  2. Jeffambs03, You don't have to break the bank to start geocaching. Any GPS that allows you to input a waypoint will work. You should be able to find just about as many geocaches with a basic unit as you can with the most expensive GPS. My preference for a person just starting out would be one of the fine new basic handhelds currently being sold. Try looking at your local sales papers or pick up a cheap unit online. I personally started with a Garmin Etrex Legend that I used for hunting. I still have this GPS and it works as good as any GPS I have. The main thing is to decide what you want to use the unit for and how much you want to spend. After you have decided these things, shop around because there are lot of new and used GPS units you can buy to fill your needs.
  3. If you have a Palm and want to do paperless caching go to this page. Geocaching University Paperless Caching
  4. I'm surprised you get any reception under the dash like that. Do you have a SiRF III chip? Hermit No SiRF III chip. I have the 60CS and also a vista cx and both work fine after you get sat lock. I use a rino windshield mount for my 60 CS and a 60 CS windshield mount with the CS holder removed for my Vista. The good thing about them being under the dash is that you can't see them unless you get up close and look through the window.
  5. Good idea. I got a windshield mount last week and tried it a few days ago . . . couldn't see a thing, too dark. I'll just leave the backlight on and recharge the batteries. Sure didn't want the expense or hassle of a cord. Hermit I use a windshield mount also but have it stuck to my Speedo panel in the shade with my unit backlit all the time. I keep a Maha 401 in the car hooked up to charge my extra batteries.
  6. I agree with pdxmarathonman also. Another thing to consider is the battery charger you use to charge the batteries. I keep one in the car so I always have fresh batteries. By the way I no longer use a power cord in the car-- no need as long as you have a good charger and few extra batteries.
  7. I have used serial to USB on my rinos and also my legend with no problems. The cable and software I used to connect to EasyGPS and mapsource came with the cable and I purchased it off Ebay.
  8. No doubt it would be an etrex. I would look around and find a Vista C (one of last years best) or a venture CX. If you could add another 50 to the price you could pick up a gpsmap 60 cs.
  9. I have the same question and sent an EMail to Garmin but they have not replied. Thanks for asking the question

    Oak Coins

I have worked and a couple of projects with Oak coins and hope to do more business with them in the near future. The coins look great and if you have a problem they work hard to get it worked out. A+++ in my book
  20. I had already decided to stay in for the night when I saw the post show up on one of my caches. My wife told me I was crazy when I ran out the door to check on a cache in the dark. Now all I can say is wow!! I will treasure the coin that the geocoin fairy left in the cache. I am not sure who or what the geocoin fairy is but all I can say is that I believe. As I stated in the geocache forum "We (geocachers)are a group that believes. So if anyone doubts that there is a geocoin fairy just look at all the kind words and the thought that have been put down on this board."
  21. I think the coin you are talking about is a UK quest event coin and it can be activated at http://www.gccoins.com/WL2active.php Thanks, Big Rick
