  1. It would be nice to see what caches in the entire country have the most Favorites votes. I would be inclined to check out the cache pages and likely add them to my Wish List.

I would like to have it to keep track of where one of my caches compares to all other caches without going to all 50 states one at a time. I have one with 114 favorites now. Last time I checked it only had 9 ahead of it. Took me about half an hour to go through all the states.

Acutally here is a better stat. I have a cache in Las Vegas that has I think 32 favorites. 2nd highest in Las Vegas. But percentage wise it has a 36% rate. That is the true favorite.

  2. There seems to be quite a few issue's arising on this forums where people have there cache denied for some reason or another. For example, being a magnetic strip ( No container ), or, someone having there cache too close to another. Another example would be, not having a puzzle allowed because outside programs are needed to solve it, sometimes caches are archived for being in the ground. I, and quite a few other disagree with specific parts of these guidelines. For example, I personally believe that caches in the ground should be allowed as long as the retrevial doesn't require digging. But, this thread isn't about what I think. What I want to know is if there is any debating in the guidelines. If enough people think something should change will it?

    Thanks!

Ok I have several caches where I have buried a coffee can with a PVC pipe in concrete. Pipe holds the cache. Yes I did have to use a shovel but NO digging required to find cache. It's just sitting in pipe.

  3. Is there a no go on placeing a geocach on school grounds? In my home town school I saw a spot I like to place a geocach on school grounds. Its out in the field away from the school building and playground. Just looking for information if its a no go.

Check the guidelines. It clearly says not to place cache on school property. Commen sense is if your lurking around a school especially during schools hours you might end up talking to the police.

  4. Hi All,

Question: If I had a small bison tube (say 1") that is hidden within a piece of wood (say 6" x 2" x 4"), for discussion sake, what size cache is it?

Would it be a micro (bison tube) or small (size of wood)?

I'm thinking small, but not totally sure.

    Thanks!

    KM

It would be a Micro. That's the container. The wood would be the camo.

  5. So for the last few days - since the big upgrade, come to think of it - I have not received any cache owner emails when my caches are logged, not when they are found, when I disabled one, etc. Anyone else?

Yes I noticed a find on one of my caches, but know email. Seems to be working today though.

  6. There's an evil hide near where I work and I've visited 3 times with no luck. Others have found it, some within minutes, while some gave up and logged a string of DNFs only for yet another cacher to find it.

    ...

You know that the cover over the bolts on the lamp post lifts up. Great place for a film canister. :)

whoever thought of this was a genuis. the rest are copycats. I have to admit. when i found my first one i was excited. now I never waste my time.

  7. First time I heard about geocaching was in 2003 on TV. I remember thinking to myself "Why would somebody want to find an old box under some bushes?". Later on I discovered the deeper meaning of geocaching and bought the Garmin Colorado I still use. Soon I was hooked :-)

Where and when did you hear about geocaching the first time?

I was at a family party. I friend was there with his GPS and laptop. He showed me somethings. I was totally amazed with the whole thing. I never new this existed. I left that night hooked and obsessed with the whole thing. I dreamed of making my first cache which I did. I know have 30 that I'm quite happy with.

  8. I have 130 plus caches and I've just come to accept cache migration is a fact of life. The only way to keep it where you want it is to tether it. As for TFTC or "I logged from my phone" I hate them. There's other threads on this by the way. Good luck finding them. I feel if a cache owner takes the time to give you an adventure can't you appreciate them with at least a few sentences. I have caches where I know you really have to work or take a good hike to get there. I have more than one in the area and all I get is "logged from my phone" on five different caches? However I hide my caches for everyone so I accept it. I do send a note to people who make good logs to let them know I appreciate it. The people who make good logs are also the ones I remember when I meet them at events.

