I've noticed on new caches that the approver will log the word "published" with a green circle icon. The log dosn't always correspond to the day the cache said it was hidden. I think I know why, but what is the reasoning. Approvers? Here is an example Just curious? Salvelinus

I wouldn't say a word. I think the fun is to see who does find it and not worry about who would "chicken out". Not every cache needs to be spoon fed. Salvelinus

Yes, I found a cache like that. It was this now archived cache. I actually watched a hornet crawling on the thing so I was convinced it was a real one! After several tries, I finally figured it out, but it was a dead ringer for the real thing. The cache was made with a wire basket and had a hing. Not sure what was wrapped around it to make it look so realistic but you may want to contact this active geocacher who was there when the hider made it. btw...the hider of this cache is no longer an active geocacher so you may not be able to contact. Ever Had A Cache Log Make Your Day???
Salvelinus replied to Snoogans's topic in General geocaching topics
I have been quite inspired by all the logs on my Serenity Cache. Even the DNF's and the notes have been positive. I've even received many personal e-mails about this cache. Not a surprise though. Out of all the places geocaching has taken me...this hike is still the most special. Salvelinus -
How Challenging Are Your Hides?

Interesting topic. Reminds me of a cache log I read the other day from the very first cache I placed: July 23 by ROCKY (374 found) Well Salvelinus I thought it was about time I found one of your caches. I have been caching since April of 01 and have admired your logs, well thought out posts on the forums and creative hides. Mrs. Rocky and I have taken several long weekend caching trips to Pennsylvania over the past several years. On this trip your cache was our centerpiece of the many we lined up to do and we were not disappointed. What a picture perfect day we had for caching. The heat and humidity finally broke making it very enjoyable. We traveled mountain and forest roads 30 miles to the cache location. Your directions and description had us sure we were starting from the right place, especially what you wrote about the weather rock. We followed the path less traveled right at the stream edge. What a great feeling to be that far in and have the place to our selves. We do some hiking in the Adirondack Mountains and this area certainly has that feel to it. From reading the logs I thought it would be a more difficult find, we had it in about 5 minutes. You can imagine my surprise to see we were the 3rd ones to log in that day. You can put whatever number you want on it. But when I read a log like that...I know I've given somebody something back. Salvelinus

I'll give ya 95%, since I KNOW how much you give back. I'm reserving the other 5% until I finally get the chance to find one of your caches! Salvelinus

How Challenging Are Your Hides?
Salvelinus replied to dingermcduff's topic in General geocaching topics
A friend of mine has been searching through all of Pennsylvania's 4100+ plus cache listings and is bookmarking the ones she wants to do. One of her criteria are caches with a 3 star or higher terrain rating. So far she has found about 100 that have met that criteria out of about 800 caches she has reviewed. From what she looked at so far...the average for PA seems to be below 3 stars for terrain. My cache hides tend to reflect what type of cache I would llike to find. Most terrain ratings for my caches are 3 stars or better. My caches are easy to find once you get there because the adventure of getting there is what I focus on. You can bet there will be water nearby, a great vista, or some local history to explore. You won't find any of mine in a parking lot or anyplace else where you have to pretend your doing something else. Salvelinus -
Has Anyone Heard Anything About
Salvelinus replied to treasure_hunter's topic in General geocaching topics
I've done that twice before with approver consent. I've also adopted 2 others that way. If its not being cared for or properly permitted and nobody will adopt it, whether or not its causing problems or not...it should be taken out. Caches cross listed here and on other sites are so few and far between that leaving it out "just incase" can be ignored IMO. Salvelinus edit: Added thought -
Need Input Of The "community" About A Virtual
Salvelinus replied to fluffy&itchy's topic in General geocaching topics
Nope...this is geocaching where, by defination of a cache, you need a container. I hope Groundspeak holds its ground so that "visiting America's most popular monuments to collect another smiley face" won't start happening again. I've visited most of them several times. Why is it so important that you make them part of this game which is something totally different. There are other sites that list points of interests like this. I'm sure someone can link you to one of them. Salvelinus -
Ummmm...No. I would like to think hiders can be more clever than that and still have their cache handicap accessible. Without even thinking much on it, I think you could find the nearest local historical point of interest, which are usually handicapped accessible already, and hide your magnetic thingy around there. Gotta be a better experience than hanging around a dirty old parking lot. Salvelinus

Why We Should Be Nice To Muggles
Salvelinus replied to deimos444's topic in General geocaching topics
Not me. I was caching before someone decided to steal that term from those famous witch stories. Salvelinus -
That's strange...I've been caching about two years longer than you and I haven't "evolved" to a point where getting a smily face is more important than having fun checking out what's in the cache.

Back in the "good old days" it use to be about both. Having a great adventure, finding neat things, and trading equally or better use to be some of the most important aspects of geocaching. I'm a late comer to this thread, and was amazed at the amount of scarcasm the OP had to deal with. I guess now I'm seeing why its so hard to find a well conceived cache with decent trade items anymore. If you desire a cache with adventure and want to trade decent items your ridiculed. What gives? Salvelinus

Thats good...the way the post closed with her name, made it look like you were her. My bad.

