  1. They do around here. We have 3 or 4 of our regular reviewers that have archived caches as soon as they heard that a nail or screw was used to secure the cache (to anything). But if you use a Fire Tack, there is no problem. You are sure they couldn't have considered the other concerns knowschad listed?
  2. Nah, I stole the idea from someone here. I just know a good I dea when I see it. I make a lot of small caches (I keep a spare copy of most of my caches ready to go because I'm insane) and I often put the log in a pill bottle inside the actual container, but thats as far as I go. I definitely enjoy recycling/reusing containers from home, but not at the expense of a bad caching experience. I have found some perfectly fine pill bottle caches, but match safes can be had for less than a dollar at wall mart and Academy Sports has green ones for about the same. To me, it's worth it. I've also seen people use camo tape to attach a clothes pin. Seems smart, fast and cheap.
  3. I need a small container to fit in a rubber bat's mouth for a multi (possibly an urban night cache) I'm making near a popular bat related attraction in my area. The only things that fit in the bat's mouth are a AAA battery (it fits nicely) and a AA battery (better size for a log, but it protrudes a bit. Can anyone provide some recommendations on what size bison (or another micro container to use) to use? Some photos of possible containers next to a battery would be awesome. I'm not used to dealing with bison tubes and such, but I think this would be a cache I would enjoy finding (the location is as special as the goofy camo), so I suppose its time to learn... Help? Don't want to waste my money and I can't find one locally so far. EDIT: I'm very interested in the one they sell in the GC.com shop because it unscrews at the bottom and I like to throw them a dime or two when they have what I want.
  4. I'm not sure what this has to do with the OP... it has everything to do with the OP...GC can't be held liable for people's stupidity, that's what the Darwin award is for Not really though... The OP was asking specifically about the laws on the subject. Instead we get replies of people explaining why they don't need Groundspeak to judge danger in caches because they aren't stupid? Its beside the point. OP wanted to know about the specifics of the law, not why we think the rules are/should be a certain way. You can definitely be held liable for someone else's stupidity. If someone leans on a speaker and kills someone, I can be held liable for assuring that its safe. It doesn't matter if it was clear to everyone that the thing would tip if you leaned on it. I always see that on these forums. "You think this TB looks like it's been muggled?" "Don't hide something you can't part with." "... I didn't?" and many people have already stated that GS is not liable, now what? the example you are providing is in no way related to our case....YOU are the person responsible to ensure that those speakers are firmly in place...the store that sold you the speakers is not liable in this context GS is the store...they barely store the items for you, what you do with them is your own responsibility and i believe the GS disclaimer has already been posted on the previous page so the OP's question has been answered several times, however he has been asked twice to explain what his personal beef is with this subject and he keeps avoiding to answer...so afaic this is not exactly a "just out of curiosity" thread Maybe I wasn't clear. If I know they are dangerous and do nothing to stop them, I can be sued for negligence. It doesn't matter if I ever touched them. I am actually safer if I DON'T KNOW. That said, the basic premise of what you say is true. I work for the company, WE set it up and I have professional knowledge. It doesn't matter if I hire a rigger to do the actual rigging. Also, your analogy is a little shaky. The CO is the guy who made the cache GS is the one who lists it. Not sure how that relates to a rental or set-up company, but I suspect it's not 1:1 like you imply. And finally, I never one stated my information was terribly useful. In fact I said the oposite. I was just trying to inject something other than a repeated opinion. Perhaps, I'm crazy, but your response comes off as a little agressive/dismissive considering I don't actually disagree with you in the slightest. Something worth noting about criminal negligence from Wikipedia: But the larger percentage of deaths result from situations where there is either no intention to injure another, or only an intention to inflict less serious injury. The need is therefore to be able to distinguish between those who happened to be present when another died accidentally or through misadventure, and those who have contributed to the death in a way that makes them criminally rather than merely morally responsible. For example, suppose that A, an expert in kayaking, organises an outing for local children who are learning the sport. They travel to a large lake but, after an hour of paddling, they are overtaken by a violent storm and some of the children drown despite the fact that all are wearing life-preservers. If all the kayaks, paddles and ancillary equipment are shown to have been in good condition, the storm had not been forecast by the meteorological services, and it was reasonable for these children to undertake this type of outing given their level of skill, A will not have liability. But if many of the children were too inexperienced and a storm had been forecast, A might well be found liable by a jury. [edit] A stronger analogy would be using the above example. The Kyak instructor would be the CO I assume and GS would be the company who printed the fliers. However, I suspect if it could be PROVED the flier company KNEW they were advertising something that would get children killed, they could potentially be sued (not arrested) for some form of negligence. I'm not saying the plaintiff would have an easy time or win, but I suppose they could have case.
