  1. I changed them back before I made the forum post. I noticed the change when I got an email that someone had found "Dakota Jim". Since I didn't have any caches named "Dakota Jim", I checked the cache using the web address in the email, and there it was, "Polution Free Energy" was now "Dakota Jim". Then I checked the names of the rest of my caches and one other had been changed to "Dakota Jim" ("200 Mile Long Lake"). dj Solved the problem: Found that if I have my Norton "Log In To Identify Theft" enabled, it will fill in some of the blanks with my name without me noticiing it. So if I were to edit a couple of my listings with this enabled, it was automatically inserting my name in the nickname box on the form.

  3. Two of my geocaches have had their names changed, but not by me. Each one had the title of the geocache changed from a descriptive name to my geocache name. Hence they went from 200 Mile Long Lake to Dakota Jim, and Polution Free Energy to Dakota Jim. So is this a computer bug at Groundspeak or has someone learned how to break into my page? For starters, I am changing my password. dj
  4. Actually I am originally from Wisconsin. But that was 30 years ago. Thought by using Dakota Jim I'd finally establish that I have moved to the Dakotas.
  5. I have three: one for geocaching (Vista HVx) and two on the saiboat: one fixed mounted Garmin 162 and one hand held GPSMAP76. All three have map capabilities. All three are heavily used for different purposes. Hard to take the fixed mounted inside the cabin of the sailboat . . . yet while sailing there is little use for a hand held. The handheld on the sailboat becomes my back up should my gps unit have problems.
  6. In GSAK, you can set it up to use unique icons for the different types of caches. For active caches, they all get the Treasure Chest, but for Archived caches, that are in my "Found" database, they get a little "Tombstone" icon. My owned caches get a little "camera" icon, since most of my caches have a view. Events get a little "mug" icon. Also using GSAK, you can use the "smart name" codes to have the waypoint name itself tell you a lot about the cache. If you use this code in the "Send to GPS" dialogue box: %smart=6 %con1%typ1%dif1%ter1 You get part of the Name, the Size of the container, the Type of cache (Traditional, Multi, Virtual, Puzzle), and the Difficulty and Terrain (based on a 10-point scale). Depending on what GPSr you have, you can get even more information in the Comment Field. Thanks for the responses. Obviously I have to get with it and start using Memory Map, GSAK and GPXSpinner. I have a Vista HCx 2.30, so the comment area is available. For maps I have Mapsource, topo and City Nav. I do not have a PDA and hence have not bothered to use pocket quiry much. I've been using Expert GPS to handle the wayspoints, however it doesn't pick up the disabled or archieved information. If you want to be kind to dumb animals you might spell it out a little more as to where I get these, etc. This might be helpful to others that read this thread. I do see GSAK and GPXSpinner at the Geocaching webpage: http://www.geocaching.com/waypoints/default.aspx Still looking for Memory Map. In the meanwhile, I'll be off doing some checking on the programs myself. Thanks again.
  7. I like to download the caches. However, after they are downloaded and uploaded to my map program, there is no way to tell the active caches from the archieved or disabled caches. Would it be possible to give the archieved or disabled caches a different icon rather than the closed box? When in the field with nothing more than the bare downloads, I would at least know which ones are active. Thanks.
  8. I have version 2.30 on my Vista HCx. Took the unit out today in the car. Odometer in both matched on the way to the donut shop. Stopped at the donut shop and bought 4 buttermilk donuts (okay, you don't care about that). Odometer in both car and gps had not changed. Stopped time recorded the proper time stopped. Continued on my drive and both odometers checked out. Oh, ate all 4 donuts, too. This suggests that there isn't a problem with the odometer, or with the stopped. Time. Plan to take it on a hike on a measured mile soon. Will report on that, too.
  9. Check the map/marine settings. If it is set to marine colors, water will show white on my Vista. It may be the same for yours, too. dj
  10. Just took a hike with HCx. I do think the reminder is a a problem as it showed up at least once after I recalibrated the unit. Suspect it needs a fix also. So 2 points for SergZak on this one.
