  1. quote: FullOn: I care what you think! Thanks, Martin, I need a little positive affirmation every now and then. Kevin, I had, of course, failed to mention your K&S signature monkeys in my original post. Terribly sorry . I had one I found in GeoJeff's Raging View cache, but I re-released him somewhere else. The wife wouldn't let me keep another monkey in the house! I'm bad enough about flinging crap around the house. Still toying with the geocoins idea. I'm going to have to run by Michael's & see what they have. OK - one more idea rolling around my noggin... Is there any interest in a Southern California centric geocaching website? I've seen the Chitown pages and MI & WI sites along with a few others. They seem to be kind of a nice place to discuss local issues and such. Just wondering...? Nobody cares what I think.
  2. Martin- Most of the stuff I have traded comes from the Dollar Store and Big Lots. But my philosophy is starting to change on the subject. I've always admired the little polished agates with eyes and a nice custom card that John & Donna leave in the caches they find, so I'm trying to come up with something that is cheap, homemade, small, personalized and unique. There is a thread going about homemade geocoins. I'm thinking about trying these out. I also like the cards that Uneakone and Happy1 leave in caches. Anyone seen anything else they though was cool? Nobody cares what I think.
  3. quote:Crap! I've been meaning to place a BRIDGE TO NOWHERE CACHE for a year now... I saw an article on the Bridge to Nowhere in the Times early last year and thought it would be a great place for a cache. Of course then summer hit and I didn't want to hike in temps over the century mark, then I got beat to it. Still sounds like a fun hike. I'm seriously thinking about going for Baldy. Especially if the weather stays nice and cool and we don't get much snow up there. Apparently you can take the ski lift to the top and then hike across the ridge to the summit. It's supposed to be less than a 10 mile round trip that way. One of these days… Nobody cares what I think.
  4. OK, fine... Throw down the gauntlet. I've been looking over this one for awhile. The one reason I've been avoiding this one is because my mountain bike riding skills are sorely lacking and 12 miles on a bike didn't sound like much fun to struggle through. Now if I could ride a motorcycle to it... That would be a different story The two that I'd really like to do are The Bridge to Nowhere and The Bald Italian.
  5. I've been busy thinking up ways to avoid work and geocache more with only marginal success . Besides that, I've been taking care of my daughter (17 months) and my wife (6 months pregnant). So I've kind of had my hands full. As far as anything geocaching related… I've been running out of caches that I can hit on my lunch hour (more like 2 hours now). The only caches I have left within a quick drive of my work in Chino Hills are in Chino Hills State Park, but I can't get to them fast enough on foot or bike to be able to grab them at lunch. I think I'm going to have to change jobs so I can get a new geocaching area! Does anyone else out there do the majority of their caching during the week? "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  6. El Oso, I just recently followed the same path you're on (bought the 6400's from Costco, got my GMRS license, decided to look into ham radio). Well, I decided to try the Tech test for ham and passed it with no problems. I'm currently shopping for my first radio (probably go with the Yaesu VX-5R - nice tri-bander they just dropped the price on - $205.00). IMHO, getting the tech license is certainly worth it if you have any interest in Ham. It's really easy to pass and it opens up many possiblities. Good luck! "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  7. But fortunately there's more of us nerds than truly cool people! "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  8. What in the world were you doing that caused you to be apprehended while looking for the cache? Were you looking on private property? Was it posted? "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  9. Just got my Cheaper Than Dirt dot com catalog yesterday and noticed they have 6 ammo cans (30 cal I think) for under 20 bucks. Not a bad deal, and a hell of a lot easier to find than the little decon canisters! "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  10. Husqui, thanks for checking with them about the new (old) policy. Please keep us posted. Has anyone been able to run by and check on an alternative site there? I'm assuming there has to be more than one place to have a picnic around there. "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  11. Thanks for making the call Husqui. Hopefully someone can get over there this weekend and check it out. I'll be gone Fri-Sun otherwise I'd do it. "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  12. Carbon Canyon was OK, but I really don't like the idea of making people pay to come. Even though it's only 4 bucks the idea of having to pay to park just