I use GSAK and Cachemate but there are others) and you can load the entire state on to your GPSr with little effort....subject to the limitations of your GPSr.
  2. On a great day, I'll lock on to 11 birds but 6-8 is more typica and some days I'll only get 3 or 4. Oddly enough I don't seem to get any closer to the cache with 11 than I do with 6. (Explorist 500)
  3. A cache in an interesting place. Good Job.
  4. Don't assume anything. A well hidden micro can blend in so well with it's surrounding that in some cases I've seen people (me included) pick them up, decide it's not the cache and keep right on looking.
  5. If your intention is to replace a "poor" cache with a "better" cache. Who could object. I wish more people would do that.
  6. I'll usually watch list my dnf's. If it's an easy cache, I'll wait until there is activity before trying again. If it's a hard cache, I'll assume that I just missed it and try over and over again. Hard caches are denoted by two things 1) The rating which is often misleading 2) Found It's sprinkled with a bunch of DNFs (usually more accurate) If a cache is missing you will usually see all Found It's and then after a sepcific date all DNF's. This is just another reason to log those DNF's.
  7. The most I've logged is 8 DNF's in one day. Logging the DNF gives me a record of what I did that day, and hopefully the cache owner gets a chuckle out of knowing that someone looked for the cache but was totally blind that day. Log them, don't delete them, keep the history of the cache intact. Often the DNF's are the most fun to read.
  8. I believe it can be used with up to three GPSr's. (I've used mine with two) If that's not enough, just uninstall and reinstall and you get three more.
  9. I think the limits of the unit are 200 in the Geocache Mode or 500 in the POI mode. I just use the POI folder ........... don't know what the advantage of the Geocache Mode is. If you get a PDA for paperless caching its not much harder using GSAK.
  10. Either plug the GPS into the USB slot or pull the card out and plug it into a card reader. You PC should recognize it as a drive letter, then just drag and drop into the folder you want to put it in. I usually plug the GPS in first and then just export directly to the SD card.
  11. People tend to over-rate the difficulty of the cache and overlook the "don't worry about the last few feet" part.. Make sure the rating is appropriate and that the description is accurate. Difficult caches are fun, but not if you are expecting a drive up. Drive ups can be fun, but not if you are expecting something more challenging.
  12. Many caches are accessible by boat but don't require a boat and would not necessarily be rated a 5*. I don't know much about the new "caches along a route feature", but it may be possible to adapt that to search for caches along a river or along the shoreline of a lake.
  13. There goes all your free time. Welcome.
  14. On the other hand......it's not about the numbers. It's about having fun.
  15. Some people do, but that makes their stats worthless.
  16. If your kids are having a problem with the dnf's, go out and find the cache first and then come back with your kids. There's no shame in dnf's. I dnf'd 2 yesterday and another 8 today.
  17. I've had good responses from active cachers. There are some that don't respond and those are also the ones that don't maintain their caches after putting them out. In that cace I just log a dnf, ignore the cache and move on.

    Backpacks

A friend of mine slipped and broke a leg and couldn't get anyone's attention for a good half hour. After that I started carrying a whistle. You can be very near a lot of traffic but if you're not mobile it can be hard to get anyone's attention. (I also carry a cell phone).
  19. I find I get a more stable read in the afternoon than in the morning.
  20. We often find that level 4 caches are more difficult than level 5 caches. Just because you need a boat (or a short swim) doesn't make it particularly challenging. [that's not to say that most level 5 are not - just not in this area]
  21. Welcome ............. don't get addicted now
  22. Quick thinking............and yet another reason to own a GPSr.