  11. Can you do me a favor and test this out? With the unit on and the compass on, turn off the compass and then go to the compass page. Do you get the reminder message? With the compass off, turn off the unit. Power the unit back on and go to the compass page. Do you get the reminder message? As I'm seeing it, this works fine as long as the compass is on and you shut down the unit with the compass on. However, the message keeps popping up when the compass is turned off and you hit the compass page. On my unit, the reminder only is displayed when the compass is off when the unit is turned off and then on again. Not a problem for me. In fact it isn't a bad reminder to have considering I travel a lot and should recalibrate the internal compass in any new location anyhow. dj
  12. Garmin has just issued 2.30 for the Vista HCx that has fixed the WAAS problem. See other postings ont he Vista HCx on this webpage or go to downloader and update your Vista HCx. It also fixes a few other problems. Hi Dakota- I looked at the post on Vista HCx download v.2.30 by SergZak. Zak said the download did fix the WAAS problem, but created, in his opinion a more annoying problem- Quote from SergZak-I would stay clear of v2.30 and just stay at v2.20 just because of the annoyance of this new persistent 'calibrate compass' hint/feature. I don't know if I made it clear that it comes up even if you have the compass turned off. I wonder if anyone else has downloaded v.2.30 and has this same problem??? Same dilema- buy Vista HCx now-deal with WAAS problem, or download V.2.30 and have an annoying message about the compass OR wait and see if Garmin turns out an HCx that doesn't have problems???? Am I being too picky!!?? Obviously what annoys some people will not annoy others. SergZak identified "problem" doesn't really annoy me. In fact I think it may be an advantage. But then, everybody to their own poor taste. So far I have found that 2.30 is great. Fixes what bugged me. Of course that will not be the last update as anyone that has had a Garmin knows . . . we probably will see about several more updates in the next few months as Garmin identifies other problems. 14. Thanks for the post. I just updated my unit to 2.30 and it indeed does take care of the WAAS problem.
  15. Anyone to try this? Can we still read the temperature of the unit? Yep, you can still get the temperature of the unit through the sequence you describe. Neat, never tried it before. Garmin is aware of the freeze up problem as of 7/13. They had me ship my unit back on that day as they had not seen one in the shop, and immediately replaced mine with another that did not have this defect. The WAAS problem existed on both.
  16. I have a Vista HCx unit. The antenna is very sensative, getting my location in the basement of my house, and the internal processor is very fast. For the price I would buy the H version of any of the Garmin products now. Note that the Vista HCx also will take a 1 gig chip ($13 at GPS City) that will hold one heck of a lot of map data (not wayspoints, but this version already will take 1,000). I can get the entire City Nav maps on one chip, and then have other chips that have a combination of City Nav and Topo for a region, allowing me to switch from one to the other. One drawback is that WAAS is toggled off through some action and at the initial start up. Suspect Garmin will address this glitch in their next update.
  17. It does do that. I've got one and it pointed it right out. That site found one that I had and I deleted it. I was with a group a couple of years after I found a cache and so I logged it again not even realizing that I had already found it. It can happen. Ah ha: using your suggestions as well as Excel, I found the problem: a webcam cache (Pahupa'iki'i Maka GC3D6D) wasn't counted in "unique finds" but is counted in my total find count. The reason for this is that webcams photos are listed under "Webcam Photo Taken" and separately from the "Found It" list and therefore are not included in the "unique finds". I never would have figured this out without your suggestions. And I really appreciate the push to get me on the website http://www.itsnotaboutthenumbers.com Thanks again. dj
  18. So I worked myself through your suggestion. It is very interesting data. Thanks for putting me up to enrolling it. Anyhow the data did not help as it states: Type Total Unique Earthcache 4 4 Multi-cache 6 6 Traditional Cache 101 101 Unknown Cache 2 2 Virtual Cache 9 9 Webcam Cache 1 1 As you can see all the numbers match and equal 123. While a list of all my fines from My Account list My Geocaching Logs (Filtered by Log Type) 122 Results: While the number listed after my name is 123. At this point it would appear to be a web problem and not a log problem. Any other thoughts? dj It does do that. I've got one and it pointed it right out. That site found one that I had and I deleted it. I was with a group a couple of years after I found a cache and so I logged it again not even realizing that I had already found it. It can happen.
