  1. I've just tried the latest version of the OS 1:50K style on my GPSMAP 60CSX and all roads draw at all zoom levels regardless of the detail setting. This makes the map just about impossible to use when zoomed out as all the land is just covered by roads. The same problem also occurs in Basecamp. EDIT: Just tried 130816 and it has the same problem. It is just Minorhighways that display at all zoom levels. Other road types seem to work correctly.
  2. What device are you using and what app? It's best to post technology based questions in the GPS and technology forum.
  3. It's best to post questions like this in the GPS and technology part of the forums. You are more likely to get a response there.
  4. You need to Archive the cache if you don't want it to be active anymore. Go to the cache page whilst logged in and click 'Archive listing' on the panel on the right. Hope this helps!
  5. Not sure if my problem is related to this. I can (obviously) log into forums successfully. However, all three accounts in my household (myself and two daughters) can't log onto main geocaching.com site. For ease of use and to monitor their accounts, I have my email as primary on all three accounts. I did this after an unknown adult male cacher attempted to 'friend' my 11 year old. So no, I do not want to change this setup. It is fairly easy to disable the friend feature. I believe it is just in the account settings.
  6. Everything works fine for me and loads fast. Both the beta maps and the original maps work with personalisation so I can see all my finds as smileys and hides as stars and I can also hide my finds or hides. I like the new homepage and navigation and the fixed width looks fine. The only problem I have had is with viewing images from a log - if I move my mouse over the image window from one side to the other and back, the image flickers and jumps to the left of the screen briefly. It's usable but a bit annoying. This only happens when there is more than one image with the log so the arrows appear. Overall, I am pleased with the new site.
  7. I live next to Poole Harbour in the UK and have found a couple of caches by boat. I might place a few around the shores during the summer as there aren't many at the moment. I'd like to find somewhere to place a boat only cache but I am not sure where at the moment...
  8. If you are using the 60csx, then you are using a memory card as it doesn't have built in memory. Depending on the age of the unit, it will have come with a 64MB or 1GB memory card installed (The memory card is located in a slot under the batteries). This is what the maps are loaded onto. You can access the memory card by plugging the unit into your computer and going to main menu, setup, interface, and selecting USB mass storage on the unit. This will allow your computer to directly access the memory card. You can then delete the faulty maps and anything that shouldn't be there. The maps are stored in a folder named Garmin in a file named gmapsupp.img. There may also be a folder called POI in the Garmin folder that contains custom Points of interest. Other than this, there shouldn't be anything else unless the unit is set to store track logs onto the memory card. If it is, there will be a lot of files that named with the date the file was created (yyyymmdd) and ending in .gpx. These are not stored in any folder.
  9. Make sure that you have the latest firmware and software installed using Garmin WebUpdater. Also try deleting the maps from the memory card and reinstalling them. Make sure there is nothing else on the memory card that might be causing problems. What software are you using to install the maps?
  10. 16 and usually cache alone or with my Dad. He's useful when it comes to transport!
  11. I update the maps on my GPS every time TalkyToaster releases a map update. I do this because I am working on the open street map and I like to be able to see and use my corrections and additions asap after I make them. If I wasn't updating regularly for this reason, I would still probably update every update or perhaps every two weeks as Open Street map is still changing and expanding fairly rapidly and having the most up to date and reliable map is fairly important and useful. Hope this helps
  12. I think you have explained it well and I agree with your comments. With regards to using Google Earth..... I note you are located somewhere on the South Coast..... Take the roundabout in Poole at N 50 42.449 and W 1 55.532... Memory Map OS shows elevation: 108ft and Google Earth shows elevation: 127ft. If you are setting your known elevation with Google Earth, could this be the reason for the discrepancy??? Might not be right, but just a thought.... I have tried an experiment for several locations and compared the elevation on the topo map on my GPS (a third party map), the elevation on google earth, and the elevation on the free elevation data on Anquet Maps. I found similar results to what you found. The topo map and google earth always give the same elevation suggesting that they are produced from the same elevation data. I have found out that the topo map is produced from NASA SRTM V2 height data. The elevation from Google earth and the elevation from Anquet Maps are always different but vary by how much. In some locations Google earth is reading 5 or 6 ft higher and in others, it is reading 30 feet higher. This is quite possibly the reason for why the elevations of Google earth do not agree with the GPS auto-calibrated ones. Thanks for that tip. In future, I will keep in mind that Google earth elevation is not always as accurate as you might think.