I have some pretty clever and unique caches. Some people write great logs. One guy has found all my stuff and his standard reply is Found it. Thats it. One day i saw he hid 4 new caches. I found them which was easy and log the same thing. Found it. What would it take to impress this guy at all. What if he went to a cache and it was a alien spaceship with real aliens. He would say Found it.

  9. So today I get this log on my newest cache:

[Found it] November 13 by xxxx (104 found)

Caching with yyyy and zzzzzz who made the find. Had gotten buried under pine straw. Traded bands. Took TB left Jeep TB. TFTC SL.

I guess they never thought that someone would hide a cache under pine straw to keep muggles from seeing it. Sure enough I went to check on it and it was just sitting out in the open. It's about 100 feet from a baseball field and I've seen people walking their dogs by. So good thing I got out there quickly. I sent the finder an email letting them know that they should always rehide as they found it.

I have another that was moved from it's hiding spot so when I went to change the log I had to search everywhere.

2 other of my recent caches (including my original Golden Ammo Can for 1000 finds) disappeared over the summer. (both of those could have been hidden better, and were exposed by a rain storm).

Pile on a lot of the locals who like to put TFTC and it just wears on you.

I guess I should go read some of the great logs on my caches to relieve my frustrations.

I just don't know how people with 100 hides deal with all of them.

Well first of all I make all my caches which is 30 premium only. It will limit the traffic somewhat. Although I have had a few problems not many. I do try and make my caches people proof. Which is impossible. Hopefully they take the time to put back correctly. I have a cache that says it's in plain sight which it is. And don't move any rocks to find. It is the size of small marble. I have checked on it and at least twice I see people will put a rock on the only thing that is visable. They seem to think there improving it for you. But please replace like you found unless its obvious it needs help.

  10. This subject came up in another thread. Setting it up here as an 'on topic' discussion...

Question: Is driving something into the ground that will hold a cache above ground still 'burying' and a violation of the guidelines?

    Examples that come to mind:

    1. CO's have created holders for roadside caches by driving a small, angled PVC pipe into the ground to hold the cache above ground.

    2. A Nano that was glued to a nail and the nail was driven into the ground with the Nano above ground. Evil, but illegal?

    3. Parking Meter mounted in the woods.

    4. Signpost is installed by the CO with the intent of hiding a cache in the sign post.

    5. Sprinkler Heads on a spike.

    6. Fake popup sprinkler head containers.

    7. Fake drain cache.

    8. Fake PVC pipe cache

    9. Fake electrical junction box coming out of the ground.

    Discuss politely among yourselves! :)

    **Edited to add examples.

I've done the signpost. Done sprinkler. I've even hid cache in a real plant. In my opinion you have to have access to cache with your hands. Like lifting or opening something. I have buried pvc pipe to hold something visible above ground. But you can't hide something that you have to dig up. Who is going to bring shovel and how would you replace it.

  11. when placing caches, do most people want one that are easy to find or challenging? I am going to place 5 caches out in the spring. Plan on one being kid friendly, so easy. the rest I had planned to make fairly challenging, but in reading other threads it seems like it is becoming more of a numbers game than a challenge between seeker and hider.

I don't mind difficult caches and don't mind the extra time it takes to find them. I do not like difficult caches that in in high muggle areas. I prefer to search in relatively private.

    I would agree with that.

Definitely make them challenging. A few easy ones for kids is fine. Numbers really don't impress me. A good challenging find is much more fullfilling. How do you feel when you find you have to lift up a lampskirt. Ug.

  13. My closest unfound cache is a little less then two miles from my house. I've been saving close caches for fear I may run out of caches near me. Instead I drive tens of miles to hit the farther caches so I don't run out of close ones. To ease my fears, how far do experienced geocacherrs have to drive to find a geocache?

Here is my problem. There are times I'm going to be in an area. So I look for caches to find. It turns out the majority of them are D1. I rarely want to waste my time on a quick grab as they say. Whats the point since I'm not in this for the numbers. I enjoy something clever and unique. A lampskirt is not much enjoyment to me. So I end up going farther and farther to find at least a D2.

