  1. JoeN, Thanks in advance for answering some questions. I'm planning to buy a 120 and a 110, and having read the on-line user's manual I have two q's: Does the 120 do waypoint averaging when you mark a new waypoint? The book says you can view the other Rino's path on your Rino. Does it capture the whole track log, or just the one point you're at when you transmit?

final for you maybe, but I'm just getting started
  4. Here's my vote: the view from Sumas Mountain. It was even more spectacular when a bald eagle soared past, but of course my camera wasn't ready . . .
  5. I find the hunt intriguing and I really enjoy discovering places I've never been before, but for me the wonder of it all is that this sport is the ultimate honour system. Caches in the great outdoors, waiting to be discovered and (almost) never getting pillaged. Cachers all playing by the rules. With the amount of crime these days, Geocaching is tonic for the soul.
  6. Streets and Trips is great software for the price, even in Canada. And if you do a forum search you can find the patch that increases the update rate from 15 seconds to 2 seconds. It really makes Streets usable for driving.
  7. I just bought a Smart Skymaster to use with my laptop. About the size of a hockey puck, its just a receiver, no display, memory or other stuff you don't need. Works with MS Streets & Trips and other software that accepts an NMEA signal. And its relatively cheap at $185. Canadian. I think that's like about 50 bucks US. Here's the link. http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/skymaster.htm
  8. I have a Garmin 12, and it works well in the Vancouver area. It will lose lock under heavy tree cover, though. The only reference I have for comparison is by reading others' logs: when they say things like "coverage is spotty", that's pretty much what I experience as well. I like my G-12's ability to run on 5 volts - I can power it from a laptop's PS2 port.
  9. A couple things to check: Is your map datum the same as the map datum in your GPS? For your calibration points, did you enter positive degree numbers and correctly select the N latitude and W longitude (assuming you're in BC)? If you run your mouse over the map image (not in calibration mode) and check the cursor position numbers just below the toolbar. Do they make sense? Are your waypoint lat and long values in the same range? Good luck!
  10. Yes, no problem, as long as you have access to a computer. Internet Cafe's and libraries are good places to get some computer time. Then you just need to remember your Geocaching username and password, log on to the site and log your finds. Happy Vacation!
  11. I use both OziExplorer and ExpertGPS. ExpertGPS map downloads are not available in Canada, so it gets used mainly for waypoint management, something it does far better than Ozi. OziExplorer is great for using topo maps purchased on CD, or downloaded Toporama maps stored on my hard drive, something that ExpertGPS does not do. If I had to choose only one of them it would be Ozi, for the ability to use the "moving map" feature with my own digital topo maps.
  12. Yes, your serial-to-serial adaptor may be the problem. I've successfully connected my Garmin 12 and Ipaq two ways: 1. using standard serial connector cables with a null modem adaptor and a gender bender, and 2. using a homemade cable that connects the ground, send and receive wires. If your adaptor needs to swap the send and receive wires.
  13. Sounds like you need Oziexplorer. I use it, and highly recommend it. You can download it from www.oziexplorer.com. I believe the cost is still US$75. As well, there's a good user group at Yahoo called OziUsers-L. Its worth having a look!
  14. You bet. Go to the "Route" menu item and open "More Options". You can set your start, length of day, and much more! Cheers!
  15. Are you a member? If so, the Pocket Query Generator may be the answer. MobiPocket Reader has a version for the desktop or laptop as well as the Pocket PC, and it works pretty well. I just received a file containing the nearest 500 caches and can view the pages (slightly different format from the website) on my PC. As well, the file for download to EasyGPS is available. I must say, I'm impressed with it so far!
  16. I say the cup's half full. It was a link on the Garmin site that introduced us to Geocaching. Thanks Garmin!
  17. On a recent United flight I asked the pilot for permission to use my GPS. He wouldn't allow it. He said that the GPS will "interrogate" the satellites, and those signals could affect the signals used by the aircraft navigation system. He did admit the chances of interference were very small, but the stakes are obviously high. Erring on the side of caution, I expect. It would sure be nice to get one consistent answer, as long as that answer is the one we want to hear.

  19. No problem. I've installed ExpertGPS and when I download and select OPEN at the prompts (both times) ExpertGPS automatically opens with the waypoint. By the way, I still have EasyGPS installed.
  20. I'm assuming the poll was a joke, eh? Eh? Yes, a tad tongue in cheek, but not entirely. And, as RiverCacher points out, the "low" designation does make the messages stand out. By the way, Clayjar, I like your admission: there are many times I see IMHO I wonder if the H really applies (but never on this discussion board).
  21. I'm fairly new to Geocaching, but have developed a bit of a passion for it. Reading the posts, I sense I'm not alone in this regard. So I find it ironic that the automated announcements (new caches, watch lists, etc.) are sent with low importance. They are highly important to me! How do you feel?
  22. My Cardinal watch is useless for geocaching!
  23. I suggest you activate it, if possible. If the original owner didn't activate it before placing it, I'd think chances are slim they will activate it after.
