  1. Yes, it was a trackable hotel. And they had their own rules about if you took one, you had to leave one. It was a number of years ago so my memory is sketchy but that was one of the points of the argument that I took more than my allotment as well. My intentions were totally unselfish but they didn't see it that way. Funny, but I think someone didn't secure the lid on the container properly and it got flooded out so the cache was removed.
  2. I didn't consult the TB owners at first about holding onto their trackables but this cache owner got me thinking so I did. The one TB owner I heard from was thrilled that their bug was travelling three provinces away. She was the leader of a youth group and it was perfect for this group to see their trackable travel so far. The cache owner, who's cache I took the travel bugs from, became verbally abusive as time went on and would not let this go. I ended up calling in the people at Groundspeak to intervene and they issued a warning to this person. It got pretty crazy. I guess travelbugs can bring out the best and worst in people.
  3. I would think that working in a prison would certainly change your perspective on people. I won't lose sleep over losing this one but it is hard not to harbor a slow burn. While we're on the topic of missing TBs, I put one in a cache in Calgary. From there it went missing almost immediately. I've noticed that if someone picks up the TB and places it in another cache before they have logged it out of the first cache, it can get lost forever. At least I think that's how it happens. I bet many TBs are lost this way. I did find a geocoin back in 2010. It was called The Compass Rose 5th Anniversary Geocoin and it was the most beautiful coin I have ever seen. I can't believe someone would release it out into the wild. Anyway, I kept track of it and it kept travelling for the next 5 years until 2015 where it was lost in Zurich, Switzerland.
  4. I'm coming to realize that my experience is pretty common. Wow, it really shakes your confidence in the honesty of strangers. I actually didn't put a sentimental value on this piece. It was launched at the same time as a pewter canoe by another cacher and we were interested in seeing who would reach the Pacific first. Well, it wasn't mine. Anyway, when it reappeared, that's when my interest in it grew and wanted it returned. It would make a good conversation piece and also make a great key fob since I've become very interested in kayaking in the past few years and I haven't been able to find such an item since I bought it at the Cottage Show back in 2012. I guess I was hoping that someone would have an outside the box suggestion on how to get it back but if so many people have had this experience (especially those who had been in contact with the "trackable maggot") I don't have a hope. But then, you say not to give up hope. Life can have many strange twists and turns so maybe I should be patient. Thanks to the both of you for sharing your stories. I'm feeling much better after reading them. You have helped me.
  5. Thank you Goldenwattle. Misery loves company (the truest of sayings). I'm sorry for your loss too. I guess what annoys me the most about all of this, is that that cacher was willing to return it to me when I first contacted him/her/they - who knows! I was so excited but then they started "playing games", almost taunting me. All they had to do was slip it into a cache and I would drive to get it but they would leave me hanging when I asked if I could meet them or pick it up. The last straw came when they described an area where I could go to get it and then no more information was given. I was so exasperated that I told them to "keep the dadgum thing". I regret that now but they had pushed me past my limits. I also see that this person is actively geocaching after an 8 year hiatus so it's not like they have retired from the game. I have put out a few travel bugs over the years but all have gone missing so I've given up on that aspect of geocaching. I will check out your link that you posted. I hope yours does resurface again.
  6. What do you do when you know someone has your trackable but won't put it back in circulation or give it back? I launched the trackable "Waterwalker" in April 2012. It is a pewter kayak and its goal was to reach the pacific ocean. It circulated around southern Ontario for two years and then the last log read that it was given to a cacher by his uncle to hide. Then all logs stopped until January of 2022. I received a notification that the last cacher who had Waterwalker found it in their closet and was about to put it back in circulation. I was thrilled! My trackable had come back! I messaged the person who found it in their closet and asked if they would not rehide the kayak but rather send it back to me, or, if it was more convenient, hide the trackable in any cache, let me know which one and I would come and get it. This person is in Oakville and I am about an hour's drive away. I messaged with this person for about seven months. They wouldn't answer for weeks and then they would give an excuse why they couldn't send it back. To make a long story short, they stopped responding. They haven't rehidden the trackable and it looks like they won't be returning the TB any time soon. (I even gave them my address to mail the kayak to me and I offered to pay the postage). Does anyone have a suggestion? It's quite a unique item and I would like it back.
