  1. Refugees are no threat at all, and if you go looking for the caches that you mention (Olympian Gods, a great cache, congratulations for solving! and the other caches in that area) you are probably not going to meet any. Even if you do, they pose no more "threat" than ordinary muggles. We hope you have a great time here in Athens!
  3. Thank you for that very useful piece of information! I find the new search system utterly useless! The old Advanced Search is what I need. You made my day with that advice! I hope it remains running for ever...
Wherigo.com/cartridge/details.aspx?CGUID=4b3fa42a-26af-4120-97ce-4333dd34db04 .
  6. I totally agree with Matmonai, especially about the point of being nice and including English even if it not a requirement. And also about enjoying our favorite game as much as possible. Here is our reply to the reviewer, with thanks for his time and cooperation in resolving this issue and, as someone said, going back to our regularly scheduled program Dear Matmonai, Thank you for publishing our cache, and also thank you for taking the time to write your lengthy message. We too are happy that this misunderstanding has been resolved and put behind us. Although, as you mention, both the consensus and the GS opinion came down to allowing caches with no text in English at all, we will continue to include English text with most of our cache descriptions, as we have done in the past. There are caches, like the one just published, that do not really need any information (in either Greek or English) other than the hint to be found. But for the majority of caches, I can only agree that including both English and Greek is the nice thing to do, especially for caches, placed by both myself and others, near sites of historical / archaeological / natural interest. For caches such as these, we have and will continue to include not only the obvious information about the cache, but also about the site itself, taking geocaching beyond a mere hide-and-seek game. Having put this misunderstanding aside, I too hope that there are no ill feelings on either side. In fact, I appreciate your volunteering your time to the game, and hope for a friendly cooperation, promoting (by placing / reviewing caches respectively) our favorite hobby/pastime. Take care and thank you, George & Christina
  7. We might do that, or go to Groundspeak with the cache unpublished (and the reviewer logs still in place) for their review.
  8. Thank you Lil Devil This is the link given on the Guidelines page. Choose category 9.
  9. I am the player whose cache got rejected. Now, I have published more than 30 caches, and I have always included en english description -- some times, only english. The cache in question is a run-of-the mill micro in an urban forest; I intend for it to be easily findable, and the hint is in english, providing for, I hope, an almost immediate find, even without an english description. The greek description itself only says that the cache is placed near a water tap in the park, and that the park is a great place to walk, bike etc. Having provided this information, I went ahead and submitted the cache with just the greek description, planning to go back after publication and include english, and perhaps put some more stuff about the park in both languages. I thought nothing of it, I have sought and found caches with descriptions only in french, german, flemish, italian and turkish. Caches with descriptions only in russian, japanese etc are also around. Instead, this has turned into a major issue, with the reviewer refusing to publish the cache because of the lack of english description. First, because s/he could not understand it, and when I sent a translation as a reviewer note, because "the game is international". So according to the reviewer, it is OK for the french, germans, belgians, italians, turks and swedes to have caches just in their language -- but not for greeks. As I said, I prefer for cache descriptions to include english, and might even be in favor of such a requirement by Groundspeak. But in this case, the review appears to have made up an arbitrary rule and enforcing it. This is, well, arbitrary, and also discriminatory for no good reason. Most of the readers here have suggested that I take this up with GS. Who do I contact for this?
  14. I was wondering too about those two caches, both in lovely places. So they are both gone, you say? A pity. But more is the pity about the forests. I used to hike in those areas sometimes Better if 100 caches were lost and the forest was left there. Krima, krima...
  15. I agree with you Yanni, this is not an internet pastime! But if you do all the work to find 5-10 waypoints, it's plenty of outdoors work. And it's nice to have a way to check if you've done that work correctly before following what you believe to be the right coordinates. The site I proposed just tells you if you have the right coordinates, it doesn't give them to you if you don't have them. It's a way for the cache owner to make things a bit easier for you, if s/he decides to do so. Of course a cache owner may NOT want to make things easier for you -- that's part of the game too!
  16. To see how it works, take a look at my new puzzle cache GCXEZG, which has a link to this site.
  17. Hello all! I just found a useful site, www.geochecker.com . This is vary useful if you place difficult multi-caches or puzzle caches. What you do as a cache owner, you input your coordinates into the site, along with the waypoint (GCXXXX). As a cache seeker, you will try solving the cache, and then you can input the waypoint and the coordinates you have found into the site, and it will tell you if you have the correct ccordinates. I think it is useful, since some of us (onomata den leme ) place some very hard caches that you are not sure if you have the right coordinates in the end. Ta leme!
  18. A DNF is also appropriate (and welcome by others) in cases where you could not get to a cache site because of things like snow. If I see a DNF like that, I will either attempt the cache when the snows have melted, or will pack snow gear along. In either case the DNF is a welcome piece of information. Another example, in oiur area a couple of caches are within an area (a mountaintop) blocked off by the police for a couple of days. I am grateful to the geocacher who attemted the cache, got turned back, and then posted his DNF to let us know not to attempt the cache for a few days.
  19. Εγω εχω Netscape 7.2 και δεν εχω προβλημα κατεβασματος waypoints.

  22. No drivers needed. Using a plain serial port is sufficient (setting the correct baud rate etc). Using a USB-serial cable is OK most of the time - my laptop talks to the GPS (GSAK, Ozi, etc.) however it won't perform a firmware update over the USB-serial, I had to go to a computer with a real RS232 port to do that.
  23. Hmmm... not according to WGS84... exactly which datum are you referring to?
  24. I have just updated my 315. First I tried doing it from my laptop, using a USB-serial adapter and Magellan's factory cable. No luck, it found the GPS but could not proceed to updating it. Then I tried it from a computer with a native RS232 port and it worked. Note that everything else (Oziexplorer, GSAK) work with the USB adapter just fine, it's just the update that wouldn't work.
  25. Another question: I am going to be looking for a cache near high voltage power lines. Most probably I will need to triangulate, and a GPSr's direction arrow is not much use there, this is best done using a magnetic compass. Will that have a problem with the lines overhead?
