  1. Very cool. I'm wonder how much legitimacy came from having the geocaching book. Personally I won't own an Idiots or Dummies books, I'm not buying something that insults me before I buy it buy carrying some sort of geocaching book seems like a good idea.
  2. Like most things the reality is somewhere between "it's the end of the world" and "everything couldn't be better" Personally I looked into some of the scientist claiming oil is renewable and a lot of them are 1) not experts in a field related to oil exploration 2) being paid by oil companies. From reading Scientific American (usually a reliable source) it seems we're not running out of oil anytime soon but we might be running out of oil that's easy to get. Northern Canada, for examples has huge oil deposits, but it's mixed with a type of sand that isn't easy to separate.
  3. Sounds like a nice thing to do! I sure wouldn't complain if someone wanted to send me a Geocoin. I assume you mean unactivated? If it was an activated one I don't know if I'd really care as much. I'd probably say no thanks - just drop it in a cache. Sorry I should have mentioned it's unactivated.
  4. I started my cache, Alien Invasion (GC1R4X7), with a dozen glow in the dark aliens. The last of the aliens have now be removed from the cache, ending the invasion. When I setup the cache I decided to send the person who took the last alien a geocoin or travel bug. Obviously I didn't mention this in the cache description. I contacted the person who took the last alien offering them a geocoin. I have a two part question for members with more experience. Has anyone done something like this before? Do you think this is a good idea, or is it just adding complications? Thanks for your feedback. I'm very new to geocaching but I'm having a lot of fun and want to try doing something different.
  5. I posted this on my blog but thought it would be a good idea to add it to the geocaching.com fourm as well. According to the Harrison Daily Times the local city council is considering allowing geocaching in the Maplewood Cemetery. If you live near or in Harrison this would be a good time to politely contact the city council and let them know the benifits of being fiendly to geocachers. Read all about it here and visit http://www.cityofharrison.com/ to contact the city council.
  6. From the symptoms you've described you really should carry an EpiPen (and be willing to use it) and travel with people who are willing to use it on you. Talk to your doctor and find out what (if any) treatments are available. Some of the post seem to be confusing your allergic reaction to typical poison ivy symptoms but the reaction you're experiencing is much more serious. Also you might want to get a medic alert bracelet even if you only use it when hiking. If you are unable to speak or are unconscious it will help ems and er staff some clue to the problem. I'm kind of curious, do you have any allergies to other plants? I'm not allergic to poison ivy, but my skin seems to breakout if I even look at it so I usually try to carry alcohol pads wtih me, they won't stop your skin from reacting but if clean the area it usually limits it spreading.
  7. Have you considered using the iron cross, or just leave out any symbol?
  8. Thanks for all the tips. We ended up getting the multi-pass, which is the way to go since (as a few people mentioned) the individual attractions are a little weak but when taken together were a lot of fun. As always whenever I've visited Canada I've been impressed with the friendliness of everyone. I was really surprised by the international makeup of visitors since I always thought of the falls as being a relativity local attraction. One thing I wish I did ask about before going was restaurant recommendations. I'm sure they're some great places that we missed out on. I'm not a fan of chains and have a limit of the amount of fried food so dinning was a little tough. Dufferin Islands was amazing but seems like it doesn't get a lot of visitors, which is too bad since it's a short walk from the main attractions. Sorry I wasn't clear regarding geocaching vs. general tourist info. My wife isn't really a catcher but is a good sport so we had a rule that we would try to hit as many caches as possible but it's wasn't our main reason for the trip. We ended up only having time to find the 1st part of three different puzzle caches that we had to give up on due to scheduling and/or my 5 year old son's short attention span. Personally I really like puzzles and the ones near Niagara Falls seemed really interesting. Thanks again.
  9. I've visiting the Canadian side of the falls with my two children (ages 8 and 4). This is our first time visiting the falls and I was hoping some locals or someone familiar with the area could give me some suggestions what we can do. Thanks in advance.
  10. The Garmin Etrex Vista HCx has been good to me. It's not the cheapest but it's got the best "bang for the buck".
  11. No idea why I feel like chiming in on this one but, the Sea Shepard guys are going to get someone killed. The second in command doesn't know anything about navigation. I'm amazed at how many of those zodaic's are sent out with first timers. Seriously save the whales (or don't) but the Sea Shepard people are using their volunteers as canon fodder.
