  1. Be patient. Give it a couple of weeks. For example, we picked up a Travel Bug on vacation & dropped in another cache right away, but it was two weeks until we got back home to log it. Assume your bug has been picked up by tourists & relax for a bit (We had a TB that was held for 364 days before being placed in another cache) -DonnaG
  2. "Quadmeister Mike" has hidden a few:Bushwacker, Moose Prints, Fisher, are a few of his 4x4 caches. Donna G
  3. Hub and I use ESRI's ArcMAP products daily at work. There are a few other geocachers at work too. I just finished 4 day's training on a mapping tool that uses ArcMAP. I have even done an analysis using ArcMAP to see how many geocaches were in the Provincial Parks. Hub has a GIS diploma & is a GIS specialist, I have a university course and have learned by doing. Geocaching just seemed to be a natural activity for us! -The Gertridge Explorers
  4. That was my first thought when I read the story in this morning's on-line Herald. I looked up caches using the postal code & thought it could be this one but I doubt it. -Donna G
  5. I was at the Kawartha Outdoor show today & asked the Ontario Parks staff if they knew when the policy on geocaching would be formalized. One of the staff had read a draft policy some time ago & thought that the final policy should be coming out soon. He also thought geocaching was a good way to bring people to the parks - that's one for us! -Donna G
  6. Gee those above posts sure beat my "Cause if I don't get one I'll hold my breath until I turn blue!!!" reply. How about "Gimmee, gimmee, gimmee, gimmee..." or for good measure I'll try "Can I have one? How 'bout now? Can I have one now? Can I have one? Now? How 'bout now? Can I have one? Can I have one? Can I have one?" *sigh* I guess I'll give up now. Congrats to the winner.... Donna G
  7. OGA - CITO - Peterborough 2004 has been posted. I think it was approved about 5 minutes after I submitted it! (Thanks cache-tech) Hope we have a decent turnout. I think I'll wait to see how many people to expect before I inform the local paper - I wouldn't want them to show up to watch the four Explorers pick up garbage. Donna G
  8. Hi Keith, The closest hotels would be the Otonabee Best Western on Lansdowne E. or the Holiday Inn on George St. I also know of a bed & breakfast just up the road from the Lift Lock. (also a Few caches within site of the Lift Lock) Donna G
  9. There is an annual Jackson Park Clean up sponsered by Peterborough Green Up (I think) & Tim Hortons. Garbage bags are provided & Tim snacks. I would like to do something at Jackson Park too. (There is one cache there too) Donna G
  10. I have had a Lock & Lock as a cache container for over a year now. It has survived all 4 seasons & it still dry inside. It is hidden in quite a sheltered spot, but it has survived the cold of winter & the heat & humidity of summer quite nicely. They get my vote. (check Walmart & Home Depot for these containers. I know the Canadian stores carry Lock & Lock) -Donna G
  11. Hi, welcome to caching. If you are in Ontario search for username "Quadmeisters Ric & Mike" they like ATV/4x4 caches. Like Lingham, Whitefish, Moose Prints, Fisher & Bushwacker. There are probably other cachers that hide caches of this type, but these are the guys that I know of in this neck of the woods! Have fun, Donna G
  12. In Canada, a good, cheap cache container is the "Lock& Lock" container. It is a platic locking container with a seal on the lid. Supposed to be microwave, dishasher & freezer safe, so that covers most weather conditions. I have had one as a container for over a year now & it is still in excellent condition. You can buy them at Zellers, Walmart, Home Hardware, etc. That said, go and find a few to see which containers dont work too well & which ones are still dry inside. Happy caching, Donna G
  13. This company sells digital aerial photography & digital ontario Base Map data. The City of Hamilton has some good aerial imagery on their website too. There is IKONOS imagery for Ontario, but it is very expensive. Donna G PS - If you live near the US border there may be data available because of the need for sidelap.
  14. Maybe Association of Ontario Geocachers would work - AGO ?Just a thought. Also, check out th BC Geocachers thread & webpage for content ideas. They have done a nice job there. Donna G
  15. My favourite cache to date is Nuttby in Nova Scotia. It is the highest point on the mainland. You can see PEI on a clear day. The view is fantastic. Donna G
  16. My Garmin Venture came with a cable for hookup to the computer. It is approx. $200 and hasn't failed me yet. Happy caching, Donna G
  17. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to all. Boxing Day is our 2 year anniversary of caching. Happy caching in the New Year! -Donna G
  18. I would just like to add my reply in here. I know I really don't have the time or will to organize or run an Ontario Geocacher's Association/Group/Society. I appreciate all of the efforts being made to get this thing started. I will join, support & help in any way I can, whatever group is formed. Donna G
  19. Lac Seul Islands Conservation Reserve has not yet been regulated, but probably will be soon. You can get more information from here. You may want to check before you hide, cause a cache in a park won't get approved right now. Donna G
  20. I got permission from the Otonabee Conservation Authority to place my cache Testing, testing, 1..2..3.. it has been in place for over a year with positive response. I also forwarded my correspondance to another conservation authority (I can't remember specifically - maybe Aurora), and they were also very excited about the activity. John Williams is my contact at Otonabee Cons. Authority -Donna G
  21. Hey, if you are going to visit Spy-Glass, take a recipie to add to ourGalloping Geo-rmet TB. It would also be nice nice if some one would move it along. Anyone going Stateside soon? It's nice to think that I might be remotely participating in this event! Have fun everyone! -Donna G
  22. This is the post I was trying to reply to when the Great Crash of '03 happened. I was in Guiding for 10 years - through Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders & Rangers. I thought I would one day be a leader, but being blessed with boys, I am now in training to be a leader in Scouting (Beavers to be exact). The skills I learned in Guides lead me to my career of surveying & have proved useful in geocaching. -Donna G
  23. Great job everyone. Thank for keeping us all informed and updated on your progress. Well done! - Donna G
  24. I'll bet it was Oshawa Trails. Sliver & Lucy are a husband and wife team, have a Rogers homepage, and I think his name is Harry. Hope this is the one you were looking for. -Donna G
  25. BB, If you really want a copy of Geodesy The Concepts, contact the University of New Brunswick Bookstore This was the required Geodesy text when I took surveying (Geodesy was taught by Petr Vanicek, one of the authors). My copy is paperback & they may even have a used copy for sale. (just to warn you - we called it 'Geodesy the Contraceptive', because it would put you to sleep so fast.) -Donna G