  13. My understanding of the two calibration options on Garmins is that calibrating it to your current elevation, tells it that the current ambient pressure that it is reading = the elevation you input and then it uses that to work out future elevations accurately (unless the weather changes (the ambient pressure at a fixed altitude)). To calibrate it to the correct pressure, you enter the current BAROMETRIC pressure for you location AT SEA LEVEL and then it works out the difference between the ambient pressure that it reads at your location and the barometric pressure at sea level to work out your current altitude (as the pressure difference between altitudes is always the same (unless each altitude is experiencing different weather)). I know that it needs you to enter the pressure at sea level for your current location because it asks for the barometric pressure in the manual and not the ambient pressure. The ambient pressure is the actual pressure at your location and the barometric pressure is calculated sea level pressure using ambient pressure and elevation (explained below). Both these methods are designed to compensate for different weather which causes the ambient pressure at a fixed altitude to change. Neither of these methods actually correct the barometer in the GPS if it is reading the ambient pressure incorrectly. I believe this is calibrated at the factory and then not changeable by the user. The GPS works out the barometric pressure by taking the current ambient pressure that it reads, your current altitude according to it (if this is wrong then the barometric pressure will also be wrong) and then adds the known pressure difference between your current altitude and sea level which gives it the current pressure at sea level for you location. The pressure that you will get from your local weather station is also the pressure at sea level which it will work out using the method above using the elevation of the pressure sensor on the weather station. Can someone tell me if this is all right please? Sorry if I haven't explained it very well. One other question is whether anyone knows a reason why the auto calibration in my 60csx almost always calibrates it about 20ft lower than my correct elevation? I am using google earth to give the correct elevation for my location and a non Garmin topo map on the GPS. Even when it is on and at the same elevation (although not the same location) for an entire day, it still calibrates too low. For example when I spent a day out in my boat, I calibrated it at my house to the correct elevation, when I arrived at my boat it was reading about 5ft above sea level (approximately correct as it uses chart datum as sea level) and then at the end of the day, it was reading 15ft below sea level and the tide was at about the same level as it had been in the morning. Can anyone explain a reason for this strange behaviour?
  14. You just need to use Garmin POI loader. It allows you to load any GPX file as POIs to your Garmin GPS or to a memory card. Hope this helps. Thanks, Mako-Shark, I'll give it a try. OK, tried it and it seems to work pretty seamlessly with the Mac. Finding documentation on how to load POI files onto the GPS was a bit more difficult. C'mon, Garmin, you can do better than that! I finally found a third-party site called POI Factory that explained it plain and simply. Thanks. Glad I could help

  16. I use Safari to download caches to my 60csx with no problems. Try reinstalling the plugin.
  17. Where did you delete the maps from? Were you using mass storage mode with the GPS connected to your computer and deleted them from there? If so, plug the GPS into your computer in mass storage mode and then go to trash and try and find the maps as they are probably still stored on the GPS but in a hidden trash folder. If you can't find them, then browse to your GPS device in finder, click "Go" on the menu bar and click "Go to Folder...". Type in ".trashes". This will take you into the trash folder on your GPS where deleted files are stored and you should be able to find the maps inside here. If you find them, copy them out of this folder to the correct location on your GPS, if you can't find them, then they are probably gone. Good luck finding them
  18. It is not possible to have actual OS maps on your GPS but Garmin offer UK topo maps that are created using OS map data. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1359 To get OS maps on your Mac that allow you to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks to and from your GPS, the only program I know of is Route Buddy. The program costs £69.50 and the OS explorer maps for it cost £19.99 per map and OS Landranger maps cost £11.99 per map. Maps of entire regions can also be bought. http://routebuddy.com/ Another program that I know of for viewing OS maps on your Mac, and creating routes and waypoints is Anquet maps. This program does not allow you to transfer data directly to and from the GPS but allows you to save waypoints and routes as GPX files and open GPX files. These files can be transfered to and from the GPS using a program such as Garmin Basecamp. The program itself is free and offers free satellite imagery and OS explorer maps vary in price from about £15 to £45 depending on the area covered by the map. Landranger maps are about £10 for entire regions. http://www.vpmaps.com/ I would recommend trying the demo of Route Buddy and the full version of Anquet maps to get a feel for the programs before choosing. Anquet maps include trial maps of a small area so you can see how the program works and what the different maps show. Hope you find a system that meets your needs. Just ask if you have any questions.
  19. There are several things you could try: 1) Try going to the maps setup page on the map tile options page (the page where you can tick and un-tick individual map tiles), press menu and select disable all, enable the basemap and see if it works, then try enabling each map one by one to see if it is a particular map. 2) Try reinstalling the maps on the SD card. 3) Try doing a master reset on the gps (backup all your waypoints, routes, tracks, etc. first). Google it to find out how. Are you using Garmin or third party maps? Hope you manage to fix the problem.
  20. Glad I could help! Have fun geocaching!
  21. Just tried this on my 60csx and it does this. You just start typing in the street name and it will list nearby streets that match that.
  22. I don't know then. I don't actually use the app so I don't know much about it but I know it did have a bug a while ago that caused it to tell everyone to go to a point off the coast of africa. I believe the work around then was to select the geocache on the map instead of searching for nearby caches. Hopefully someone else knows more about this problem. Good luck getting it to work.
  23. I have heard about a bug that makes it do this. Update the app as I think they fixed it in an update.
  24. Almost any pda will do what you want but if you think "paperless caching" is the only advantage to the new generation of gps, you're missing the other 75% of the improvements. Here's a few: + higher resolution display + better map handling - maps can be uploaded individually - no need to make it all one file + Wireless transfer + Chirp capability + 3D compass + simple, fast Pocket Query handling - just put the file in the right place on the gps and you have paperless caching This is just off the top of my head. There are many more advantages. I know that paperless caching is not the only advantage to newer GPSs but none of them are features that I think are good enough to be worth the upgrade. I don't think they are big improvements because: Ok, it's clear you've thought about it. The only reason I made my post in the first place was that some people seem to regard what they read here as gospel, so if anyone really thought the only advantage to new gps units was paperless caching, that would be wrong. But as long as you're satisfied with the 60 then I have no problem with that. I loved my 60CSx until the day I bought my 550 Oregon, then sold it a month later. Same thing for my wife and her 76CSx - once she had her 550, the 76's days were numbered. Fair enough. I will probably be sticking with my 60CSx until something new with a dramatically new feature/improvement comes out or I suddenly find myself with a lot of spare money (unlikely - I am a student).
