  1. The official 'gun experts' would have to give the statistics/technique advice on the 'bear' issue - perhaps in a seperate "self-defense" thread so other's could learn? I'm not recommending shooting (bears, or others) - there are many considerations to it, and if you miss - dang, you've got an extremely strong, agile angry animal coming at you VERY quickly - same w/a 'whacko' human. I was just referring to yes, guns & all forms of defense can be effective tools when needed and correctly used - right technique/time/place - depending on the individual's abilities and needs.... bear story is off-topic... a rogue bear, transplanted to our neighborhood, aggressive at humans..... edited: my (holds water back) word was replaced w/odd word, replaced w/dang....
  2. oooo I'm glad most don't mind wordy logs. I've been known to have fun w/words after the exciting fun of finding caches.... and sometimes there's a little silverwolfe story... check out my logs for icarus & champoeg caches, or the great bend traffic circle cache, or odders swim event.... (don't know how to put those handy little links that just say 'here'....). I tend to write short bits in the actual log (bad handwriting, small spaces, and sometimes trying to not be obvious), but have wordy fun online.... On a day w/lots of caches, there might be shorter 'stories', but usually I try to write something...... I appreciate the caches, and sure enjoy finding them!! aaa wooooo..... silverwolfe is finally winding down for the night, ready to tuck her tail over her face to keep the cold eastern wind from biting her nose, knowing her feet will be twitching in her dreams as she looks for that last DNF one last time....
  3. Interesting thread..... Awareness seems the most important ingredient of all the responses. I've 'felt' need to exercise caution at times and places , but as mentioned can never predict, so 'awareness' is always crucial.... and after reading all the above, I should be more 'prepared' than I am. I lived in the woods many years and actually have more fear of the humanoid whackos than errant animals, altho respect them greatly!! And dangerously, a ('whacko', drunk/druggie) doesn't respond in typical ways, and is often impervious to the pain they're encountering, thus fight on in deranged ways! And to add to 'prepared', a friend who works in the woods lectured me recently about having sufficient first aid kit/supplies in my car!!! If someone was injured, would you be able to take care of them/yourself at your rig?? I'll keep practicing vigilance and caution along w/my excitement and enjoyment, and try to find some cachers to go w/for some of the 'caution' caches. PS: I'm not opposed to guns for protection or family hunting. One protected me from an aggressive bear quite nicely....
  4. http://jeep.geocaching.com/ (after they talk about geocaching and to look at geocaching how to get started on gc.com...... they talk about the jeepTBs): What is a Jeep Travel Bug? It’s a white die-cast Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with an official metal tag attached. We’ve hidden approximately 5,000 Jeep Travel Bugs in caches located in the lower 48 states. When you find a Jeep 4x4 Travel Bug, enter the unique tracking number into the Jeep Geocaching site at http://jeep.geocaching.com to log its movements in the real world. You can then move it to the next cache you find so others can help it on its journey. What is a Jeep 4x4 Geocaching Challenge? When you find a white Jeep 4x4 Travel Bug you have the opportunity to sign up for the Jeep 4x4 Geocaching Challenge. Each month you will be provided with three goals for the white Jeep 4x4 Travel Bugs. You can enter the contest by completing one of the three goals each month - by taking a photo with the Jeep 4x4 Travel Bug and the goal in the same photo. (If you do not find a Travel Bug see the note on the contest page.) Each month, we’re awarding three Garmin eTrex Legend C GPS units to the first prize contest winners! But make sure to move the Jeep 4x4 Travel Bug to another cache for others to enjoy.
  5. oooo scared to write in such a volatile forum.... but I have 2 thoughts after reading this... first: so many TBs just disappear - as if people don't realize they're special and let the kids or dogs just have them, w/o regard to the TB's purpose. Perhaps a BRIGHTLY colored special tag to go w/them that briefly explains "this TB belongs to a family like yours. They have sent it on a journey and as it needs to keep traveling, please replace in a cache asap. Thanks for respecting their TBs and enjoying the sport w/us all" kind of tag..... yes, many have the sheets, but somehow, something BIG, more instantly visibly CATCHY... second: the jeeps - oooo i would love to find one, take some pics, then send it back on its way. (maybe on the hood of my v6 honda waaay out in the woods where few hondas go??) Yes, i bet the temptation to keep them as a collectable is strong. Perhaps Jeep could make a smaller replica of the TB Jeep, and if people sent pic of themselves w/the TB (well, actually that's how to enter the contest!!), and there were logs to show it was moving on, they could be sent the 'replica'. Jeep would know how many people actually had interacted w/their TBs and be sending little permanent reminders of their "jeep" w/the replicas..... after all, the TBs are a marketing tool, and even sending replicas would become a hands-on marketing tool..... yes, i'm a relative newbie still, only 37 finds, and no GPS yet!!! But I really enjoy the TBs, have fun taking pics of their journey thru my world, and write to the people when I have stalled their TB for some reason. (like not finding that complicated cache to put it in!!) just my several-cents and a few-woofs worth! Silverwolfe
  6. Ooooo excited me, sudden trip to Kalispell. I can ride back w/friend driving back 6/22, but how to get there w/o my car!!! Just in case anyone is driving up that way the 17th (or eve of 16th)... perhaps hit some caches on the way.... share gas.... thanks, silverwolfe!
