  1. True North is how most maps are drawn. You can adjust the needle on many compasses to account for local magnetic declination and point to true north also. Makes it less confusing if you don't have to remember to add/subtract the declination to get a true heading. Regards, Indybill
  2. Just received my 60CS yesterday and alread love this thing!! I can get 3-5 sats sitting in my livingroom...awesome reception. I'll be looking for an alternate type of mounting system for car and bicycle use though...the garmin mount looks too wimpy for the bouncing around it'll get. I've downloaded all of the Oregon maps from City Select v6.0 into it with a little extra around the edges. It only took 38MB for everything, leaving room for some topo maps too...after payday that is. The best most usfull advice so far has been 'play with it'. I've spent about 5 hours doing just that and have found the menu system of the 60CS very intuitive. Thanks for everyone who has been contributing to this thread, I've found a lot of very helpful info here. Now I've got to get started playing around with GSAK for loading some caches into this for next weekend. I can't wait to get outdoors with this unit. EDIT: Ordered the RAM mounts for car and bicycle...that'll get 'er dun! Regards, Indybill
  3. Which gpsr do you have? I ask because there are some gpsr's that will (with Garmin's city select software, and maybe their other software too) allow you to find a location based on address. I know the Garmin GpsMap60C and CS will do this because that's what I bought. Regards, Indybill
  4. Got an answer back from Maptech: My question to them: I'm purchasing a Garmin GpsMap60cs and am wondering if Terrain Navigator yet supports the usb connection (it did not as of 6/04). If not as yet, will this issue be addressed in future versions? Thanks for your help. Their answer: Hi Bill, Our development team is working on that. There should be a version 6.04 released within 4-6 weeks that will have a new GPS wizard that recognizes the USB for certain models that we will test on. It will be a downloadable upgrade. Thanks have a great day, Erika Looks like they know they've got to provide usb support to keep up with the new gpsr hardware. Regards, Indybill
  5. I'm new to this stuff, but I think that I've found what you're looking for. Here's Oregon's maps. This site also has links to other state sites here. Regards, Indybill
  6. I too have been looking at the Maptech mapping software, but it's unclear from their site if the software yet supports the GPSMap60cs/usb yet (it only supported connection via serial as of 6/04). If anyone has newer or first hand info please advise. I'm e-mailing them to see if anything has changed. Regards, Indybill
  7. Carrying the re-titled name GPS 2R-M, for Modernized, these upcoming satellites increase the power for existing signals and offer two new military signals as well as a second civilian signal. The improvements will provide greater accuracy, added resistance to interference and enhanced performance for all users, according to the Air Force Even if the second civilian signal requires new firmware or even hardware, the increased signal strength and increased resistance to interference can only improve the performance of gps'r equipment current or future. I wish there were more details on this second civilian signal that would give some clue about whether new hardware is going to be requred to recieve it or if it's merely another piece of info on the same frequency band.
  8. Did it look like a private seller or someone who sells these on a regular basis (on eBay that is). I would take advantage of this offer if they sell them this cheap frequently! Perhapse you can tell us the sellers ID? Good Luck w/ your new toy! It was a private seller. That's why I jumped on the deal so quick. It looks like the ebay retailers are asking $399-$412 for new cs's. Megagps.com still has the best price for a new one. Regards, Indybill
  9. Yeah, I saw the $365 one too, I think shipping was about $8 on that one; best price new I've seen so far. I believe it was megagps.com that had that price. I found the mapping software cheaper elsewhere though. Cheapest I found the city select v6 was $80 at mall24-7.com But, I just found a 60CS w/ city select v6, carry case, 12v cord, 2 car mounts, and instruction videos on ebay...for $385!! It should be here next week. It had only been on there for about 2 hours and had a 'buy it now' option. I guess sometimes it does pay to be a little lucky. Regards, Indybill
  10. 60cs on Amazon today $411. Guess you gotta watch it every day for the best price. Best price for new on eBay...right around $409-$411. Coincidence??? Hmmm. I'm looking for a CS now too so keep posting those good deals. (Funny how the 'ole budget gets blown outta' the water once you see some of the really cool features of these things ) Regards, Indybill
  11. I'm new to GPSr's and don't know all the models yet, so a little forgivness for the newbee please. I'm trying to find info on Garmin's web page, but can't find a 60c. Is yours the GPSmap 60c? If so, I'm interested. Regards, Indybill
