  1. What irks me??? Getting up at 5am...fueling up my car...buying breakfast, grabbing a lunch and packing it.....driving 2 hours to a bike trail...caching all day and buying dinner on the way home at dark. I followed a big number cachers 50,000+, and was kind of excited about seeing his signature on the logs I was signing....and ended up NOT SEEING ONE SIGNATURE of his on any of the logs. I scoured the logs, took pics, looked more when I got home. it was obvious on every one where his signature SHOULD BE on OCT 13, 2015 and NOT ONE was seen!! He didn't even make it look good by AT LEAST showing up for the first 5 or so!! GEEZ!!! I ended up biking 6.5 miles up worth of caches and 6.5 back on the same trail and I did about 50 in one day. He logged every cache on the trail (34.37 miles long of caches every .1 to .2 miles apart) He even logged the bonus caches along the way of which I never bothered because I knew it would slow me down. Thats over 300 caches logged in one day. I think he lost the true meaning of caching abd why he got into it to begin with.
  2. That is a scary story nub! wow! Thanks for sharing!
  3. I think the obvious answer is "getting approval" before placing...but let's be honest here folks....how many out there get approval? Maybe this is the "unspeakable" part of geocaching we aren't supposed to talk about...but in my humble opinion and limited experience with only 63 finds, I would hate to guess how few caches are "approved". I would guess in the single percentage points Im thinking at this point.
  4. Recently went to visit my parents on vacation with my wife and son. I wanted to introduce my dad to Geocaching so I bought him a GPS and preloaded a bunch in for his area. On a food run up to Walmart, with entire family in tow, I thought I'd show him the fun since I spotted one on my GPS in the parking lot. Typical skirt hidden geocache. Pulled up next to it, in stealth mode. Got out, made the find, signed the log. Looked around and placed back. Nothing unusual right? 2 days later I saw the cache was archived which I thought strange. It had over 250 logged entries and hidden since 2007. The log entry above mine by the 'original hider' stated that a Walmart employee spotted a person 'hiding something' under the lightpole skirt and called the police. The police then notified the bomb squad and the entire area was roped off and the "mystery package" was then found to have a rolled up piece of paper in it (a geo-log obviously). Word got around quick in my parents community about the "bomb scare" in their small town. Your thoughts and ideas on this kind of cache, any similar scary stories and if you avoid muggle areas at all anymore?
  5. Heading south out of Mulberry, FL on RT37 you'll find 87 caches in a row with one planted every .1-.2 miles for about 18 miles. Will be hitting a few when I go down this week:-)
  6. hey all, thank you for the kind replys. I have a dakota 10 and wife has magellan explorer GC. I have loaded individual caches in mine, but not in mass. I want the ability to do so because my dakota has no preloads (singles are quite tedious) and my wife is kicking my butt as we travel around locally with finds! lol This is all very confusing and need step by step. ugh!
  7. Wondering how to load a large area with just a few clicks as opposed to clicking on each individual cache and waiting. Seems to take a while to get even a dozen or so loaded and there should be a more efficient way.
  8. Is Mapsource supposed to come on a CD with the GPS? Im not understanding?
  9. If I do have "mapsource" on my dakota, Im not understanding how to find it and then ultimatly utilize it. I may have to have it spelled out for me.
  10. Im new to both GPS and geocaching. I heard you can "download free maps" from gpsfiledepot.com I figure this would add topo maps to my GPS? So I found I wanted the central EAST map and found one labeled "US planometric central east map". Not sure what that means, but I'll learn quick, I just need to get on track here as I'm stumbling out of the gate. So I go to download it and it dumps it as an APP into my owner files. I then run set up and it throws a series of maps into C: program files (x86)/us_p_ce I then get to reading under the install instructions it's supposed to 'appear' in GARMIN MAPSOURCE? No clue what that was...so...then I read the tutorial and it leads me to a link on downloading the 'mapsource" over at the Garmin websight and it tells me I have to have previously owned a mapsource product in order for it to work. Im now back to square one. It won't let me download the mapsource but the gpsfiledepot tutorial (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsource-if-it-didnt-come-with-your-gps/) on this subject says it should work and I quote "is simple", but when it leads me to Garmin (http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209) it says: ◦WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a MapSource product. I JUST bought this dakota and figured mapsource would come with it? and I just want some free maps !lol UGH HEEEELPPP I just need help wading through teh basics of downloading maps....
