  1. If a Boy Scout TB offends cachers ...this one will do the same, or worse. I suggest letting it go.
  2. Wow! It gets hard to find a cache where you can trade anymore let alone debate about what to put in it. McToys are fine as long as they haven't been used. Kids go for them and I even give them a quick look over. Besides, they are "old school" and I'm all for that! Salvelinus
  3. I saw them just fine. I also saw the rolleyes, lol, smirk and "dark" smiley too. The OP is new, cut him some slack and be glad he's participating. Salvelinus
  4. Think of it as demerits given out by the forum moderators for bad behavoir. If you get to many, you have to shut up and sit in the corner for awhile. Salvelinus
  5. Thanks for the heads up Codeman! Some don't realize what a relatively remote area you live in and how few cachers live around you. I for one often miss new caches up your way unless I'm really looking for them. Now I have a reason to take my favorite ride across the Ridge Road again! I was up your way earlier this fall and found an excellent spot to place a cache. I've been looking for a local who may be interested in doing something there. Drop me an e-mail if your interested. Thanks again. Salvelinus
  6. I heard the Steelers are changing their uniforms to black and white next year. Sorry Lep and all my (now former) cache friends from out yonder! Couldn't resist. How soon til we see the Steelers tribute cache? Just give my Raiders your offensive coordinator and I'll shut up. Salvelinus
  7. Isn't the bigger problem that of bugs being kept and not moved, rather than lost to a cache that goes missing or gets stolen? The best way to make a location visable to most "real" cachers is to make it Members Only. It has worked for me when I had some problems with non-cachers. However, someone could still stumble upon it. Salvelinus
  8. Based on the guidelines there may be grounds for archival. Just forward the info to Keystone and let him deal with it. Salvelinus
  9. It's a game where the only prize is the satisfaction you create for yourself. I'm beginning to wonder about this. I've seen, not only an explosion of "kudos" threads in regional forums, but events held in honor of high number finders, events held in honor of high finders in general, and nice prizes given for high numbers of finds. To each their own I guess, since none of that is my style. But maybe some are actually striving for this? Why else would you log an event 9 times to get credit for all 9 of the temporary caches someone hid for the event. Salvelinus
  10. Send me a pvt email when you are willing to see the evidence. Yeah they cache daily, if you want to call that dedicated...fine. But there is a fair amout of "claiming things that aren't true" going on as well. Most of us have lost respect long ago. Salvelinus
  11. Huh? So are you saying GC.com is more tailored to park and grab hiders?
  12. I disagree. I think they should only be made available to people who cache. I've had two stolen off of public land when a nearby cabin leasee (not owner) decided they didn't like them being there. I made them MOC's and they have gone untouched since. Salvelinus
  13. Hey! I just passed my 4th year. Seen lots of changes. I'm waiting for the revolution that will bring the "long, interesting hike in the woods for a cache" back in vogue. Salvelinus
  14. Wasn't he the photographer in Alaska who assumed two juvenile grizzlies were just happily playing just before they turned on him? Salvelinus
  15. I agree...except on your assumption that people are trapping for meat. I'm sure some do, but in fact animals are mostly trapped for their fur. Bullet holes and arrowhead holes in the hides will bring down its price. Besides, nobody wants to eat most of the animals (Beaver, Mink, Muskrat and Fox) targeted by trappers. So it may not be fair to say that a trapper is a "lazy hunter"
  16. It is exactly that exclusive ability (the ability to reason and communicate verbally) which make humans think that animals are experiencing the same emotions and feeling as humans. You assume because you feel anxious, fear, etc... then animals must. That assumption is totally emotion based and not factual. You will not find ANYTHING in SCIENTIFIC research that says so. I would expect a vetenarian or zookeeper to think as you do since they only deal with animals taken from their natural environment and forced to adjust to a human world (some would even call that cruel). But a trained biologist and researcher, such as myself, who makes it a career to study animal populations and behavoirs in their natural environment would not agree with you. You may have the last word since we are off topic. Salvelinus
  17. Exactly why most of mine are. It works too! Frankly, I wish this site would require membership. Salvelinus
  18. Well, when was the last time an animal told you it was feeling anxious? How else would you know? With all due respect, you can believe that animals can feel anything at all, but it is biologically impossible to know what an animal thinks or feels...if they even do! The best science can do is describe their responses to a particular stimulus. And putting human characteristics on those responses is improper to truly understanding animal behavoir. For example: It is widly thought that when your dog jumps up on you and licks your face when you come home it is "happy" to see you. In researching dog evolution, that exact same behavoir has been seen in wild dogs from Africa. They exhibit the same behavoir when others in the pack have returned from the hunt. It is now widly believe that the excited jumping and licking of the face causes the dogs who just hunted to regurgitate some of their recently consumed food for the others who remained behind, especially the pups, to eat. Gross huh? For all of your worries about traps and your dog. You have 100 times more to fear about your dogs safety while it is riding in your car to and from caches with you than you do with traps.
  19. Anthropomorphism is a dangerous thing.
  20. I would contact the nearest trash transfer station where you plan on disposing of everthing and follow their advice. Sometimes they collect and hold them for tire recyclers, other times they require you to get them to a tire recycler. It varies depending on where you are. Salvelinus
  21. I would suggest asking your question in the geocoin discussion section of the forums.
  22. I just found out, via my watchlist, about a bogus account that is currently logging bogus finds. As I write this... the account logged caches in Alabama, Alaska, and Afganistan and Antarctica...all the same day! I sent an email to Groundspeak, but I was hoping to see a faster closing of this account if I brought it to attention here as well. http://www.geocaching.com/profile/Default....29-1c62e392fc02 Salvelinus
  23. No...it is totally wrong to damage or alter anothers cache under normal circumstances. However, accidents do happen. In the old days, around here, caches like what you describe were more popular than they are today. One of the big problems with them is that they use to freeze in the winter and swell during hot weather and the caps would be impossible to open. When I first started caching, I always carried a pipe wrench in my backpack! Another issue with that type of container is it possibly being mistaken for a pipe bomb. There are numerous examples where this has happened. Salvelinus
  24. I know what your saying, I also do not like doing the log only cache, but I don't think the approvers should/would start correcting things. They already have way to many other things to do. I don't sort for micros based on container size anymore. Instead I read the cache page and if it says something like:"bring your own writing impliment", I immediatly bookmark it to my ignore list. Slower, but more effective. Salvelinus
  25. Any of you old timers remember this famous crash? This one is on my "to do" list. Salvelinus