  7. Oh duh, where am I leaving from?? Good catch yumitori!! I'm by Portland, Or, in Tualatin. Could maybe leave thurs mid afternoon too! Thanks for merging me, Team Misguided.
  8. Hi - my son & I lived many years in NW Mt - from Silver Butte (Libby area - son born there) to Kalispell. Now living in Portland, Or, area. But - I come home 2 or 3 times a year, back to the Flathead, Silver Butte, friends, family..... Now that I'm totally hooked on this geocaching, it will be really fun to check out some caches this summer ! Silverwolfe
  9. Anyone else traveling internationally from the NW ?? I also have found a TB that wants to travel the world...... Silverwolfe
  10. Fire-lookout cache site in Libby, 59923. Sorry, don't remember the name.
  11. IN case you haven't left yet.... Tualatin is about 12 mi So of PDX. 97062. Once Upon a Ferry II, east off I-5 probly less than 1/4 mile - nice park to walk around in, to easily find cache. Also, ArtWalk is downtown Tualatin, again less than 1/4 mi west off I-5; Atfalati, 1/4+ mile off I-5, very nice park to walk around, following the clues.... have a fun drive. just did the Tualatin to Bay Area drive myself..... silverwolfe
  12. welllll.... I put pics in my TB log entry, and they show up in the indiv log entry, the TB's gallery pics, and in my Profile Gallery. That's part of my questions answered..... I see others have looked at the question, so maybe I'm not the only confused one???
  13. OKay, I'm usually not tooo dense but this has me stumped...... I find a cache & p/u a TB. I log the cache and the TB. I take a pic of the cache-area - I can post it to my cache log - does it then go automatically to the gallery for that cache as well as my individual post??? Does it automatically go to my profile gallery? I have fun taking pics of the TBs and locations about them - but where do I put them??? Do I post them in my "TB found log"? Sometimes they're not real relevant to the cache, more to the TB. So, if I upload them to the 'TB found' log - will they show up in the TB gallery, or only in the individual log? If I send them to the owner of the TB, and they post them to the site, will they show up in my profile's gallery? How do I do it so they also show up in my profile's gallery??? If I post a pic to my cache log, and then post it to the TB log, it shows up twice in my profile gallery - can I delete the duplicate pic in my gallery w/o deleting it from the log????? Sorry for so many questions, but couldn't find the answers anywhere! I even read the FAQs!!! Thanks for the help, Silverwolfe
  14. QUESTION: I picked up a TB that has been stalled by Seattle, wants to travel the world, 25,000 miles..... brought it to Portland area, but going to Bend. Can I log it into/out of a local cache to set the mileage here in PDX before going to Bend, which might add a few miles, vs the 'straight as the crow flies' mileage from Seattle to Bend?? Should I actually go to the cache and sign the log to verify TB was in/out??? (ooooo, looking for answers, now I see there's a shuttle at the airport!! maybe I'll have to look into that!! ) Thanks ..... Silverwolfe
  15. other odd memories.... my 25 yr old son, who was not raised around cig smokers, has loved zippos since probly 10yr old!! I never could figure out why..... sorry, digressing from thread.....
  16. oh me oh myo.... so many things to consider.... and THEN I see an article about GPS and cell phones!!! ack?? might not be the best for geocaching, might be handy in what you're up to! http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,...x031605a,00.asp But your quandry led me to wonder - do you have a PDA w/wireless of somesort - and can download mapquest maps of the area???? That might work?! If the GPS might not get satellites b/c of the buildings, the PDA would probly still get reception. Specially in such a 'techy' society! in fact - maybe you'll find the just right toy - oh, I mean tool - there! altho their base maps will be of there, and may not be changeable to your home area, from what I've read in the forums..... have fun
  17. I know I'm probly doing it the hard way, but we gotta start somewhere. No GPS yet, and low $$ leads me to..... cut & paste each cache page & hints, whatever I think I'll need, into Word.doc, save on the SD card on my Ipaq. Then..... I make maps, save to the SD card also..... been helpful so far!! I've been using USAPhotoMaps on my PC, getting the b/w aerial photos. I mark my waypoints, and have it 'show names of waypoints' (don't remember if the names show up on the ipaq).... (of course, copla times we've had my laptop in the car, and can run the cursor around the USAPhotoMaps on it, to find the coordinates - can't do the active part on the ipaq) I change the size of the map area that I want really small - too small just becomes green wp dots on gray graph, but next size up from that - and save as "copy to screen0#.jpg" (can tell by date/time which "screen pic #" it was saved as in USAPhotoMap directory). Then I send it to my ipaq SD card as a .jpg!!! works pretty slick. Then, can enlarge it on the ipaq to see the area, or keep it smaller for general area.....
