  1. Why is it that when caching in an area that you are not overly familiar with and get to a fork, and you trust your good old GPSr to show you the right way it will tell you to take the right fork when it turns out you actually needed the left. And vice versa. Had a good weekend caching around Lynton, Lynmouth and the North Devon Exmoor coast and the above happened almost every time! Darren
  2. Blimey - 12 FTFs in one hit. How long had they been there for? My impression is that the new caches tend to get hit almost immediately - to get round 12 before anyone else is quite an achievement...
  3. Some good points above. In our case this particular cache was en route to work so we left earlier than normal, stopped on the way before continuing. If we'd gone out last night in the excitement of "Oooo, Oooo, a potential FTF" then this would certainly have been the case. However, as we're not big FTFers (obviously!) we kind of assumed someone would have been out last night beating us to it. It was only by having a look first thing this morning and seeing no found logs that we stopped en route.
  4. Does it get addictive doing FTFs? I didn't see the appeal, really, until this morning... http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...d4-b61c15126232
  5. Unfortunately this was the line people used when this subject came up quite a few years ago. Today Harpal Singh is nearly 24, and can barely get a game for Stockport County who have just been relegated from League 1 to League 2 (the 4th Division in old money).
  6. Are you referring to the basemap provided when you buy the unit or a map product you have subsequently bought and applied? (And thanks to everyone for the advice so far)
  7. Asked this in 'Getting Started' and it was suggested I ask here also...
  8. Had my first day Geocaching on Sunday and despite limited success I really enjoyed the day. I was lucky enough to be able to use a borrowed GPSr to see what I thought. I'm now looking at getting my own unit and thoughts turn to what one to get. Looking at http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk I see recreational devices divided into 2 - basic and mapping. I'm not looking to spend a fortune - the Magellan eXplorist 200 and Garmin eTrex Legend (EU Basemap) from the mapping section look to be about the mark. I'm wondering just how 'rich' the mapping functionality is on these things. Will I see villages/towns marked on them if out in the country? What about roads? And is this stuff available built in, or will I have to buy some mapping software for the PC and install as required? Any help appreciated. Thanks!
  9. Somewhat ambitiously, after this morning's adventure, we went out this afternoon on a 7 part cache. GPS had us hiking all over the place (urban Bristol, England) with not a lot of success. Map Datum was not set to WGS84, but is now. Need to get out again to assess the difference it makes. I'm quite hopeful!
  10. Been out Geocaching for the first time this morning. Using the clues that were provided and the local geography, pretty sure I was in the right place on both occasions. However on one cache my GPS said about 20-25 metres away from the given co-ords, on the second it was more like 60m. My GPS was saying accurate to about 9-11 metres at each of these which makes me think the first could be possible, given a possible small inaccuracy of the GPS of the person who left the cache, but the 2nd seems too far out. Off out now on my third cache, but wondered what I should expect...