  14. LOL! Thanks for the stories. Makes me feel better!

Being the only DNF on a D1 is rough too. That was me 2 weeks ago.

I'd quit if I were you.

    :D

    PS: That's a wink, not a smirk

I always threaten to quit! But then I remember I have a membership. I also always go and find a huge ammo can or something obviously easy to get some self pride back after the horrible D1 DNF.

The CO gave me a hint to the cache I posted above. I didn't go look again yet but I don't understand where they mean! Crap.

Remember people rate there own stuff. I looked for a D4 1/2 expecting it to be impossible to find. It also had a Terrain of 4. It turned out to be a D1 1/2 Terrain 1 wheelchair accesible. Then next one is a D1 or 1 1/2 and I can't find it. The ratings aren't accurate.

  15. LOL! Thanks for the stories. Makes me feel better!

Maybe it isn't really a D1. We have a guy in our area who puts a D3 on his lampskirt hides. I'm confused. Maybe if he puts a D1 he knows nobody will look for it. As for me I don't waste my time on D1.

  16. So what is the longest time you have searched for a cache in a single visit. I recently placed a multistage that I did not think was terribly difficult but the FTF took 11 hours to do it (mainly because of an older GPS that was not very accurate). I congratulated them in person on their dedication and mentioned that I would have given up long before that. When I have my son with me a search of more than 15 minutes is too much for him! LOL

    After 30 minutes I get a headache.

  17. Hey there.

I have planned a cache, but now i've got a problem. The "place" where I was supposed to put a magnet isn't magnetic. And velcro and other things aint a possibility. It has to be a magnet (cant come with further details without destroying my idea).

Does anyone know of some kind of very thin metal tape, that I can stick at the place, and put my magnet on?

    Thx already! :D

Why don't you just get a small piece of metal and glue or screw or both to what you want to attach your magnetic to. I was fooled by cache that said magnetic. It was under wooden bench. CO had attached a piece of metal under bench then his magnetic was on it. I plan to use idea for myself soon.

  18. What is the purpose of the Premium Member Only Option ? I understand that Geocaching.com requires a paid membership for services beyond basic (GPX files ect.) but I don't understand why anyone placing a cache would want to exclude everyone but members. How does this promote the sport.... I placed several caches a few years ago and the remaining one is member only, don't know why. It was not intentional, and I have been unable to find a way to change it.

I am not being sarcastic here.. I really don't understand how this option benefits anyone ?

In my case I put some effort in creating and making my caches. I see some of them get beat up or cachers don't always replace correctly. Making them Premium just reduces the traffic a bit. If I make one virtually indestructible I would not make it Premium but what would that be.

  19. So I have 2 caches very close to my house along our daily dog walk route. Occasionally I will see a known cacher or someone I suspect of caching (tromping through the weeds near GZ) while we are out.

What is the appropriate etiquette? Should I ignore them, give them a little ribbing ("Hey whatcha doin?"), wait nearby (but out of sight) till they head back to their car and then chat with them.

My dog (named Cache) wears a cachekinz TB on his collar, so I always try to give them his code to they can discover him (if they want).

So, what's the consensus, ignore them, talk to them, stalk them???

Actually I was checking on 2 of my caches today and saw cachers at both. I did stop and say hello. Sometimes I do sometimes I don't. I don't want them to be uncomfortable.

  20. I did my first multi cache. I drove to one location spent some time and found article. Now I have cooridinates to drive to another location and spend some more time locating last article. So now I have spent twice the time and travel and I have only 1 find. Can someone tell me what's the point?

To have fun. If your only measure of fun is a find count, then I can't help you.

Ok I'm losing this battle. Acutally I'm not into numbers at all. I've only found 132 in 5 months since joining. But I do like to get paid. Working 2hrs and getting paid 1 is odd. I'll stick to traditionals. I love you guys.