  5. No one has suggested screwing anything into a tree EDIT: I see a point of confusion. I edited my post to clear it up.
  6. Better yet, use Camo Tape. Yep, read it again. I think it depends on the location. My cache is attached to a branch. The brown I use blends in great by coincidence, especially since you climb the tree a very short distance to find it, I'm only hiding it from muggles. No problems yet. That said, I'd use camo tape if I felt like it made sense and I didn't have an infinite supply of free black duct tape
  7. I'm assuming you mean Bison tubes? I would suggest using a cable-tie. Wish I had pictures, (Maybe I'll go get some if no-one else does) but... 1. I take: zip ties a strong magnet Duct tape (I get black duct tape free so I use that but camo or brown tape would probably help) A match safe A cheap metal door hinge plate from home depot Some strong outdoor adhesive 2. I adhesive AND tape the magnet to the match safe. 3. I paint everything (including the zip ties and plate) brown(or whatever) with krylon brown (or whatever color works) 4. Go to my cool location where a micro in a tree happens to work best 5. I attach the metal plate to the tree (EDIT: zip ties trough the holes in the door hing plate thingy) and put the magnet safe on the tree. I stole this method from someone on these forums and some who've found mine have mentioned they will steal it in turn. EDIT: I whipped together a quick fake version for visual adi (NOTE: This is not the cache. It's missing an o-ring and I didn't paint it or anything. This is just a quick example made up from the intended back up.
  8. No. Containers are replaceable, but the replacement should be done by the CO. Notice the ninja. Also notice the APE fiasco. This isn't an APE cache, it's a traditional. Different cache types. Apparently different rules. EDIT: Whoops. Sorry. Always thought a ninja meant you were saying something like you knew to hide or run right after it came out of your mouth
  9. I've never so much as drank, let alone tried pot, but my dad sure has. I grew up around the stuff, so maybe I'm a bit biased, but I'd treat the tent like any other and subtract the pot from the equation.
  10. The cache placement allowed you to discover a nice place. Fo the life of me, I can't identify the source of your angst. Maybe, just maybe, geocaching isn't just about the location. Nope its about grown adults seeking crappy children's toys too
  11. I doubt this helps, but in my line of work we deal with a lot of rigging and hanging of light and speakers. If one falls and kills someone, the company can definitely be held liable. However, if they can prove I KNEW it was dangerous and DID NOTHING to stop it. I can be held liable. At least as I understand it, I'm legally bound to either fix something dangerous to my customers or tell the authorities. I assume its something similar with Groundspeak. When I consider this (assuming It's been explained correctly to me for course) it makes complete sense to me that GS would draw a line in the sand and say "We just post the stuff. We don't try to determine if it's dangerous." If GS DID get mixed up in that sort of thing, it would be the equivalent of putting, "No murderers in here. GUARANTEED!" or "only honest business men in here." on the front of a phone book to my mind. By remaining a listing site that makes very few guarantees, it probably protects them from being accused of leadng cachers into dangerous situations. Think about all the release forms you have to sign before sky diving or whatever. GS doesn't wanna deal with that. It's just a listing site. Getting involved in saying some caches are dangerous would definitely open you up to some lawsuits I would assume in exactly the way AZcachemeister is saying. 12. My honest answer is that I don't think you should have a cache if you can't be bothered to read it's logs... however many it takes to get you there...
  13. I like to be taken somewhere I didn't know about.
  14. And, if they are like some of the Earthcaches out there, where I have to write a term paper in order to log them, they will go on my Ignore list.
