  1. I found around 80 beforehand but hiding was my main interest in the hobby. They have been pretty well received. I did a lot of research on these forums and other places first though. Honestly, you don't have to find a hundred caches to know enough about the hobby.
  2. Found a scorpion IN a lidless cache I found once. I don't think he logs online, but he made me drop the cache and shout
  3. What does vegetarianism have to do with pest removal? Just curious. I'd rather not get into it, because its a long side conversation. I was trying to give my response some context. I'll just say that as a crybaby animal rights type, I wouldn't blame him for killing this particular animal even if I wouldn't. When I but a box of toys in the woods, I wouldn't define the bugs on it as pests myself. They happen to be a huge part of why I'm out there... but since this one is dangerous to humans in it's current spot I can see the logic in just killing it. I thought the subtext of the question had a "leave no trace" or "is this in the spirit of the hobby?" flavor and that the perspective of someone who would normally not kill the spider might be relevant. Not trying to moralize or lecture or anything. EDIT: I just saw your edit.I'm not sure I understand what you are getting at. It feels like I'm being trolled, but maybe I misunderstand? I was just trying to give my answer some context. If I asked a question about a cat and someone who hated cats or had 20 and maybe liked them too much answered, I would like that information up front. No, not trolling. Just making sure I knew where you were coming from. I suspect we don't share political views either.. A self-hating old-school ashamed Libertarian? prolly not. We're a dying breed.
  4. Mention spiders in your cache description. Include a photo and link to info on them. Don't tell me you expect that there's just one spider in the area. I might even consider disabling or archiving the cache (that's just me). Reason: Finding a black widow spider on my cache container would be about the coolest thing ever, and I don't want someone to come along and squish it. Or set up some praying mantis egg cases in the Spring. Either they'll help control the spider population, or the spiders will end up nice and fat and prolific there. Either way, it will be about the coolest thing ever. I was thinking that too! For some reason, I haven't seen one in years. I assume they live in TX, but I haven't seen one since Missouri. We had a few in our chicken coop growing up and they never much bothered me or the hens. I don't think I have the same amount of fear for them as others. I mostly just try to respect them from afar. Of course, this post will make for a nice addition to my nomination for the Darwin award when I'm killed by 20 black widows while geocaching next week
  5. I agree with others that I wouldn't stress about cheating, but I think some people are misunderstanding his question. He is talking about challenge caches where the date is relevant. I wouldn't stress about it, but I wouldn't say they aren't cheating or that dates don't matter in this case. Just that its none of my business if they don't want to have the full experience. They only cheat themselves.

  7. We're staunch vegetarians and wouldn't blame you for killing it. I'd probably try to find some goofy looking but safe way to move her, but its probably not really worth the risk.
  8. Now that I think of it, this bushwhacking problem is often just us not checking the terrain rating and keeping it in mind.
  9. It seems a little rude. I kind of view the logs as the CO's reward. Just because it doesn't benefit me doesn't mean I skip it.
  10. We do that all the time. We're just now getting better at saying, "You know, lets stay on this path a bit longer. .100 miles seems short when you are on a trail but its really far when bushwhacking with a crummy GPS under trees. We got 2 today that we would have bushwhacked for about a month ago. We even stopped ourselves. Both times the cache was less than 20 feet off trail. I'm considering making a rule for myself that I won't pursue a cache more than 20' off trail, because its not fun and really not that great for the locations themselves. We also usually forget gloves (always bring gloves in scorpion country, I try to remind myself) and misjudge how much light we have left... and forget flashlights. I also always forget to mark trailheads and the car on my GPS., which I think could save our lives one day.
  11. Wow, all good suggestions. I have my research cut out for me. For the curious there is a spot near my house with some amazing and elaborate graffiti in a city park. Its big, noticable, pretty impressive and is on something that otherwise would have been an ayesore in an otherwise nice park. I'm guessing it was commissioned, but I'll have to learn more about its origins. It also happens to be a place where you could do a pretty good hide, so I'de like to decorate a chache with a graffiti style font/art on the outside. the cache won't be visible at GZ so being shiny won't matter one way or another, but I do want something cheap so I can do a few at a time (for maintenance purposes I like to have a backup cache ready to roll) I think I'll try to do the Valspar first. I've only ever used Krylon Fusion for my caches (not that I've been doing it for very long) but I think I can handle the steps to do a real primer. If I have issues with that a sealant doesn't seem innapropriate for the location.
