  1. Hi all I own a local cache (obviously) and will be moving out of the state in two weeks. I would like to transfer ownership to some very active fellow cachers. How would i go about doing so? Thanks F.O.M
  2. AOL really does suck...I am paying for features I never use and the only reason I dont stop doing so all together is because I LOVE my screen name (as sad as it is I have been with them for over 7 years...boy howdy I would love to have all that money back!!). I have never had any probs getting to geocaching.com thru AOL. Goi figure something that actually works.
  3. Never thought about giving them attention by posting. Oh well, I won't let it ruin my cache spirit. Thanks.
  4. Hey all, I live in San Diego California and have noticed a number of caches that have recently been muggled. Seems to be a heck of a lot more than usual in my opinion. I am tempted to map them and see if maybe it could be the work of a serial muggler. I dont want to point fingers but a couple of months ago a pair of young boys came on the geocaching.com scene, they found one or two and placed one. The ones they had found were found muggled by the next cachers, and they have since stopped logging finds and now all these muggled caches start popping up. I could be way wrong, and hope I am, but it seems like an awfully strange coincidence. Anyone else see a trend and if this is the case. how can we make it stop?
  5. I have seen I think 3 so far. One my sister almost grabbed with her bare hand while climbing over a rock, one that was dead on the trail (threw rocks at it to make sure...since it smelled. had flies buzzing around it, and didn't move after several direct hits we accepted that it was of no threat), and one long thin one that was hiding right where the cache I needed was. That one scared me because it looked beat up and dead (I had stopped in my tracks close to it and thought at first it was a stick). I yelled snake as I clotheslined my son as he started past me. I tossed a rock at it and the thing didn't move so my son, in his infinite wisdom of all things great and small, started forward to grab the cache. I grabbed him and scolded him just as he saw the snakes tongue flick out (I thought it was a bug on it). Tossed another rock and nailed it...that thing sounded off like a heavy metal concert! I had never heard one before but had been told that they don't sound like hte ones in the movies. I took off in the opposite direction, my son wants to continue checking it out (he got chewed out for that one). When I yelled at him he joined me several feet away on a high spot and we listened to that thing hissing for 5-10 minutes! It is very true, you never forget that sound and I made my son be very quiet and listen to it so he will never forget it either. I am so glad my daughter wasnt with us because she has a tendency to run ahead without thinking or looking...scary thought!
  6. I am a silver surfer fan since childhood and love your avatar!
  7. I have always wanted to do the rte 66 cruise! I own a 69 camaro but until I get her looking and running right, this will remain a dream for me. To combine the car crusie AND caching would be even better LOL!
  8. My significant other is good at puzzles but he doesnt cache with us. Wonder if I could get him to help figure out the TT puzzle? Doesnt hurt to ask right?
  9. Thanks, I like it <grin> Actually I am planning on popping the question to her this summer. I am going to set up an "Amazing Race" type of quest for her. I use the word quest as no one will be racing us. I plan on getting her to travel all around with me during our vacation. Doing puzzles, challenges and what not to gain rewards and hints at each leg (which will be friends places or meaningful locations) all accumulating into one big puzzle at the end where I will somehow pop the question. Haven't completly worked that part out yet. But I will deffinately be working some small amount of GPS work and geocaching into it somehow But alas, thats off topic so I'll stop typing now... good thing my girl doesn't read the forums That is so awesome!! She will definitely accept!
  10. My kids and I like the cartoon The Fairly Odd Parents. They dubbed me their Fairly Odd Mother. I figured I wasnt the only "odd" one in this family, afterall we are related . So, we agreed that we are the Fairly Odd Family and the name stuck. Fairly Odd Mother of the Fairly Odd Family <:0)
  11. wow! those were great stories!! I don't have any worthy of reading...someone placed a cache in a nasty plant that has leaves like razors. I reached through, knowing what the long leaves can do, and ended up getting cut up anyhow! Took a week for the scratches to heal. *I'm such a whiny girl* LOL!! Does it count if there was a small amount of blood drawn? I guess I am not a die hard cacher just yet
  12. sounds like a whole lot of fun! I'd love to have one like this closer to home!!
