  1. I'm very much afraid I've become addicted to a website - and my withdrawal symptoms are kicking in. civilised
  2. OK! – I’ve served my apprenticeship – learned lessons from all you masters – walked miles when my poor body just isn’t used to it – had some of the best times I can remember with my son – seen some absolutely fantastic views and really got into this sport/game/hobby. So now I want to pay back. I’ve got the site – the ammo boxes – the stuff to put in the ammo boxes – the desire to go and put the box at the site – but I’m stuck. It would be on a footpath, but how do I find out who owns the land on which the footpath runs? Do I just stand on the path and ask passers-by who the owner is? Is it more complicated than that? Do I have to go the Land Registry? The council?. Once I’ve discovered the owner – how should I contact him/her? Pop round for a chat? Write a letter? Mark out my message in large stones on their field? How do the masters go about it? TIA civilised
  3. All you need to do to add a link is click the "http://" button above the text window and copy and paste the URL into it. Thenk click OK, add a name for the link (such as "Link") and press OK again. I knew someone would help Thanks civilised
  4. The Wobbly Club have come up with UK Travel Bug Retirement Home ( God I wish I could insert links like everyone else ) which seems slightly less macabre than a graveyard civilised D*m* not quick enough
  5. I'm sorry Can you point out one of these caches ? I can't find anything about Family Wood and I'm fairly sure they didn't take over all 28 caches - So please tell us one of them - thanks. civilised
  6. I think that more then one cacher has taken over these caches - have a look. civilised
  7. Hello I'm very new here ,but I've come across these caches too - I think you'll find that they have all been adopted by other people - the original owner went back to the USA I believe. So you can go out when you're next in London and find them civilised
  8. Yes indeed - I was hoping someone might volunteer. I shall email you my answers - hope I'm right Thanks for your help - off to find your profile now civilised
  9. Thanks for the replies I've logged about 6 or 7 virtuals in the past few days and I'm still waiting to hear back from 5 owners, including the one which prompted me to start this thread. As I said in the first post, I'm not concerned about the other 4, as I'm ( reasonably ) confident I got them right And obviously I'd prefer not to start reporting all these generous people who are setting caches for me to find The one in question is rather ambiguous - which has made me uncertain But with all your welcome advice I'll now log it. Thanks again for all your help civilised
  10. Hi What's the form on claiming virtual caches ? I did one a few days ago which I haven't yet logged, as I'm not 100% sure that I got the right answer. I emailed the owner with my answers but have heard nothing back. I realise that most owners don't always respond to claims on virtuals but so far I've been sure about all my answers, so their lack of response hasn't stopped me claiming. In this case I really don't want to claim it and then have my entry deleted at some future date. Grateful for any advice. civilised
  11. Out of interest, how do the posters know when these milestones are reached ? As far as I can tell, it's usually another poster who intitiates the congratulations for the cachers concerned - do people keep an eye on profiles to monitor when significant events are coming up ?
  12. God that was quick ! Is that where it derives from ? What about those of us who may not have a PPC ? I think it's confusing civilised
  13. I had a quiet night at work - so I had a read of this forum right back to the beginning - I'm only up to page 75 so far ( in reverse order ) - wow, it's better than EastEnders What a lot of history in such a short space of time And no, I'm not going to bring up any of the taboo subjects civilised
  14. Hi I understand queries - but why ' Pocket ' ? civilised
  15. Hi Thanks for all the work that you did on this script - and all the helpful replies to subsequent queries. I've got it to work - except that some caches are still showing as simple blue dots ( as before ) and yet most are showing as one would expect. Any ideas why this might be ? TIA civilised
  16. I’ve exported a list of caches from GSAK to Memory Map. MM currently displays the caches as a small blue dot – I’d like to have them shown as something bigger, preferably the generic geocache icon that comes with MM. How do I tell either piece of software to automatically assign my preferred icon? And also, can the software give the cache name rather than the geocom user waypoint ID ? I’m new to GSAK and I find some of its commands rather more involved than I’m used to, being a GUI person at heart , so if someone could walk me through this I’d be very grateful. TIA civilised
  17. Thanks for your reply - I just had a look there and they seem to be more hiking orientated. What I'm after is the ability to tell whatever piece of software it is that my route, for example, is 80 miles along the M4 and then for the software to work out all caches within say, 5 miles, of that route. Thanks again for your prompt reply. civilised
  18. Hi I found, via the resources page, this web site Routes, which describes how to calculate nearby caches to a particular route using GSAK and Streets and Trips (which I think is the USA equivalent of Autoroute) I’d like to be able to do this but I don’t have a recent version of Autoroute – does anyone know if it can it be done in Memory Map? On a different note – I’d like to register GSAK but I’m not a fan of PayPal – is there another way of paying? TIA civilised
  19. Hi Would you mind letting me have this file too ? I'd be very grateful civilised
  20. I investigated the various mentions to my last query and I wondered what the opinion was of Tracklogs ? good bad or indifferent ? Is anyone using it ? Thanks again civilised
  21. Thanks for all the helpful and informative replies. One of the reasons for getting into this was a lifelong interest in maps ( and being fortunate enough to live in the same country as the Ordnance Survey ) so I'm overwhelmed to see so many bits of software that would allow me to use OS maps on a PC. I think I'm fairly clear on the uses of such software with reference to geocaching and once again, thanks to all who replied civilised
  22. Hi I’m very new to caching and GPS in general. I got a Garmin Etrex Vista C a couple of weeks ago – I’m having great fun finding caches. But I’m interested in finding out the capabilities of my unit. I’ve seen references on here to Memory Map and Fugawi. Can some kind person tell me the uses of this kind of mapping software? If I bought the software and the OS maps, can I upload the maps or part of them to my GPS unit? If not, what would they be used for? I would say in advance that I’m virtually guaranteed to have further questions based on the replies I hope to receive to this – please be patient And finally – I’m sorry if this should have been posted elsewhere in these forums, but I wanted a UK perspective TIA civilised
  23. Hi This sounds excellent - but could you be really kind and walk me through the process ? I've tried it once with no success - think I need the Dummy's guide Thanks in advance civilised