  12. I've used a samsung blackjack 2, unlocked so I don't have to pay a monthly fee for gps that is built into the the phone. Unfortunately the built in gps isn't very accurate but from what other people told me it's typical of gps phones. I know people who swear by the HTC Tilt but haven't used it myself. I've also used my blackjack with the garmin 10x which is very good but only works with garmin' software.
  13. 5 minutes of playing got me this http://www.kilroy.info/test_kml.html I don't what your computer knowledge is so if you know basic HTML you should be able to figure it out based on my directions. If this is too much trouble and you want me to put this together for you let me know. Also if anyone else seeing this thinks it's something they would want I would be willing to build it in a way that anyone could use it (assuming it doesn't break the Groundspeak Terms of service). all I did was go to the travel bug page and click "View in Google Earth" Once it came up in google earth I selected save as > smegal.kml then uploaded the file smegal.kml to my server so it had the URL www.kilroy.info/smegal.kml I then went to google maps and typed http://www.kilroy.info/smegal.kml in the search field At first google didn't display the map, I tried again 5 minutes later and it appeared I then clicked on "link" and chose the embed option I saved the embed code to a text file called test_kml.html and saved that to my server so the URL is http://www.kilroy.info/test_kml.html I'm not going to see what it takes to embed this into a igoogle gadget but I'm assuming that's going to be pretty easy.
  14. I'm a developer who's been looking for an excuse to play with google maps and igoogle. I think this is very easy to do (but I've said that before and been wrong). I'll let you know what I find out.
  15. Like all opinions mine is worth exactly what you paid for it. As someone who majored in film production I found criticism is easier to take if the person ripping you apart is a failed eastern European filmmaker. Please imagine everything being said in a thick Russian accent that only is only found in James Bond villains. First, What I disliked Falling out of the hammock and Rewinding the narration Seriously, please kill these scenes. It's so hacky it hurts, seriously it's Americas Funnest Home videos stuff. Add some real information "a genius put some sundries..." tell the viewer the person's name or tell them that the person is completely unknown, tell people what was in the cache. How about how many people are involved now how fast geocaching has grown. Relax a bit, this is a pretty un-eXtream hobby. Watch This Old House or New Yankee Workshop. Norm Abram doesn't act like he's doing something thrilling but he does act like someone who takes what he does seriously. "Thus was born the geo man..." are you on a mission from god or possibly a superhero? How about changing it to something like "I love the outdoors and hiking and geocaching gives me one more reason to explore..." No need to curse unless you're being attacked by a bear, shark or Bigfoot. Also the comment "this sucks" then why I am watching, only share discouragement with the audience if are faced with real difficultly, if you have some drama behind it. What I liked You seemed very into what you were doing, it seemed like you were having a lot of fun You showed a lot of the spontaneous reactions to your surroundings The location Panning for gold was interesting If any of these comments hurt your feeling or are discouraging please keep in mind I'm sitting at my desk wearing a monocle and petting a cat and have just left James Bond alone so he can escape.
  16. Wow sorry to hear about your illness. Do know how many caches are close to your home? Where to you live? Do you have anyone who can go with you at least when you start out?

  20. The most important thing I bring with me is water, and I bring more then I'll need for the whole day.
  21. My kids get a lot more excited about hiding then finding, but they're 8 and 4 so this could change any day. Since we just started I've been holding off on hiding more until we get more experience but I've got 4 ammo cans waiting to go out.
  22. I really like GateCatcher and I'm surprised it' isn't mentioned on the forums more often. So far it's one of the most stable apps for windows smartphones (smartphones don't have a touch screen).
  23. most of the info on this site is for working with copper or brass but some of these chemicals should work on steel. http://www.sciencecompany.com/patinas/patinaformulas.htm#17
  24. Thanks, you confirmed what my wife already knows, that I need glasses I fixed the picture and uploaded it again.
  25. Not trying to be funny, can you make out the tracking code? It looks totally blurry to me.