  18. In case you wander to Eastern Wa, which is real close to NW Idaho, thus soooo close to NW Mt..... there's a cache at Swede Mtn Lookout, just outside Libby, Mt (hwy 2E)! A friend is the ranger/fire lookout there in the summer - has met cachers looking for treasures as well as a great view!!
  19. Dang you're going to be traveling fast and furiously!!! Yes, you're missing a beautiful part of Mt by missing Glacier & the Flathead Valley!! It rivals w/yellowstone/Tetons for beauty and charm.... would be easy to loop by and enjoy. From Spokane, I-90 past Coeur D'Alene to St Regis, North to Kalispell, goes thru the rolling hills of the Hot Springs area, comes out on west side of Flathead Lake, then kal; Glacier Park is at the NE end of the Flathead Valley, just NE above Kal. Then after cruise thru Glacier, go back south along East-side Flathead Lake (Bigfork is on the EN side, cute artsy lake town, W perhaps quicker if time an issue) thru Polson at the south end, to Missoula. Missoula is about 2 hrs South of Kalispell. Take about 4 hrs from cda to kal?? check out Gold Rush Pawn in Kal - great pawn/new/gifts shop - lots of great goods, even occass GPSs! CDs, DVDs..... great jewelry toooooo of course my fav way to get there is N at coeur d'alene to sandpoint, hwy 200E to Bull River, N(hwy37?) to hwy 2, E to libby to Kal!!! takes about 1/2 hr longer. Driving thru rural NW mts for sure - very undeveloped, scenic (quick roads) !!! There's a cache at swede mtn lookout outside libby (a friend is the ranger there, probly not open yet)- but you won't have time. Can actually take hwy 2 from spokane to kalispell (goes thru libby again) but windier roads..... The speedlimits are quick in Mt, but in the dusk/dark - any infraction will be expensive - also careful when speeding on reservations in any state!!! and boy - some of those Mt caches look tough!!! HAVE FUN, DRIVE SAFELY!!! OH - you'll love Portland area - lots of fun caches, and beautiful besides!!!
  20. Yep - AOL 4 hrs = $4.95, I kept that just for my email name that is there..... but then netzero free =10 hrs. Benjamin w/the Verizon cell phone - can you internet your laptop thru it?? I think I can w/my Nokia but haven't gotten the cable yet. hmmmmm, could I run internet on my ipaq thru my phone!! ooooo ideas ideas.....
  21. Yes, check w/your cable provider if they have dial-up numbers you can use on your same plan (an 800# would be really great!). I've used Netzero for years now. $9.95/mo = unlimited hrs; free = 10 hrs/month/household. They have many many numbers now, but obscure places may still be hard to get local lines?? So far, usually can get local access w/my laptop on trips..... I've wondered if there is a 'surge-type protector' to put on the modem line though when traveling at hotels, etc..... Also wonder if you could use a 'phone-card' like at costco and use that as your 'long-distance access' when in 'obscure' locations (type all the numbers in the dialing string....)? OOOO I see that I'm not a tadpole anymore!!!! I'm a 'real' geocacher!!! whoo hooo....
  22. out driving around east of Bend (Oregon) last weekend, and saw 2 people, in different areas, walking along with - their cell phone out in front of them??? noooooo .... hee hee hee - it was their GPS..... we knew what theeeey were up tooo.....
  23. A question re: "other" maps having serial drivers, vistaC being USB - Can an adaptor from serial to USB bypass that problem? Does that imply other garmin GPSs that use serial connections can use the 3rd party maps easier?? I'm considering a Vista or gpsmap60......
  24. Lthrwrk - very nice concha sig items!! prize for 5? the links to hook them together in a short strap, to add to their GPS's "leash". (Do people have their GPS on a string so doesnt' get lost? Don't have one yet, pencil in pocket....) When dogsledding, I always had a string to my camera from the sled, so it bounced instead of getting lost ! For (15) they could make a belt??!! hee hee...
  25. connection blues.... sometimes my ipaq 3955 won't synch till I'm beyond frustration, but most times it just hooks up and synchs happily away. I can't figure the difference. I did see mention in an ipaq forum about - is it seating properly in the holder? There's a button on the back of the base which helps secure the ipaq (by making the space wider or narrower.....) Also, is your security allowing the link to the alien ipaq 'puter? I'll watch the thread to see if you get it figured out, maybe will help my sporadic syncher!