  15. Why treat it differently to any other cache? If the container is gone you can replace it. Why give it it's own icon/souvenir and make a big deal out of a large ammo can than? It's not a traditional cache, it's an APE cache. They have their own rules. Their rules were made by Groundspeak. Apparently, having the original issued container IS what makes them ape caches. The way a stamp makes a letterbox a letterbox
  16. NERD ALERT: As a kid, I used to play dungeons and dragons. Or at least, try to get other kids to play. Because of this, I LOVE dice. I alwats want to buy them but have no good reason... but geocaching lets me have an excuse to buy polyhedral dice: Cheap Fun Geeky Somewhat novel People seem to be trading up from them in my caches because they are always gon and I tend to find more expensive swag in their place
  17. Honestly, you'll fee; ;le a jerk of you tell a reviewer and post an NA. Pn the other hand, we'' A:: LOOK like jerks of there ever is a problem. That said, not sure I'd have the guts to tattle... though I sorta' think it's the right way to go. What the CO said makes zero sense and the back doors of restaurants are often considered "high risk" by employers/employees who fear robbery or assault. At least it was when I was a teen in fast food. Though situation, but a bad CO for sure.
  18. Yet all these earth-caches that claim the earth is millions of years old (its not, its 6,000 years old) or bring up the subject of evolution (which has been debunked many times) aren't pushing an agenda?
  19. Of the two, I think you'll find the camo burlap bettersuits your needs. The camo netting is really for large scale applications, masking them from view over long distances. It does very little up close. Maybe add a few of these for depth? I think your end result is going to be an awesome cache! Great great great! Thanks! Now to look at the plants in the area... EDIt: It would be funny to have a seasonal change of camo! lol
  20. It would be funny, but might run up against this: I agree with this but - the first chance some self appointed spokes person for the "I choose to be offended" crowd get - they will come along and trash all the contents. oh please... When someone has a different opinion or emotional reaction than them, someone on the internet always feels comfortable reading their mind and accuses them of being a liar or pretending to feel what they feel. Might as well start accusing people of "not wanting" to enjoy boiled cabbage and wanting to be offended by racism, homophobia, being scared of spiders or whatever... It's MOST LIKELY involuntary, To assume the opposite is strange to me... Can't we just assume people genuinely have different life experiences and have different tolerances for things? It's one thing to think their hurt feelings are misplaced or unjustified, but to pretend they are CHOOSING to feel them for attention or whatever is just burying your head in the sand. It assumes the worst of people simply because you feel different.
  21. I think the favorite system works well enough. It just needs t be integrated into PQs now I suppose. I don't like negative feedback for caches, because not all caches are FOR all types of cachers. A silly hobby like this should be kept purely positive. The favorites system is still very new and will be improved. I don't think we need a second system to fix a problem very few cachers actually have. EDIT: I would like to add, again, that I almost never find lame caches and I can't imagine how anyone does it by accident. They are typically easy to spot and avoid searching for. I'm probably alone, but I wish I had MORE favorite points to distribute, because so many of the caches I fnd in my area make me very happy to find them. It's really just 1/20 that has me asking, "really? Hrm... weird" I suppose it's because I'm still fairly new and haven't burned through all the great hides yet?
  22. There's a cache a bit southeast of me,La Caza del Camaleon, that has evolved, over the years, to become a "Must Do" destination. The final is a chest like what you described, though a bit smaller, and containing only a single ammo can. It was placed in 2004, and time has taken its toll, but the chest is still a way kewl thing to find at day's end. Exactly what I'm thinking but a bit larger, like you'd said. If this were the case we'd probably drape something likethis or this (just random examples) over the cache with a few fake plants (I'm thinking plain brown vines) to accent it. Not sure if this is a foolish Idea. I found a large in Seattle just under a sheet of burlap and decided it was a cool idea, but I haven't considered every con I'm sure.
  23. Lots of good posts here. Apparently I need to google the term "gillie? or "Ghillie"? I was actually thinking of a cloth you'd just drape over the container, but you guys seem to prefer attaching it. Good stuff. I mostly juts want to hide the cache from muggles. It doesn't need to be d4 or anything. I don't think the trail gets much traffic at all, but I like to be careful. Awesome stuff, thanks. Will definitely post pics if we ever get it done. This is my philosophy as well. We have the location, and we think it will support a large. Now we're thinking about how the overall presentation will be... Thanks for the tip on silk plants. I was thinking it might be fun to find a large wooden treasure chest with ammo cans for actual protection.. I suppose it might get a little gross though... we were planning on treating it and stuff, but sill...