rubs me the wrong way. As was mentioned before, Central Park has several things going for it... The cafe there is very good. I had a couple of breakfasts in there. Also, with the caches nearby, the frisbee golf course and the dog park, it's got a bit of everything that people were looking for. As far as the $200.00 reservation, I'd much rather take our chances the day of than shell out that kind of cash for the facility. Anyone want to volunteer to scope it out down there? "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  13. OK. I'm leaning towards Central Park in Huntington Beach. Here's a link. As far as the date goes, Saturday March 22 is fine by me. Even though I lived in HB for 6 years, I never went to Central Park, so if anyone can fill me in on picnic facilities, that would be great. According to park rules, dogs must be on a leash at all times, but there is a free play dog park in Central Park for them to run. There is also a frisbee golf course there (anybody get that one on the locationless yet?) It also seems to be a fairly cache rich area. Feedback? "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  14. Anyone have any thoughts on Carbon Canyon Regional Park? Doga are allowed, but must be on a leash. There is a fee to enter the park (4 bucks, I think, on the weekends). Lots of caches there, if you haven't found them all already and we could certainly get a few more out there before the picnic. I'd love to have it somewhere you could get in some geocaching that didn't charge and was fairly centraly located, though. Anyone know of any parks/picnic areas in the Brea/Fullerton area to Whittier/Pico Rivera area. There is the Whittier Narrows area, but I'm not sure what the crowds are like on the weekends. Just trying to find someplace that everyone in the Southern California area can get to easily. "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  15. Which Huntington Park do you mean? "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  16. A place to bring the muts is OK by me. Last year's picnic was held at Irvine Regional Park. Nice location, but a little crowded on the weekends, plus you have to pay to get in. Anyone know of some "free" park somewhere. As far as the date goes... do we want to shoot for the 22nd? "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  17. March sounds good to me. We've got 5 Saturdays in March: 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. Anyone have any conflicts/opinions about these dates? "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  18. Well, Lars and I with a lot of help from a whole bunch of other people kind of threw the last OC picnic together (read-named the time and place and then left the rest of it up to other people!) Seems like we've got quite a few new faces around here so it may be time for another one. Hopefully it won't be quite as cold as last year!!!! "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  19. The Short and Winding Road Cache is an ammo box that might hold it. If I remember right, it's a 30 caliber ammo box. Fairly easy find and lots of visitors also. "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  20. Again, as others have said, use the numbers as a guide. I've done most of the caches in the Corona area and if you need some suggestions, just drop me an email. Have fun! "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  21. I've put out nine caches and never had any trouble getting any approved. Maybe you could site some examples of the problems you've had. "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  22. 290 or so finds and it works for me every time. A bit slow perhaps (20 seconds per request over a T1 ine) but it always seems to work. I'm not sure what would cause it to be unstable for some and fine for others. "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  23. I used to check out my map all the time too, waiting for the day it would be filled... I've got a lot more caches to find. 290 so far isn't bad though! "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
  24. Believe me, I'm not what you would call a "conservative", but I think the overmanagement of our forests, especially the local ones, is becoming a real problem. I've certainly got the feeling that there is very much a "them and us" type of feeling from the rangers I've run into. I'm sure that in their jobs they see everyday the impact of those that don't care about our natural resources cause, but closures like this, and closures of specific areas for reasons that are never made public, really only keep out those that use the forest responsibly. Especially with a problem like this. We've had dry years before, but I can never remember them shutting down the forest. Its really a shame.
  25. Refund?!?! Good luck. They're not issuing refunds to hunters with deer tags for the areas. In fact they are CHARGING them a processing fee for getting a deer tag for an area that isn't closed. Besides, look what happened the last time the Fed issued a "refund". "I thought you said this was a quick find!" - My wife
