  1. This is not too bad an idea. Something that would let you know that the owner has been to GC in the last 90 days or so. When I have trouble with a cache (as in "can't find") I look at the owners profile to see if they have checked in lately. What good does that do? I don't know. I guess it just lets me think that I should look harder before giving up. (usually works) While I might not go and look at my cache listings all that often, I do read every log sent to me. As well, I do come out to the site to see what is in the area I am in. (home or travel)
  2. How did I know that was going to come up? The surprising thing is who said it first.
  3. Even though they are really cheap, most bicycle speedos (odometers) can be fairly accurate. The thing is, comparing one to your GPS is like apples and oranges. I would think that in most cases that the bike would show more mileage than the GPS. Normally riding a bike will include quite a bit of wobble and meander which would increase mileage. However the gps normally tracks it's mileage (as well as it's tracklog) by tracking waypoints at either set or variable intervals. Doing this will miss most of the wobble or even average out the track. I first found this when I tried to map some of the trails I rode on my MTB. Really curvy sections of trail would appear to be nearly straight sections. To fix this I would set the acquisition interval to a really low time (~1 sec). After this the distance got closer.
  4. Wow. Two days of posting, nit picking and selective qouting for replies. What exactly are you looking for? Right now it just appears to be a rock throwing contest. It appears that this thread needs to be locked.
  5. I guess around where I live, there must be quite a few "ghost cachers". The caches around here (mine included) have a lot more logs in the logbook than the on-line log. While the owner won't know it if they rely only on the on-line log, they could be pleasantly surprised when they do cache maintenance.
  6. Ok, I really didn't mean Cleaver hide. I meant clever hide. Hmmm Cleaver hide might be good for Halloween. Not too good for trading though. Thanks for the e-mails though.
  7. What makes a good cache? Good location. Cleaver hide. Unique container. These are important. Not necessarily all at the same time but... Good overall condition of the cache. Yes, important. A wet rotting smelly cache is bad. One full of wet soap is worse. Good trading items. Really don't care. I'm not out for the trade. The only time I may be in a trading mood is when i have kids with me. However in that case i will usually pre-scout a cache to make sure it is ok and has kid-stuff in it (actually I will make sure it does by stocking as necessary). That way the young ones are not disappointed. Trading items - Pt II. I will say though: There are some cachers that leave some really cool signature items out there. Over the years I have seen some really unique items that make me wish I had just some of the creativity they possess. No, I don't pick them up. But I admire them none the less.
  8. I guess you wouldn't mind if your caches simply vanished then right? Funny thing is that they do disappear every now and then. There is really nothing that prevent that short of guarding it 24/365. That is something a cache owner has to accept. What if a reviewer archived it based on that SBA? Don't care? What if the log was completely bogus and now you have an archived listing and the cache is actually still there? Don't care? They also get archived. That's why TPTB attempt to contact you to let you fix the situation. A cache can be unarchived. Maybe I really don't understand because I just accept that Geocaching is just something to do. It's not my job, life or anything like that. It is just something that allows me to get out, it provides me with a challenge, it's just fun......
  9. Troll? Let's hope so. But no matter even after 12 hours I've got to reply. (you can giggle while I remove the hook. Snap! I feel better) Sock puppet acount jumps on the forum and declares in their first post that we "need" to define a rule that will clear up once and for all wheather or not someone has "found a cache". Cool! Who is to enforce this? Who is going to make sure they follow it? That's what I thought. If you really think about it, it is all up to the cache owner and the cacher. The cache owner posts his cache on this site and when doing so they can request how it is to be logged, what type of trade items they would "like" to be in the cache, all kinds of things. But! that is all between the cache owner and the cacher. Not some busibody that thinks all could be better if things are done a certain way and to be able to participate in this "hobby" it must be done their way. Well, that's enough for now. I'm bored already.