If that is who you are, then you have more power to find out a positive answer to the geocaching on SGL issue than any of us. Why then debate the merits of Growing Greener (which has nothing to do with geocaching) with me? I do not do budgeting or have any power in consideration of funding sources for any agency. What I read about the bill is how much I know. Obviously you have issues with how growing greener works. Your points may be valid, but this thread is an inappropriate place to debate them. My only point with bringing up how the PGC is funded is to show that hunters pay MOST of their bills and thus have priority use on their lands. With or without Growing Greener that won't change. This quote needs to be re-read since it hits it right on the head. As an employee with the PA Fish and Boat Commission, this IS the thinking of the PGC and PFBC regarding their lands and secondary uses of it. Salvelinus

Mostly my comments were directed toward the phone number that was posted. It's not uncommon for someone to read this stuff, take it the wrong way, get all riled up, and call someone ranting and raving. That would be very bad. You can organize a meet with them whenever you want. I'm just saying the timing may be bad right now for a positive outcome. Last I heard, our approvers are still approving caches on SGL's. That's all I really need to know. Until they hear differently or until the situation spreads to other regions, I say let it lie. Salvelinus

I don't know what good it will do, but I think it's about time to challenge this statement. Well, your getting OT but my statement still holds true for both agencies you mention. I guess I should of said "license fees, excise taxes from resource users, and alternative funding sources" instead of just license fees. I was hoping not to confuse everybody. The fact remains that neither the Fish and Boat Commission or the Game Commission are funded from taxpayers dollars. However, DCNR, PADOT, DEP, etc...are funded from tax dollars. Growing Greener money is not money generated from the general public. It is a fund largly created by increased tipping fees from trash haulers and increased fines from industrial polluters. It is essentially mitigation funding paid for by those that do environmental wrongdoings. In fact, since so many Pennsylvania landfills are being used by out of state trash haulers, particularily NJ and MD, a good portion of the fund is not being paid by persons that reside in Pennsylvania. DEP, DCNR, PFBC, PGC and any organization who applies may be eligible for Growing Greener funding and/or bonds issued on it. You are correct that when you buy ammo and guns for target practice, you are supporting the funding required by the Pittman act, some of which goes to the PGC. However, many gamelands have target ranges which allow you to enjoy that activity on gamelands as well. So they are offering you a service from the dollars they received from your guns and ammo excise tax. Its not important to debate why agencies are funded the way they are. However, its important to know something about it because it could influence how issues are given priority. Salvelinus

Everyone needs to calm down and remember that the PGC has no "official" policy. You also need to remember that the 3 pulled caches were all located within the jurisdiction of one regional office. No other caches have been removed outside of this regional office. Remember too that our State approver has had discussions with them and is still approving caches on gamelands. Also, keep in mind that gamelands are not supported by tax dollars. They are supported by license dollars from hunters. For that, hunters needs and desires will, and should, always be given top priority on these lands. It will do us little good as secondary users of these lands to make demands from the PGC as if it is our right to do so. We are seen as guest there, not primary users. Bottom line is to show some tact. Please do not call anyone in the PGC and start complaining about this. Overreacting to a bunch of conflicting statements will just make you look stupid in the long run. Lets wait until something here is more concrete before we do anything, if anything. Knowing the issues this agency is facing right now...if we push a geocaching policy on them, we probably would lose a lot. Eventually, our positive experience with DCNR will pay off here, but the timing right now is bad. As an employee with their sister agency, trust me on that one. For our NE cachers: Keep us posted on what happens. You may want to post your experiences HERE as well. Maybe you should keep your caches out of gamelands for awhile and use DCNR State Parks and Forest instead. Just an idea. Savelinus Salvelinus

I hope many don't disagree with that or things have really gone downhill. If you don't sign the book, you haven't found anything to claim a find on. There are almost no exceptions to this. However, the encased in ice scenario may be one. But, you could always return when it thaws out and sign then. Salvelinus

Approved Commercial Caches - What?
Salvelinus replied to Sparrowhawk's topic in General geocaching topics
So...a cache at a geocachers favorite bar, hidden with permission of the bar owner is ok as long as no purchase or entry fee is required? This one for example Salvelinus -
Approved Commercial Caches - What?
Salvelinus replied to Sparrowhawk's topic in General geocaching topics
The point is not what you do there when the cache brings you to a commercial business, its the fact that it brought you there in the first place. We had a local cache pulled for commercial violations. It was at a upscale bar/restaurant, and you had to only ask for the cache it to get it. No requirement to buy anything. All you had to do was visit the business and ask for the cache. I assume this one would be ok with you too? Here is the cache I mention Salvelinus -
HERE is a link to a users profile that has 12 of them in a series. and HERE is the 69th cache in a series of caches hid around Starbucks Shops and plazas and HERE is another series of Wal Mart themed caches. The cacher is inactive but many of these in this series have been adopted. If you would also like links to several series of turnpike and Interstate rest stop caches, all hidden similar to the above, I can provide those as well. Salvelinus