  19. Thanks for that explanation but I haven't attended any events. Its caused by some other similar thing, however.
  20. Thanks for the responses. I took my entire set of logs and copy/paste to Excel. Did a sort and found that there wre no duplicates. Instead it appears that somehow they have counted all my finds, but when I download unique finds, 1 is missing. No big deal. At this point I would assume it is a website glitch. Thanks again. It does do that. I've got one and it pointed it right out.
  21. Is there a way to check and see where I logged the same cache twice, thus resulting in more finds than unique finds? No big deal, but would like to keep the number the same. To explain further, my name comes up with the number of finds I have. If I go to my account and ask it to list all my finds, it will provide a list and a number. That list and number are only for the unique finds and is less than my actual finds. So obviously I logged the same cache as a find twice. so is there an easy way to find the cache where I have doubled up. If so, I will edit my second log as a note, rather than a find. Thanks.
  22. Actually they have heard about the freezing problem as of Friday, July 13th. They had not seen one in their shop and asked that I ship mine back to them (serial number 16D00432). In turn they sent me a replacement with a SN over 1000 that works fine that I received on the 20th. The 432 unit had to have both the 1 gig chip and the batteries removed before it would work. Then to get the chip to work, I put the batteries in, fired the unit up and then put the chip in. All worked fine until I turned it off. Then I had to do the same routine again. At that time the said they had a similar complaint from one person who sent the unit back to the supplier (store) so they had not seen a defective unit yet. Apparently this is a glitch on a few units. New one works great with no defects. Not seeing WAAS being turned off either. Love the unit.
  23. I have had my Vista HVx for about a week. Its really great and the antenna is a definite plus over the Vx version. The built in maps will get you from town to town, but are not all that effective getting you to a particular point in town. The street maps are really worth it. I have City Navigator on mine (Cost about $114) which is great. It will give you detailed turning directions from any location in any town in US and Canada to any other location. It comes on a chip or on a DVD. If you decide to use the DVD you have the advantage of loading City Nav and some Topo maps on the same chip for the same area (which I have done). 1 Gig chips run about $13 at GPSCity and probably many other places. I can get the entire City Nav for US and Canada on one chip. Loading time is about 2 hours. I also have divided the rest of the US up into 4 quadrants with each having City Nav and the Old Garmin Topo maps. Careful as the City Nav software is locked to one GPS and cannot be used on a second. Metro is also a street program, less expensive, and not locked to any GPS. However it tends to drop you at the nearest highway intersection and draw a straight line from their to your house or whatever. The new Navigation Programs are going to be great. I have yet to try any except on the Garmin Web Page. National Parks only work in National Parks and not elsewhere. Hence unless you are really going to be exploring some, they probably have limited value. The new TOPO chips come in small areas. I'll probably be upgrading to those sometime in the next year, but at the moment cannot provide any info. One small point to remember: if you have a Street map and a topo map on your Vista, you will not see the topo map unless you a "hide" of the street maps ("map setup - information" will list all the maps on your Vista and will allow you to hide or show the various maps). Hide does not erase them, but puts them in the background letting one does not have the same priority be shown. The pecking order in City Maps, then topo maps, then the basic map. As near as I can tell, the marine waypoints will always show through. Let me know if I can be of any more help. Feel free to email me directly through the web. Dakota Jim
  24. Perhaps the question should really be: How old is the average Geocacher on the inside? The outside tends to age, but many of us stay the same age on the inside . . . . while I look 73 on the outside, my optomitrist said my eyes look I am 12 years old on the inside. So, I am guessing I never got older than 12 on the inside.
