  1. Anybody want to hire my kids for some park/play area caches! Highest offer gets them for the day. Lowest offer has to keep them for a month.
  2. I often trail through my previous 'favourites' and enjoy doing so. As I tend to give out favourites quite liberally I sometimes take some back where the cache has been archived so I can reward deserving 'active' caches. They are your favourites so in my opinion you can use/amend them how you see fit.
  3. Search by name, not closest. (Find/Geocache/menu/search by name) The UK is too far away to be found when searching for nearest caches. Oh my goodness! Thank you thank you thank you!! You're a dear. I never would have figured that out on my own. It works! 4386.14 miles away. Thanks again! Many people like to work out and plan their own routes and caches that they would like to hunt out. However if you get stuck, enter a post on the UK forum stating what areas you are visiting and I am sure you will get lots of help in highlighting some 'must see' caches in the areas you are visiting. Have a great trip.
  4. Just a couple of hours ago I had a similar experience. I had just parked up at the start of the path to take a walk to search for a nearby cache. A lady was also getting out of her car in front of me and putting on her walking boots. After a couple of glances she then wandered across and asked if I would like to help her hunt for something. I smiled knowingly and said 'sure' expecting her to give me an explanation about geocaching. However, she reached into her coat pocket and brought out a smart looking woolen walking sock. She explained that she had had them in her pocket when walking here yesterday but one had dropped out of her pocket and she was retracing her steps today to try and find it. I agreed to look out for it and hurried off. After successfully hunting in the undergrowth for the particularly sneakily hidden cache, I was just signing the log book in the bushes around a well bushwacked area (not me) when the aforementioned sock lady walked past. I called out a cheery 'Hello again' so as to not surprise her too much and then was very tempted to shout after her 'haven't found your sock yet'... She said hello back and then it was her turn to hurry on her way. I now wonder if she was thinking the same thing and exactly how long was I going to carry on hunting for her sock?
  5. I also tend to only have between 2 and 6 in my favourites bank. After doing a group of caches recently which I really enjoyed and wanted to acknowledge with favourite points I scrolled down my historic list and pinched a few back that had been archived or in hindsight were maybe not as high on the list as I originally felt. I didn't really want to do this and sometimes wish there were more favourite points available to acknowledge all the ones that I enjoy.
  6. It is possible to state your opinion without being rude, it detracts from the forum. It may be a simple process to you, but for others it's not. I apologise if my comments came across as rude as this was not my intention. Maybe just a little too concise. In my opnion favourites should reflect your own view of the cache and I will often enjoy running back through my list to see how these caches are doing. It can be quite a cathartic process. There may be some divergence of views between cachers preferences but genearlly, over a period of time, the number of favourite points will provide a helpful barometer to judge the quality of the cache. If I tried to favourite caches purely for other peoples benefit I do not feel I would be providing a true record of my own experiences.
  7. Surely this whole thread is over analysing such a simple process. I give a favourite point because I enjoyed a cache. I dont need to over analyse the reasons, I don't need some sort of points criteria. I don't need to fit in with somebody elses formula. I give it a favourite point because I liked it. Don't over complicate a simple process.
  8. No way, how is that different to saying that traditional caches should be archived if the CO has no control over access to the cache? What if the local authority closed a park, rerouted a road, moved a footpath? Go down that route and we'd have very few caches of any kind. It isn't any different, that was my point. If a CO was unable to maintain a traditional cache because a park was closed/a Right of way was changed etc then tha cache would, at least, need some maintenance. With these webcam caches the CO just sits there saying tough luck and deleting visitors logs. I also make the following observations; - Who knows if half of those people on the pictures are the actual cachers. - I could ask my Aunt Dorothy to walk past and hold her TV remote control in the air and nobody would know if I logged it from 5000 miles away! - half of them you cant even tell if it is a real GPS. - I checked my local webcam cache and people are saying 'mines the car just crossing the picture in the background' etc etc. I have no problem with these WebCam caches but it just seems they are riddled with contradictions and I am surprised that GS haven't archived them.
  9. Thou set your sights too low and then appear to fail to achieve them.
  10. Unfortunately I just cant do it... I cant help leaving a proper log. I really enjoy recording my experiences and luckily I think it is often appreciated. The day I just start recording TFTC on caches is the day I will give up. All those that are proud of the quality of logs please, please, please keep logging your experiences in as much detail as possible. You are educating future caches in the art of what I believe is one of the most important 'on-line' parts of this game.
  11. I would think they will keep caching the way they want to. If they feel they have done enough to earn their smilie they will log it as a find and take the odd deleted find as an occupational hazard, argue the toss on the cache page (and in this case the forum ) and will soon move on undeterred. My post is in context to this thread. It does not matter how much effort you make, if you do not meet the requirements of a find, it is not a find. Is that better? Yep. Totally agree and I think the OP knows this aswell but will continue to log as they see fit. They have made the effort to be there so will try and claim a find. Some CO's will accept this (and may suffer the consequences) some won't. However, shouldn't GS archive all Webcam caches where the CO has no control over the availability and maintenance of the Webcam. It could be unavailable for ages and would be just like a traditional cache where there is no log at various differing times of the week and the CO has no control over providing a new one!
