  1. I know I have seen the officilal logos for down load but im blowed if I can find them. Any ideas anyone?
  2. Ahh, a wave of nostalgia sweeps over me for one of the great urban legends, but one which never fails to shock and entertain, despite being entirely false, as far as anyone can tell. Now here's someone with the right idea I am mature student and supliment my meagre income by working in a pub. The landlord was telling me of a pub where he used to work in Cheltenham. The bottled beer was kept in the cellar and when the urinals in the gents overflowed ( a regular occurance) it washed all the bottles as they were directly below. No danger of wiels disease as the wee washed all traces of the rats away Ted
  3. Thanks for the feedback folks one more question, if you stray from the route does it atomatically recalculate a new one or does it throw a wobbly? Thanks again Ted
  4. mmmmmmm 79 and 11 miles, prety simple realy behindthepub
  5. I have used in car gps navigation systems and been very impressed, enter a postcode and off you go, Flossie shouting instuctions through the radio to keep you honest. My question is if I bought a Garmin GPSMAP 60c or cs and the city select software would I be very diaspointed in the automotive navigation side of it. What can you expect of it, door to door navigation, would it find a street in a village in North Wales or just the county? does it do postcodes? Just how good is it? I will start the clock now and see how fast a response I get. 1,2,3......... Ted
  6. I have just been looking at this on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...5757484005&rd=1 It looks cocher but is there a catch? How about import duty? Comments welcome. Ted
  7. Right I think im getting there. You run the OS mapping SW on your PC and then use it to set waypoints. When you have made a route you transfer this to the GPSR. This then displays the track between the waypoints as on my old GPSII. There is no on screen mapping shown, just the track, distance etc. The only onscreen stuff is owhen using it for road navigation. Is this right please. T
  8. Ok let me get this right. If i bought a Garmin 60CS I would need the OS map software for getting out and about in the hills and the City Select for road navigation? About £750 in total. How much of each could I store wothout having to plug into a PC to change the area I was using. I dont suppose the little chap could hold that much. Ted
  9. Ah third-degree-witch , glad to hear there is another owner of a fine Yamaha here. Do you visit the Diversion site? T
  10. I found out about caching because of a post on a motor bike owners group on MSN http://groups.msn.com/YamahaDiversions/general.msnw. We all own, or have owned a particular make of bike and help each other out and do a bit for charity when we can. I and a few others are planning to do the Round Britain Rally, http://www.roundbritainrally.co.uk/ or at least part of it , but we cant start until we get the clues just before Easter. One guy mentioned Geocaching and I was off. The RBR seems to be a bit like a whole lot of offset caches where you have to solve a clue and then take a picture of your bike with the control card by location the answer gives you. The idea is to do as many as posible before the closing date in October. About 12 got round all of them last year but they do go to every county on the mainland UK so its quite a proposition to get round. As I was led here from there, I thought I might return the complement and send a few of you there, from here [i know what i mean even if you dont] hope thats OK. Ted
  11. Hi Robert, thanks for the response. I downloaded GSAK 5.0.4 build 20 last week GPS babel v. 1.2.4 Does that help? Ted
  12. Hi Clyde, I have been getting to grips with GSAK this week and am very impressed. A fine peice of development work, but and there is always a but, i cant seem to get it to communicate with my GPSr. I am using an old Garmin GPSII, which may be a problem and am on the COM 1 port. I can do exports from Easy GPS OK. Any ideas please. Ted
  13. Thanks chaps, I think i have it now, you wouldnt think I am in the final year of a computing degree would you and I am a mature student 44 years young I will work on the pocket query thing tomorrow night. Ted
  14. Thanks for the reply Brian, I am simply ticking the boxes on the Geocache web page, after sorting on my postcode and then using the download option at the bottom of the page. the dialogue page then gives the option to open in Gsak or save to disc. whichever I choose when I look in Gsak the afore mentioned info is missing. I guess I am missing the point somewhere along the line. Ted
  15. I have downloaded a copy of GSAK and it looks great but some ofthe info does'nt show up. All caches are of unknown type, the little grid that is supposed to tell you about the last four visits is grey for all locations. There is no symbol for the travel bugs, etc etc. It is as if the re are great chunks of the data not being copied across. Advice please. Ted
  16. Earlyer this week I was strugling to find my first cachebecause I had the GPSr set up wrongly. You folks put me right. Now I have five finds to my name. Thanks again,
  17. Thanks for all of the nice, encouraging messages. I hope to get a couple of caches ticked off over the next few days and am looking foreward to the nice weather to get out on the motorbike and bag lots more Cheers Ted
  18. Thanks folks, got my first cahe today [Waterworld (Glocs)]. All down to your good selves sorting out my GPS settings for me. I ended up about 50meters from where I was looking yesterdayand found it easily. Thanks again Ted
  19. Hi folks, me again, having established that I needed to re set the datum on my GPS I am looking foreward to trying again. I now have another question. There are many and varied items in the caches and they seem to get around a bit. Are they all "official" travel bugs with other items attached or are some just odds and ends that people have used instead. If the latter is true can these be traced like the bugs, ie on line through the siteand automatically, or do you just have to search for where they have ended up manually. Thanks Ted
  20. Thanks for the rapid responses folks. I have changed the set up to WSG84. The 0.04 did indeed refer to miles not meters sorry for the confusion. T
  21. Hello all, I have just discovered this site and the "art" of geocahing but have hit a few hurdles. 1. The nearest cache to my home is, i recon, about 120 meters its the one in Malmesbury The Flying Monk II (Malmesbury, Wiltshire) but my GPS keeps losing coverage so as yet I have not found it. It may also heve something to do with me feeling self concious walking around a small town where I have lived for 17 years looking lost and carrying a GPS reciever. 2. I decided to try another cache, where I was a bit more anonimous but couldnt find it. My reciever got me to 0.04 m but I just couldnt see anything. This one is Waterworld (Glocs) and all the feedback states that they found the cache easily. Is it me? My GPS is a fairly ols Garmin GPSII so only 8 satalites resieved but i would have thought it would do to begin with. I have it set up for position, hddd,mm.mmm and datum, ord survey, is the cause of my problems? 3. Caches are listed on the site in grid refferences, is it posible to convert easily to ordanance survey so i can relate it to my extensive collection of OS maps? I think that should do to start with. Many thanks Ted PS the handle behindthepub is because thats where the nearest cache to me is.
