  1. My question is kind of similar, only NOT... Is there any way to upload one picture, but have it linked to two items? I've uploaded a picture for a cache log (WP=GCKHJM), but it would also be nice for the same picture to be linked to a TB log. Seems like the only way to do that is to upload it twice, but that seems a little much. Any ideas?
  2. Thanks, Robert! I really appreciate your looking at this and zeroing in on the problem. Ahem... FYI Word & Excel *correctly* rejected the file because it was bad. Their doing so only validates my claim that there's a problem with the file, not Mapsource. Actually, Word has a very nice interface when it comes to viewing XML files. And I must say, my favorite project during my tenure at Microsoft was the very first version of Word for Windows (code-named Opus). That's going off-topic, though. Mainly, I just want to thank Robert for his help here.
  3. OK, I've been doing some research. If you open the file in Internet Explorer, all seems fine and there are no visible problems. You can open it in Notepad, with no complaints. If you attempt to open it in Word or Excel, they both complain about strange Unicode characters in the file. Hmmm...
  4. I just think it's a bug somewhere. Maybe it's Groundspeak's, maybe it's Garmin's. I ran the query again, from a different waypoint, and it worked. So... go figure. I just updated software & drivers yesterday, so everything's up to date. So anyway, something is definitely wrong here. I will not load it into something else and convert it. It should just work. Thank you, robertlipe for your support. The main reason I'm even mentioning it is because there is a problem that needs to be looked at, and hopefully fixed.
  5. 246670.gpx is the file, I don't know if you keep copies. It's also my "2stars" pocket query in my account. Normally, all is well. But when I try to load this file in Mapsource (v. 6.5), it behaves badly. First, I get a dialog asking which kind of waypoint symbols my GPS uses, which I don't normally see. Then, regardless of which of the three radio buttons I select, I get an alert which reads: -------- ------ ------- "<whatever the filepath is on my machine>\....\246670" could not be imported." A problem was found near line 40 No spaces were found after the record ID. -------- ----- ----- --- Yes, I would be happy to go through the steps again but I do not want to hit today's limit on queries. I had a look at the XML code and couldn't see anything obvious to edit. Please let me know if there's something I can do to make this work. Thx.
  6. Not a huge deal--- I put a [8D] in the biography section of my profile. Here's what was auto-inserted --- // // <img src= // 'http://www.geocaching.com/images/icons/icon_smile_cool.gif' // border="0" align="middle">> // I got the cool smiley, but also a '>' (the gt tag interpreted). So then I edited it and took out the '>' and now everything looks fine.
  7. "Hey, what did you do this weekend?" "Uh, well, I went out to a lake, miles from my house, to meet complete strangers in the pouring rain, and we took canoes out to a little island where we hunted for boxes with little trinkets, using GPS units." "um. OK." "It was the BEST! I had a really great time!!!!!!" "Yeah.... sure....."
  8. HA! This is great! Puppers clued me in and I'll be there! Does anyone remember when that lake got 4ft thick ice on it one year? We skated! Can't wait to meet the faces behind the names.
  9. So there I was, determined to find a couple of caches in Hamlin park in Seattle the other day, when along came a woman with three dogs; I was unable to find what I was after, because I spent my time talking with her (and her lovely dogs). She was clearly not a geocacher but she knew what I was up to. And she said her son the policeman really appreciates our presence because it drives away the criminal element. Well, now, how 'bout that? There's a bill in S.C. to restrict geocaching , but it appears that we're doing good just by being around. So that's cool. . I wonder if there's a way to track this? I know of one park (Christie) in Seattle that is currently a major hangout for people that I don't tend to associate with, and that a cache has recently been placed there. I'd be interested to see if the demographics of that park change as more geocachers show up there. Anybody else have similar "good presence" anecdotes?
  10. Nature Conservancy is a fantastic organization! First I ever heard of it was about 15 years ago when they were collecting donations so they could buy a huge chunk of land just to keep it from being oil-drilled. I mean, what I'm trying to say is they just do what needs doing instead of whining about what needs doing. And YES I would buy a geocaching bracelet. Brilliant. And donating proceeds to the Nature Conservancy is a perfect partnership.
  11. How/when do you update your zip code information? I keep hoping the Woodinville problem will get corrected but since it isn't happening: 1. 98072 is the main Zip code for Woodinville, WA -- NOT Cottage Lake which is an area of Woodinville. The first geocaches were placed in the Cottage Lake area, I remember that. 2. 98077 is a valid zip code which is in Unincorporated King County, East of Avondale Road, West of the city of Duvall, and is considered part of Woodinville. It was added two years ago to the zip code system. Thanks!

    Family Ids

I have friends who won't log their finds if they find 'em just with me, because they aren't with their families, who they usually go geocaching with. That seems a bit of a shame! And also, my family isn't generally interested; so I'm on my own for doing this, unless my young teenagers miraculously become intrigued (which they do, on occasion!). When that happens, they don't want "their" finds to be logged on my account. So I got to thinking, wouldn't it be nice if my friends could have their own separate ID, which was somehow linked to their family's ID. (And vice versa, what if I could have a family ID for those miracle days when my kids show an interest). And, as a premium member, these should be able to access the premium features. So just signing up with just an ordinary ID wouldn't work, wouldn't be the same. How 'bout it? Cool idea or what?
