  1. Just to update for anyone who is curious, we were able to do one physical cache in Havana with the help of some locals who guided us to it and also two virtuals. Cuba was an amazing place to visit, very easy to do and I can't wait to go back!
  2. Thanks all for your advice! I am pre-printing caches and will load offline maps into my phone, but no.. I wouldn't bring a GPS. Thank you so much Gabeman26! I know I could have used google translate but thought it would be better to have someone who understands the context of what Geocaching is to help.
  3. Hello! This is a bit of a random request, but I will be traveling to Cuba on a cruise this weekend and I am really looking forward to doing a few caches. I was thinking it might be helpful to have a printed out definition of what caching is in Spanish to show our guide and also to be able to show the police or anyone else who might question what we are doing. I know Cuba is very sensitive about anything involving GPS, so the definition would need to not mention that and most of the blurbs online about caching in Spanish mention GPS. I'm going to be going old school and printing out a few possible caches and try and find them simply by the printed map, hints and some luck. Is there anyone who could help me with this? Sorry in advance if this is not the right forum for this and thank you in advance for any help!
  4. Hello! I've been caching for 10 years but I have very limited experience with travel bugs and I want to make sure I am doing this correctly. - I have a travel bug that I was given during a meet in California. I've brought it back to Florida and taken "ownership" of it by retrieving it. - I've taken some photos of it at Walt Disney World (for the little girl whose bug it is) and I want to add those photos to the page. - There is a virtual at the Magic Kingdom that I have already found - do I re-log the visit to this virtual and then on the log page have the travel bug "visit"? Do I upload photos from the cache page or do I do it somehow that I seem to be missing on the travel bug page? -I tried writing a note on the virtual page, and putting that the TB visited it at that time, but it never showed up on the TB page nor did it prompt me to add photos. Here is the TB if anyone is interested - http://coord.info/TB61022 Hope that makes sense! Thanks in advance for any help!!!
  5. If I need to load photos, do research or if the maps don't DL properly (which sometimes they don't). It's a one time $30 charge on AT&T for an international data "pack" which isn't a bad investment at all.
  6. I *love* caching while on a cruise! I'm very excited that I have one coming up in about a month with a new country credit, Belize! I used to do it "blind" and print out pages ahead of time and try and find it based on clues, old logs, etc. Now a days I save in offline mode on the Geocaching app and I buy a small international data plan from AT&T so I can use a tiny bit of international data on my phone if needed.
  7. So many awesome stories! Hard to believe it is over 1/2 way through. We have managed to keep up the streak with mostly 3am and 4am caches... some close calls with DNFs but no misses so far! Good luck everyone!! Keep those stories coming.
  8. I wanted to start a positive post about the August 31 day challenge because I personally think it is a great idea, and I applaud Groundspeak for doing it. I hope we see many more of these types in the future! I wanted to hear about some of the fun, challenges and adventures that folks are having with getting a cache each day! This challenge has really helped my wife and I carve out more time together, which is awesome. We will only cache when we are together, and we often work opposite and strange schedules so we are having to do more caching at 2 and 3 am than normal. While at first it seemed like it was going to frustrate us, it has turned into something we both look forward to! We have had pretty good luck each day, except on the 10th. We weren't able to meet up until almost 330am on the 10th and we had 3 DNF in a row! 430am rolls around and we are exhausted from work and frustrated and decided to call it a night. Luckily we ended up being able to hit a quick one before work during the day on the 10th so we didn't miss the challenge. I'm sure it won't be the last time it happens... Good luck everyone!
  9. There was a time when finding a cache was the reward, and geocaching was more like an outdoor sport than a video game. Right - and there was also a time where phones were rotary and TVs were black and white... things change! Instead of getting mad at change, try embracing it and finding the good in the change. And don't forget that people cache for many different reasons. I'm not an "outdoorsy" person at all - in fact I pretty much hate the wilderness. I love doing "urban" caches... does that make me less of a geocacher?
  10. I feel the need to jump in here and say that I feel the souvenirs are awesome. I hope Groundspeak continues to do more things like this since it encourages people to be more active in caching and helps OUR hobby flourish! I know it has motivated me to cache more than I normally would and I have noticed more people visiting my cache over the past few days also. We HAVE to stay relevant in order to attract new and younger users/players.... and getting Souvenirs/Badges/Whatever are what is currently used in video games/apps to keep people actively playing.
  11. Hiya! I will be traveling to Paris next week and I would like to do a bit of caching on the side. The majority of my trip will be spent at Disneyland Paris and I have found the listing for the caches there and then I did a location search from those to get an idea of what is in the general area. I will not be traveling with a car but I will be able to take the metro and RER within the 5 zone range. What caches would I be able to hit that are close to a train station or within walking distance? It is difficult to tell without knowing the area if the Paris Ring caches are close. Thank you for any help you can give!
  12. I'm looking for a cacher that is near Urayasu, Japan to do the Sister Cities Cache. I live in Orlando, Florida and visited Japan last year and loved it and can not wait to go back!