  7. Thank you L0ne.R. You answered my question nicely!
  8. What is the feeling among cachers about putting out new geocaches at this time when we are asked to stay at home because of the pandemic? I realize that location is a big factor so one wouldn't want to place one in an urban setting. I feel that it provides a form of entertainment as long as we practice social distancing while hunting and clean our hands after finding and handling the container. Am I wrong? Any thoughts?
  9. Well, excuse me! I have no intention of cheating! I'm not asking for the solution to the puzzle. I have used a ROT 13 and have solved part of the puzzle. I have looked at the second part upwards, downwards and sideways to no avail and it is driving me crazy. I thought that if I could ask some questions about the possibilities available to solve that second part, it would free me to continue to solve. Thank you Cache Shadow. I really thought there would be a forum for puzzle discussion but now I see why there is not. I would like to end this discussion now.
  10. I am working on a puzzle cache. I would rather not ask the CO for a hint because I would like to say that I figured it out on my own. Is there a forum to discuss puzzles?
  11. I thought that hiding caches along the Bruce Trail was no longer allowed but I have seen some recently placed. Has the ruling changed or are there exceptions to the rule?
  12. I went to "my lists" and was able to download my caches from there. Thanks again for the tips. I'm so happy that it worked and I'm back in action. Many thanks to everyone for your help!
  13. Thank you to everyone for your help. Without this forum, I don't know what I would have done.
  14. Thank you. I tried the "sent to list" option and then tried downloading the list but that didn't seem to work. But then, I only basically know computers so it most likely is something I did/did not do that was the problem. I will do my best to try your suggestions. I really appreciate your help.
  15. Well, here we go again! Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, has once again updated my computer's Windows system to 10 and now when I go to load caches onto my Etrex 20, Garmin does not recognise it. As I was advised by the community to do previously, I went to internet options to list my.garmin as a trusted site but it is already listed. Up to now, I have had to use Internet Explorer to load my caches since no other browser will work. I've also reset Internet Explorer settings and even cleared the Windows temp directory but have not been successful. Is there anyone out there who could help me with this problem? I had to use my iphone yesterday to go caching because my gps is totally useless now. My iphone's battery died after 4 caches - good thing I had a power pack to recharge out in the field. I would appreciate any help - I've received great help in the past. Thank you in advance!
  16. Here's a shot in the dark. I once saw a cache hidden under a clump of dirt. The clump of dirt had been glued into a mass and the micro cache was hidden within and under it. Very clever. One would have to turn the clump over to find the cache. I doubt that this is the solution because Carni has mentioned that nothing needs to be "turned over" because the cache is in our view. I just thought I would share that. Good luck!
  17. Thanks for the link. I'm going to try it. When I plugged my garmin into my computer about 30 minutes ago, I got an error message from Garmin and a link to fix it which I clicked. After a couple of minutes I was told that it was fixed. I thought that this was the answer to my map problem but it wasn't. I'm going to try the link you sent me as well. One other thing, I went to set up in my gps, clicked map, clicked select map and saw that Topo Ontario V3 was enabled. I changed this to Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR and thought that that may solve my problem. It did not.
  18. No, I didn't download a Calgary map but I was here last year and I don't remember not having a map. I was also in California recently and had a map there and didn't download one. Could you tell me how I would download a map? Thank you for your reply.
  19. I just arrived in Calgary for a holiday, turned on my Etrex 20 and saw that no map was displayed. I recently had trouble loading caches on it after switching my computer system to Windows 10. I solved that problem by downloading and using the Firefox browser. Is it possible that something happened to it while going through the airport security x-ray? I would appreciate any help - I really want to get out there and geocache. (I was able to find a cache in the city of Calgary but it would be a lot easier with a map)Thanks!
  20. Problem solved. I'm not sure what I did, but I am now able to download caches onto my Garmin gps. Thank you for your reply.
  21. I just went to the geocaching website and tried to download a cache and it worked. I'm not sure if it was your link that helped but if it was, I thank you very much for passing on that information. Now I can go and enjoy my day. Thank you once again.
