  1. The first 4 satellites in the European Gallileo system are due to be launched this year. It is claimed that this system will be compatible with the existing GPS system. Does anybody know if existing GPS receivers will see these satellites as part of the existing constellation or will it be necessary for receivers to have a "Gallileo" mode in which only the new constellation will be visible.
  2. What is someone, who was organising an event, were to create a new caching account for the purpose of placing caches associated with their event and then claim them all as finds under their usual account. Cheesy?
  3. Don't worry about it, we've all logged the wrong cache from time to time and the meaning of the term "Distinct finds" inst't exactly obvious either.
  4. Looke like the ET power trail has hit trouble with the local authorities, you may want to look at this thread for more details.
  5. Each time you release a trackable it's best to consider it as having already been stolen and that way you can consider each log that you get to be a bonus.
  6. Whilst it may seem like a good idea to associate a travel bug with a cache, the cache needs to be findable without the TB. It doesn't matter what instructions you place on the website or attach to the TB itself, it will eventually get taken out of the area in which you need it to remain, or simply disappear altogether. Sad but true :-(
  7. Unfortunately there are people who seem to feel they are entitled to "their" find and will do whatever it takes to get it. I created a cache which consisted of a length of PVC pipe strapped to a fence post and trapped inside was a micro. It was the final cache in a set of three with the first cache container intended to be used as a watertight bung to seal the bottom of the pipe. The second cache container could be used as a container to take water from the nearby stream to pour into the top of the pipe until the micro floated to the top. I archived it after someone kicked the fencepost until it snapped at ground level, then inverted the post until the cache fell out, twisting the fence in the process and badly damaging it, selfish *******s.
  8. Remember that a crowd of kids will attract attention to the caches that they visit. Fake caches are a good way of avoiding this.
  9. The link to the reviewer is irrelevant, but the name of the hider would be great.
  10. Pocket queries are a considerable load on the servers and so need to be scheduled which is why they can't be run on demand. The initial query configuration is that no day of the week is selected so that you can test run the query to check that it will return a sensible set of caches. Once the results look good, select a day of the week and re save the query, it will then run on the day specified and will return the entire page data for each cache. Each query has a priority with the highest priority is allocated to queries which have never run before and also to users who have run the fewest queries. To take advantage of this, leave the day of the week undefined while you learn so that your experiments don't count against your daily allocation. If you have a query which you'd like to re-run, copy it and run the copy instead.
  11. if your hiding caches soley to get paragraph logs your not doing it for the right reasons. A paragraph would be great, a sentence would be nice, "TFTC" would do, it's the total absence of any log text that bothers me.
  12. Without cache hiders this game would not exist so why do allow smartphone users to insult them in this way. It wouldn' take too many empty logs before I decided "why bother" and archived everything.
  13. First you need to create a "waypoint" which is done by using the "enter/mark" key. This will display the co-ordinates of your current location. Next you edit this location to show instead the co-ordinates of the location to which you want to go. FinallyThen you need to instruct the unit to "GO TO" the waypoint that you just created. An arrow display will appear indicating the direction and distance to your waypoint. Instructions here http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/eTrexH_Quic...erenceGuide.pdf
  14. Also, when sending a message you don't have to reveal your e-mail address if you don't want to. If you don't allow it to be sent, the CO will instead be given your caching name and can reply to that via the site. It's an extra step for the CO but most won't mind to help a newbie.
  15. The waypoint name is usually used. This can cause problems if the same text appears at beginning of long cache names". For example "My wonderful cache series, #1 The tall tower" and "My wonderful cache series, #2 The scary castle" can end both end up being shortened to "My wonderf", in this case 10 characters. Some GPS usits accept only 6 characters. The sneaky thing is that if you download multiple caches which all have the same name then they will usually overwrite each other with only the last one surviving. Better yet there is usually no warning. To avoid this it's best to replace the original cache name with one that is guaranteed to be unique. Tools like GSAK can do this automatically. To see those First to find opportunities, when defining your pocket query check the "Has not been found" option. However be prepared to be trampled in the rush :-)
  16. I had a cache called "Alas poor Yorik" which was a micro embedded in a reproduction human skull. The only problem with this type of cache is that they get stolen I did include however include this warning "Alas, poor Yorik! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy". Hamlet - line 177 Originally placed as a Haloween cache, there is however nothing stopping you from looking up this old friend at any other time of year, so what are you waiting for. The nature of this one should be obvious from the title, but just in case, dont let young children or those of a nervous disposition seek Yorik alone, he won't mind, but they might. Once you've met him I think you'll agree that anyone who could fancy him in his present state needs their head examined too.
  17. "a cache at the top of a mountain miles from anywhere in the scottish wilderness", there's extra bragging points for an FTF on those caches and a dedicated band of nutters enthusiasts who go after them.
  18. The could have archived all of their logs and caches, known as a flaming geocide.
  19. "But wouldn't I perhaps get a more accurate set of coordinates by simply plotting them on Google Maps ". No, just because the maps are viewed on computer it doesn't make them accurate.
  20. Pitmedden Whodunnit (GCN539), too much work for one smiley I think but you get to join a very small group of finders.
  21. Not happy about disclosing name, gender and date of birth, have these people never heard of identity theft. Also it's necessary to enter all of these before finallly being told that your proposed userID is already in use. No thanks, I'll pass.
  22. The watcher count originally made sense but became obsolete when the bookmark facility was added to the site since people can "watch" via a bookmark list without the watcher count being incremented. Pocket queries also allow a cache to be watched unobserved. It's probably time time to remove the watcher count from cache pages.
  23. Replacing the container and log book is perfectly acceptable as long as the cache owner is informed. The inclusion of a note stating your intention to "unofficially adopt" could be more problematic and seems unnecessary.
  24. It is usually possible to log an archived cache but Groundspeak have been known to lock them if suspicious logging has taken place, e.g. armchair caching