  13. wow and I thought geocachers were a nice group of people. Only a handful were actually helpful, and shame on those who attacked the original poster and others. We come here for advice and help, not to be attacked by people we thought we shared a passion with. So what, no one is perfect, typos happen, get over it. If ya can't read between the lines or overlook such a thing, at least have the decency to resist your urge to make corrections and HELP the person with his/her question. If you can't overlook it, then simply don't reply. Just my 2 cents.
  14. I have only met 4 other cachers while out on the trail. Seems I am always a day behind some of the others or a few hours. This weekend I had some caching planned and would have run into several!! Darn it!
  15. snake season is definitely going to put a damper on my caching. My kids are city slickers and not very cautious. It scares the tar out of me to think they would literally step on a rattler and get bit. Not sure what I would do first...pass out or scream! I have only seen a couple so far while out with my sister and that was enough to freak me out. Caterpillars are fine with me, but fat rattle snakes are too much for this woman! Any advice on how to avoid them or scare em off before I run into them?? Fairly Odd Mother
  16. Depends on how tall you are. 275 at 6'2"= nice. 275 at 5'5" = a bit more man that I need. Is 6'1" @ 180 considered too skinny? Nah that sounds about right. My man is 205 and 6ft, solid yet snuggly.
  17. You might be a geocacher if you constantly point out cache locations while driving around town with friends or family...very irritating after the third time...or you are constantly looking for 'the perfect cache location' wherever you go.
  18. Just hit $2.49 here in San Diego at the cheap station. Yes it will be putting a damper on our adventures because I heard it will be going up more soon. I will have to do those gas saving day trips...get everything done in a day, throw in some caching along the way, and stay close to home the rest of the time. *sigh*
  19. I was given a pair of Nike low top hiking shoes...feel like sneakers because they are light, but have a nice tread and are comfy. I tried a pair of Timberland hiking boots and like those too but I prefer being able to 'feel' where I am walking. Softer shoe vs solid shoe. My converse (Chuck's as my son tells me) which I wore recently thinking the cache was a quick one (why I never read the logs is beyond me) and those are certainly not made for climbing over rocks or walking long distances LOL!
  20. unfortunately a lot of states are considering this. I think its awful. We are eco-conscious, friendly bunch looking for fun and entertainment with like minded people. I sent out letters about a bill regarding smog laws that would have put my classic car in the junk yard. I think we should check this out for our individual states and get on it before another of our freedoms is taken away.
  21. Geocaching is a great way to get out of the house and off the couch! My 3 children and I have faced a few challenges of hard to find caches and it has taught them to try harder, to not give up so fast, and that sometimes success is just in the hunt itself. We get to spend one on on time together if I take them out individually. This gives them a chance to open up without their siblings around. It gives me a chance to listen. Geocaching has also helped them learn to work as a team, gives them a chance to use their individual talents and strengths to help us find the final "prize", and has taught them that there may be an easier way to do something than the way that is right in front of them. We have used geocaching as exercise, to discover new places right in our own city (most of which we haven't seen before, or have gotten to enjoy in new ways), to even learn navigation and problem solving. I think it's great when we charge up a hill without stopping to rest or feel as if our muscles will give out before we reach the top. It is a kick to realize we are getting in shape AND having fun. I personally love being out in nature so the trail hikes are my 'thing'. The kids don't mind that and are beginning to enjoy simply listening to the world around us, opening our eyes to the things we don't often notice. I know the kids prefer finding caches around town, spending a few hours driving and walking around trying to find as many as we can for the day. We have really enjoyed geocaching and look forward to doing it more often as summer approaches. I feel in little ways it is teaching my kids skills that they can apply to other things in their lives. I would never admit this to them lest I ruin the fun Lori Fairly Odd Family in San Diego CA vee8@aol.com