  12. I would think they will keep caching the way they want to. 13. From a CO's point of view I have occasionally been contacted by a cacher that had reported that they felt they had found the remains of one of my caches. In one particular case they had found the hollowed out piece of wood which matched the clue and they described it exactly. I went and checked and they were absolutely right and I repaired and replaced the container/log. I noticed that they had recorded their visit as a DNF so I contacted them and told them that they could amend the log to a find as in my opinion they had visited the area, found what they needed to find and it was (partially) down to me that they did not have a log to sign. We both went away happy.
  14. I'd take the 20 million, move to another area and you would never see the name 'Legochugglers' on a log again. ....you may see a new account start up in the new area about a month later though.
  15. Come on, the OP is new to the game and just looking for a pointer. The spoiler is clearly on the listing and the CO would surely have removed it if they had a problem with it. Its hardly a challenging puzzle or totally original container. I'm sure you would have looked at the spoiler if you had a problem with finding the cache.
  16. On a secondary but probably more pertinent note I have often been concerned that the growth of geocaching and the greater awareness and saturation of areas could cause certain local councils to overreact to certain isolated issues and ban Geocaching. This could easily spread to other councils and would severely affect geocaching as we currently know it. It would be interesting to understand the reason beind this particular council making this decision.
  17. Firstly, it would appear that you have placed a popular cache so i am not surprised you are upset by this decision. Have you contacted graculus to 'discuss' the situation and point out that you feel that the land is now owned by a trust from which you have specific permission. Like most vocations in life sometimes we have to proactively challenge decisions in a positive and constructive manner and on the face of it you would appear to have a good case. I hope you are successful and no doubt you will keep us appraised on this thread.
  18. In my opinion, when you look at a cache page with a view to searching for it then you generally have a good idea what you are going to find at GZ. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised and sometimes I am disappointed. Sometimes I am 'wowed' and sometimes I feel the need to point out that the cache is not particularly good quality. In the olden days cachers may feel they were extremely lucky that every cache was supposedly top quality but I dont necessarily believe that was actually the case. The most important factor of this discussion is that ultimately it is down to me. As long as I continue to enjoy checking out every cache on my (quite limited) travels then I am happy to get on with doing it. I love the saying 'If caching these days is so bad why am I having so much fun'. Me and my boys generally always do. I dont need to sort out the 'Wheat from the chaffe' because I am happy just taking each cache as it comes, dont get stressed and keep an open mind. Only GS can really make a real difference to cache quality and that can only come from stricter guidelines and reviewers actually being tasked with asessing quality, neither of which is going to happen. In the meantime I will just keep caching one smilie at a time and enjoy the fact that I am able to do so.
  19. I would think it is quite reasonable for a Reviewer to understand how a puzzle cache is solved so they can ensure cachers don't have to do something illegal, immoral or unnecessarily dangerous to find the cache. I assume they wouldn't need chapter and verse but just a general idea of what is involved.
  20. I have walked over to people looking suspicious around GZ on many occasions and asked them if they have found it or are they geocaching and on several occasions they have answered 'what?'. It sure gets them moving away nice and quickly so I think its a good strategy to adopt if you want a win win situation. You either have some help to look or clear the area around the weirdo.
  21. One important thing to consider. Whilst you may not have a problem with cachers approaching and searching round your property please consider everybody else. Do all the other members of your family know about the cache. Do all neighbours in the vicinity know about the cache and the implications of people parking up and searching. Please also consider the searchers themselves. My heart sinks when I have to enter someones property especially when it is in full view of other houses/residents. Give consideration to the question, 'if I was approaching this hide, would I enjoy it?'
  22. I think we have already agreed with your comment and the previous ones about 'guidelines'. This is exactly why I made the point about EDUCATION. Surely you would prefer that PnG cache to be a little more interesting. Surely we should encourage people to express themselves, challenge the guidelines and make every cache they place something that is a little different. Posting videos of inspirational/different caches on you tube inspired a lot of cachers to give more thought to the type and place that they hid a cache and maybe Groundspeak ought to follow suit. As I stated in a previous post, if placers had to watch a mandatory video showing inspirational hides before placing one themselves I hope they may just give that extra thought to where/what they are placing. Additionally the video could demonstrate the reasons and downsides to bad cache placement then some real foundation could be clearly aired to support the guidelines and the whole ethos behind Geocaching.
  23. That needs to be a sig line... If my mind was in order I wouldnt be searching for plastic containers in the undergrowth and then debating with the world the correct way to do it!
