I get the same filename syntax error. Thanks though!
-
Thanks Scott - as you can see, I get the same error msg that the filename syntax is incorrect, and it won't delete the folder. Which is why I am considering a format of the internal memory.
-
Yes there was an error msg. See above two screen caps - 1 from DOS and 1 from Windows - both refer to incorrect filename syntax. So - if I reformat the internal memory, will I be able to restore it from the backup I made?
-
Yes I did Scott - both from within Windows, and from the DOS prompt.
-
To Format, or Not to Format - that is the question. I think the presence of that undeletable .gpx file is causing some caches to appear to be missing from the GPS. So I am leaning towards formatting the OR's internal memory. I have backed it up into a winzip file, without the weird .gpx file. Before I do this, I would like to know if anyone else has successfully formatted their internal memory and then reloaded it from a backup? Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried deleting from a DOS window, but no luck, as per screen cap below. Grrrr

I have NEVER lost lock in the woods under dense NJ deciduous summer tree cover w/ my 60CSx.

I have a weird GPX file on my Oregon that I cannot delete, rename, cut/paste, move, move into a .zip file or modify in any way. The characters in the filename to the left of the .GPX are not alpha-numeric. See attached screen capture. Any ideas or suggestions?

Best battery charger and where to get it
GerIRL replied to daryl20's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'll also second that motion. I buy them 8 or 12 at a time and then label them in pairs - A1 w/ A2; A3 w/ A4; B1 w/ B2 etc etc, That way I can always keep the pairs together. I carry 8 spares w/ me, all orientated together - with the + end up. When I change a pair out in the field, I put the used ones back in the case with 1 of the pair with the + end pointing down. That way when I get home, I always know which pair needs to be charged. -

Recommendation for a Garmin 60CSX screen protector?
GerIRL replied to Sgt_Strider's topic in GPS technology and devices
ZAGG is the way to go. Just ordered an oregon one. Used "sitewide30" code to get 30% off w/ free shipping. I've used about 6 of these over the years on various gadgets and love them. -
It seems I should spend the few extra bucks and get the 60 CSX instead of a lesser model. Will it give me a dvd or something that I can learn from? Remember I have never done this before. thanks, adam Also - if you're ever stuck, just post another question on these forums, and everybody will be happy to offer advice. Buy it, play with it and see how you make out.
-
Additionally, no matter which GPsr you buy, make sure to get a screen protector from ZAGG.com. $12 incl postage, but will protect your display from being damaged by keys etc for ever.

Firstly, I would commend NYPaddleCacher for the tremendous post above - I even learned a lot from it. I would go for the 60CSx over the 60CS. I used a 60CS for 3 years and really liked it, but it would lose satellite lock under dense foliage. In the year I've been using my 60CSx, I have never once lost a good satellite fix. Also, when you return to the US, the 60CSx can utilize the NT series of Garmin maps, and supports a microSD card. It costs just under $300, but is well worth it. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy Cameroon.

Garmin GPSMap 60CSx for $159.99 at Amazon
GerIRL replied to Orange butterfly's topic in GPS technology and devices
The lowest I saw it for last week was $260 w/ free S&H. My feeling is that after the holiday season and new year, in those Jan and Feb doldrums, it might drop back down in price. At any of these prices, it's a great value for a rock solid performing GPS. -
60csx - Rocker button rubber base cracking
GerIRL replied to ShugZero's topic in GPS technology and devices
Hey ShugZero - how many caches did you do over the year? I'm trying to figure out how long until my Rocker Button Cover goes! -
But then, there's always the question of caches placed . . . Now, if it was a question of DDonuts placed, then it's a no brainer - the Eagle has landed

Adding distance to GPS coordinates?
GerIRL replied to Len & Cheri's topic in GPS technology and devices
As they say - there's more than one way to cook an egg! It took me literally about one minute to click on the GPX link, wait for GSAK to open, then right click on the waypoint and enter the bearing/distance, twice. Probably faster than to change your units to UTM, and then do the 2 calc's. -
Thanks eaparks. I never noticed the small D's in the bottom of the satellite bars before, probably because I don't display the satellite page too often! Sitting inside, I have 9 bars, 7 of which have a 'D'.

Adding distance to GPS coordinates?

I would also assume a TRUE bearing, especially as magnetic bearings change from year to year. -
There has been some very spirited recent debate both in this forum and in the DeLorme forums regarding the PN-40's ability to acquire and maintain a WAAS lock - whether the satellite strength bars turn "BLUE" to indicate WAAS lock (not that your beer has attained the temperature of the Rockies!). I have used a 60CSx for a year and a PN-40 for a week. I have been very impressed at the 60's consistent ability to maintain a good 3d lock regardless of overhead cover. The PN-40 seems to work very nicely for geocaching, and the tracks of both units overlay each other quite impressively. However, the PN-40 (for me) has never displayed the WAAS "BLUE" bars. My question is: How does the 60CSx indicate whether it has, or HAS NOT locked into a WAAS signal/correction? I've pored over the manual and if that piece of information is in there, I've missed it. Is it possible that the 60CSx also (in northern NJ) has a hard time locking into WAAS, but we never know the difference thanks to the superb "SIRF chipset/helicoil antenna" configuration? Thanks.

today on amazon - the 60CSx was $260.95 w/ free shipping and no sales tax. Nice deal.