  12. So, all good answers. I guess I'm going to need to use an ammo box. That stinks because I'm not sure this is a great spot for an ammo box, but it might work. The cache itself won't be visible to the naked eye at GZ but once you find it I'd like it to be decorated in a a way that suits the area
  13. The ones I've seen claim to work on plastic, but are they appropriate for a cache? We have an idea for a GENIUS container/location combo but it requires some pretty specific artwork. It seems easiest to pull off with a paint marker, but I don't want to waste a bunch of time on something that will only last 6 months. Anyway, any info relating between these things and caches would be appreciated.
  14. As someone who is not a PM I think PMO cahces make complete sense. If I put a lot of really nice swag for the kiddies in my cache, dumped a lot of cash into the container or put it somewhere sensitive or perhaps dangerous I could see restricting the people going after it to people who are "serious" I know not all basic members are flakes (I'm certainly not a flake) but many of us are. If the only reason was to deal with less missing TBs it would still be valid
  15. I can't read this. I'm not being mean. I really cannot make sense of it. ?
  16. Its true in Austin, but "bad side of town" is maybe a strong word for SE Austin where I live. I'm trying to add more in this area anyway because there is some cool stuff here that doesn't get enough love.
  17. got my first one of these today. IT was a double post too. I hope he goes back and edits the one I didn't delete for him. I really enjoy reading the logs I get. That said, I think most people's logs are too short.
  18. I think people on these forums spend more time worrying what other people are doing and fretting over stuff than any other hobby forum I've ever seen. A poorly researched cache will suck no matter what. 1,000 finds won't change this. People should just have fun and take part in the game. I spent several months planning my hides. They aren't perfect, but I would argue they are better than the hides I have seen by a few more experienced cachers... but thats the thing: Different people like different caches. I love urban micros for example. I haven't hidden one yet, but I would like too. I'm sure it will annoy some people that it exists, but I don't like fake turds and wasp nests so what can you do?
  19. I pretty much never suggest a cache is gone if I don't find it. I just assume I can't find it. I might say, "I think this one may be gone" if its had a long series of finds followed by a TON of DNFs, but generally I assume I just failed.
  20. You could always do some sort of puzzle cache or multi involving the location, but without a physical container at said location. Maybe even a letterbox cache with directions starting at the post office. This might make the whole thing more intersting anyway and will probably save you some headaches. Doesn't hurt to ask first, but this might be a nice backup plan... P.s. I've driven through Cristmas on my way to mirror island I believe.
  21. He ended up taking the plunge and getting an Oregon 300 But this info is very useful to me, so thank you!
  22. I have a good friend who caches with an iPhone. He is very unhappy with his current level of accuracy with the phone. He called me frustrated today saying that he was ready to move up. He wants to see a noticable improvment in accuracy. He doesn't necessarily need the paperless functionality of some of the more advanced units because he'll have his phone on him anyway. Anyway, since I'm constantly on the internet and researching different things (and have been exploring upgrading from my nuvi) he asked me what I reccomended. I was scouring the forums when it occured to me to just start a thread and ask So, what do the experts think? Noticable more accurate than the iPhone, not too pricey and no need for paperless stuff. I'm assuming he'll want the compass feature to which he has grown accustomed to on the iphone. For example, how does the 60csx or the pn 40 compare? an eTrex? Side question: I have the hardest time parsing the eTrex line of GPSrs. Is there a trick to knowing which ones are newer and more functional and which ones arent? Its sort of weird. Thanks in advance. You'll be helping two people at once.
  23. Don't hold back. Tell us how you REALLY feel... Since you asked...Those little button things are evil. Even bison tubes should be banned. They take this hobby to a ridiculous level of bizzarro absurdity. Let's get back to the roots! Lifting lamp skirts in Wal-Mart parking lots is not geocaching. Anything smaller than a film can is nonsense. Don't get me started. I've found film cans under skirts. Hide quality =/= container quality I got no problems with nanos if they make sense and take me somehwere (I'm not ven picky about where really)
  24. wow! All sorts of great info in this thread!
