OK, no more takers so I will give the DING, to civilised
The Oder of COMPANIONS of HONOUR (CH) is awarded as wiKi states above ^ . It is often thought of as a junior Ordser of Merot.
Civilised, over to you......
Never heard of that one !
Thanks for the ding
Cromwell Street = Fred & Rose West
Rillington Place = Reg Christie
Hilldrop Crescent = ?
-
A guess - The Order of the Garter?
Nope limit is Sovereign, Prince of Wales and 24 others = 26 (2 vacancies at this time!). Sorry - No Ding
Order of Merit ? - (that's the one I aspire to)
-
I respectfully suggest that civilised just tells us the answer and moves matters on by setting us a new question.
Good idea - the answer is Wentworth Woodhouse, previously owned by the Earls Fitzwilliam, one of whom was the man who died with Kathleen Cavendish, Marchioness of Hartington, John Kennedy's sister
As Hellfire1917 made the suggestion, I'll pass the question setting to him/her, in the hope that something less obscure will come up
-
I "knew" this place - but not by its correct name (which I googled). If it is OK by civilised I will add a little hint that could help cachers of a certain age that were teacher trained perhaps - Lady Mabel College!!
Yes of course - I'm a little embarrassed that this has gone on so long - and I must say that I don't think dodgydaved's hint is particularly helpful
I did say some time ago that i'd be happy if someone searched for it
-
Shall I give the answer ?
Don't like to hold the game up
You could open it up to Googling, or give a hint.
BTW I already googled and would never have guessed it.
Please feel free to get an answer in any way you can - the players here are able to answer really obscure questions (to me), and I tend to forget that others may not have the same interests as me

I think the house is Chatsworth
A Devonshire and Hartington Ding to civilised!
Would you like to explain the connection dodgydaved? Or do you think that Devonshire & Hartington will convince players that we're not cheating :D
JFK's sister married the Marquis of Hartington (son of the Duke of Devonshire) and they lived at Chatsworth. She is buried in Edensor churchyard, Edensor being the estate village. Sorted!!
Thanks for that
After the death of her husband, John Kennedy's sister Kathleen died in a plane crash with her lover
The lover was the owner of a house with allegedly the longest facade in Europe at 606 feet
What's the name of the house?
OK - some clues - the house was vandalised by Mannie Shinwell, in his capacity as Minister of Fuel and Power. Due to his hatred of inherited wealth, he turned the immediate surroundings of the house into the 'largest open cast mining site in Britain'
The house was later bought by a private individual, who has tried to sue the successors to the National Coal Board for subsidence caused at that time
It's in South Yorkshire

I think this might be a trick question, as I believe the D didn’t stand for anything.
I think that's Harry S Truman where he just added the S to fit in with other Americans - not even enough imagination to come up with a name
Still don't know what Ike's middle name is though
-
I think it's best if it goes back to koselig so perhaps h/she could ask another question ?
-
That's the ding- well done.
Thanks... I did have a little peek - does that make me a bad person??
An easy one then. Who is this??
Clue : 1972
Had a little peek at what UncleMalcy ?
I just couldn't dredge up the name (I don't find Swedish names easy - it took me a month to read "The girl with the dragon tattoo") so I had a little peek at Wikipedia.
So your advice would be, whenever we don't know the answer, to search for it ?
I don't have time to look for the relevant quote from Simply Paul - something along the lines of no googling - but doesn't it seem contrary to basic fairness ?
Would you do this in a pub quiz ?
Is there any point in attempting to compete with you ?

Please accept the ding

What was the name of the man known as 'The Brides in the Bath' murderer, executed for the crimes in August 1915 ?
-
Thank you.

Haiti ?

I'll await Civilised's answer, but i think the law changed in 1928 or 1929 to raise the age to 16, but I have it in mind that before the law changed it was 12 for girls (I cannot put women) and 14 for boys (men - really?).
Yes you're quite right UncleMalcy
Ding to you
http://www.gwoodward.co.uk/guides/marriages.htm link supplied in case of doubters
-
I knew it was too easy!
** DING ** to Civilised.
It wasn't that easy - remembering the date was tricky
Thanks for the ding
At what age could women marry in England in 1928 ?
-
Hurrah! Thanks for the ding
OK a nice easy one, in two parts. (This is a classic pub quiz question).
Who was the only British Prime Minister ever to be assassinated, and in which year??
Spencer Percival - 1812 ?
-
thanks for the ding
staying with names
Where would you find the world famous rooster, named Cornelius?
I'll give it a try - at the beginning of a Pathe News film?
-
Robert Graves ?
dadgum
-
(Grergory Peck, American? )
Wasn't he ?
Apologies if I've misled - i honestly thought ( and still do ) that he was
-
In that case Atticus Finch was the one and only Grergory Peck, will have to track down the film of On The Beach now!