  10. Maybe there should be a pinned thread titled: "I don't like your cache, tb, McToys, golf ball, soap, WG?, logbook, name, GPSr <yada, yada, yada> and I want a rule to make it better for me!" What about the first cache? Didn't it contain a can of beans? Oh my! That just wouldn't do today! First it's food, then someone wouldn't like the type of beans. Then someone might. Then someone wouldn't like that particular brand. But then there wasn't a can opener included. And why wasn't it Chilli? Ok, That is a bit over the top I guess. The fact of the matter is that it is really a about the hunt. Not the trinkets, not the person, not the GPSr. In certian ways Jeremy and TOPTB have tried to help you avoid these caches that you don't like by having logs on the site that can be read. There are difficulty ratings. There is even a cache size. Sometimes, sometime, at least every now and then you need to sit back, take a breath and remember... it's just a game. A game that started off with "no rules", Only "recommendations". If we keep it up, we might just "rule" the fun out of it. For whose benefit? I could go on, but let's hope I don't
  11. This may have been discussed before, but I couldn't find it (yet) Has anyone successfully managed to run Mapsource under Linux using Wine or Crossover Office? If so... How? or maybe a link to a site that explains it? So far I can get it to "run" under wine and get it updated to version 5.4 (6.x updated will not load) I know there are some issues with serial communications, but those are ok. The biggest problem that I see so far is that when you load a saved file, The "name" and "symbol" are transposed.. ie. switched in their respective columns. Garmin states that they have no plans to release a 'nix version so that is out. But it would be nice to be able to use it under linux. Thanks!
  12. Thanks folks! After reading that it will work off the HD, I decided to go searching through the registry. Sure enough there were the pointers to the cdrom drive. After a few search and replace moves and some copying it works! I thought it was going to be like some of those anoying Delorme products that insist on being in the cdrom drive. Thanks again! --- Mikel & ErinsWeb

  14. I had problem like you describe. I have R&R, Waterways, and something else (don't remember). I found that everytime I install an another add-on, I have to reload the latest and greatest Mapsource patch or I will get errors and no program load. Now if I could get it to run without having to load a CD... ---Mikel & ErinsWeb

  16. triangulation??? Isn't that what most of us do when we try to zero in on a cache or is that really a drunken bee dance? Mikel & ErinsWeb
  17. Just about everytime. My daughter likes to hear what other people have written. Then I get to transfer her thoughts to the log (she gets to sign it). We have actually found notes in some that ask us to let another cacher know when we visited. They like to hear about the childrens view of our world. If the area is crowded or buggy or gettting dark, we will skim it. --- Mikel & ErinsWeb
  18. I have tried both Avantgo and iSilo. For the Pathetique page i think the iSilo works fine. I haven't tried Plucker yet, but I will. The advantage to iSilo is you don't have to tolerate the advertising. I'll get back when I try plucker. Just my opinion. --- Mikel & ErinsWeb
  19. Being that everything is bigger in Texas, it would make perfect sense to create a "Texas Region" (region of Texas). Though judging from the egos of my relatives and in-laws, The Texas Region would have to go from Nevada to Minnesota to Alabama. (They think texas is so big that they put those other state names on the map just hide the true size)
  20. When I first got started, I picked up two TB's. In the excitement of moving them decent distances, I too lost the log in which I wrote the numbers. One was easy to go back and get, the other I had to write the owner about. The owners will help you.(as you found out) The one I wrote to even admitted that he/she had done the same thing (and told me not to feel bad about it). ---Mikel & ErinsWeb
  21. Actually Renegade Knight is right. Each organization will try to copycat the other until we have no space left. Some will actually "request funds" to "cover the expenses required to keep the Geocachers out". It is in our best interest to continue to spread the word that our hobby is one that believes in the theory and practice of "leave no trace". That we believe that we should leave our destination in better condition than when we got there - "Cache in - Trash Out". While up to now, much of our hobby has been in stealth mode, we need to start up our PR machine and let everyone know who we are and how we operate and that there are many many more of us than the few "bad apples" that they may hear about. That way when there is a blurb such as the one started this thread, people will expect the author to provide proof rather than us. Our proof will be there already. The thing is once we start, we can never stop. (of course that is a good thing)
  22. A Dreamcatcher. We still have that one. Nearly everything else gets placed into another cache. --- Mikel & ErinsWeb
  23. Lets see. For the daughter: Fruities Trail Mix Rice cakes Band Aids For me: Water Spare batteries Mikel & ErinsWeb
  24. We really haven't had anybody ask us, but we have had a couple of lost GeoCachers try and tell us about it. (that was after my daughter slipped up and said `They look like they are doing a drunken bee dance!` a little too loud.)
  25. It's been 18 hours since Markwell first posted on `this` thread and he already has 18 posts. At this rate he could cross 1000 in ~6 weeks.
