  1. OK.. I've been lurking around the forum (I have to agree with others.... looks like it's about time for Geocoins to have their own Category). I've ordered a few different coins when they've come up for availability... waiting on 8 to arrive as this is written. So far I have had 3 in my hand. Oooooh shiny things.... *drool* I'm trying to pace myself, but I'm afraid of missing an "important" coin. I first told myself I"d only get gc.com trackable coins. Then I said only state coins of states I've cached in. Then it was going to be only states I've physically been in (all the lower 48! ) - until I bought 2 Alaska coins. OK... Just states though... Then I worked out a trade deal with pdxmarathonman for a coin I don't even have in hand yet. Hmmm OK.... no holds barred I guess.. just keep the prices reasonable. But I do REALLY want to get the states I've cached in and a couple other important to me. However, I'm afraid I"ve missed them already... at least 2 of 'em. My home state (Tennessee) is on order - awaiting arrival. UTAH - a sort of temporary home and second largest cache find state has already been minted and sold out... is there any way I can still purchase one since I'm low on trade fodder at the moment?? COLORADO - a Favorite state to drive through.. also missed... same question as above WYOMING - Has this one been done yet?? I thought I had found a thread for it, but am unclear if the coin has/is being made. ILLINOIS - My birth state - Is there a coin yet? FLORIDA - Hubby's birth state.. again, is there a coin?? CANADA (country-wide or perhaps just ONTARIO and QUEBEC) - Been there.. REALLY liked Ontario for it's super nice and helpful people. I have some canadian coins, but a Canadia GEOCOIN! Sweeet reminder of the trips I'm missing. Any information is appreciated. And anybody willing to give up a spare coin for cash I have PayPal and would be happy to discuss an offer. (I have an ebay account, but I'm not into paying $30+ for a coin... if they start costing that much I'm out for good). TeamZebra (The Queen Zebra - King Zebra hasn't quite caught the coin bug yet)
  2. Somebody who doesn't have a pdxmarathonman coin, feel free to contact me about a trade I'll also trade for the screw geocoin I'll take pdxmarathonman's lead once again and ask if anyone wants to order an extra coin and trade me for my Mauison geocoin. Thanks. PM sent.
  3. Ex-truckers here currently residing in the Knoxville area. Not too far from the landing strip known as I-40. Sorry to say there's not a whole lot in the actual Knoxville area that would be real EASY to get to.. We most recently drove for a certain company based in Salt Lake City which I'd rather not mention because I have no intention of advertising for these losers. But we were able to rack up lots of caching time in the SLC/West Valley area. Most of it was done with the use of a rental vehicle though. The ones we managed to snag with the rig were some you had already mentioned such as the virtual in Cheyenne (Did you log the benchmark there as well?), and the Little America cache. There's another one in at another Little America... but I can't remember the exact location. There's the Travel Bug Mansion in Utah (GCH3QC) that's easy to get to. You have to park on the exit ramp since there's no turn around, but if you're headed east you can pull off onto the ramp, walk a very short distance to the cache and get right back on the big road very easily. Something I found quite useful was using GSAK and Microsoft Streets and Trips. Since alot of the "right off the Interstate" caches have the road name in them (I-40 Travel Bug Hotel for example) you can filter out the possibles pretty easily once you run PQs for different states. I have Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska and a few others saved in GSAK. I'd export them into Streets and Trips and them create a route from our current location to where we were headed. Streets and Trips has a feature that will let you search for "Places of Interest" along your planned route. Take Cheyenne to SLC for example. I'd search for my pushpins (exported caches) within 1 mile of my route. THen use the map to see which ones were close enough to exits that might give us the opportunity to get in and out with the rig. Did this once on a trip north out of Denver and managed to snag three really nice ones in a small park just north (near Thornton). We parked at the nearby Wal-Mart and walked to the park and grabbed the three caches (Big Squirt #1, #2 and #3) . Although our travelling days are over - at least for now. I still have about 6000 caches stored in Gsak and have a .GPX file of the ones we did with the truck if anyone is interested. I can email the .GPX file and it'll pop nicely into GSAK. I've been trying to think of some more places to hide caches in the Knoxville area that would be truck accessible. As for current ones.... There is one within a reasonable distance from the Flying Hook at Exit 369. It's supposed to be a Travel Bug Hotel... but tends to Eat bugs. GCKH7A There's another one I found just off the 374 close to the TA. (GC67CD) I wouldn't suggest parking at the TA and walking though... not in this heat. BUT there were two trucks parked at the nearby motel when I found the cache. You take the road across from the TA (dead ends at the old Knights Inn it has a different name now... West End or something like that). There's enough room for a turn-around there, but it's not the easiest one. Probably the best plan would be to drop your trailer at the TA for a little while and bobtail over to the cache. They don't mind you dropping trailers there as long as you park it in the back and it's best to sign it in with the fuel desk. We've left a reefer there for a couple days at a time with no problems. THe Wal-Mart at Walker Springs has one in the parking lot (a VERY VERY small micro) (GCHJ8D) and there's trucks parked there all the time.. another place we'd been known to leave our truck for a few when visiting the home 20. And don't forget to read up on the Locationless caches!! Remember all those barn in Ohio with the bicentennial paint jobs??? Those are loggable. (GC34B6) I know there are more geotruckers out there.. There's a guy who drives for Knight Transportation (Also in SLC) ... Umm... What was his name... Halfamind & My Better Half (had to look it up). Anyway.. I'd run across his log on a cache we found in our truck and looked at some of his cache finds. He mentions most of the ones he's found in his truck as being "truck friendly" in his logs... so this gave me more caches to pick from. It takes some time and work, but with enough effort and drive (pun intended) you can build up a GSAK database of truck caches. Or perhaps a better plan is if we can get enough people involved... each person start with a state and through PQs and map filtering we can get a list of caches along each major interestate that truckers and RVers can use. It'd be nice to be able to pop in an exit number and have nearby caches with big truck parking appear.
  4. Someone who's actually done this should be able to clarify more... but I've read somewhere in the threads that you can contact Groundspeak (Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong here) and get the activation code from them.
  5. Got two shiny coins in Tennessee today.. WOOHOO!! VERY nice job... So far all I've got in my "personal collection" to compare 'em to is the 2005 USA coin... but man,... for being essentially the same type (bronze) coin... these are way shinier!! Very nice job... Thanks!
  6. Haha, that's awesome! Can someone combine those all into one .gif? Ummm.... not sure if any of my editing programs can handle animated .gifs. Never tried... I'm sure someone here knows how to do it... if I happen to fail miserably.
  7. I added the information I could find on the New Jersey coin as well as the now-in-production Tennessee coin which will also be trackable on gc.com. Speaking of the NJ coin... has anybody heard any RECENT news on that one??? The thread seems to have disappeared and the webpage is a bit outdated.
  8. I'm buying some Maryland Geocoins and have been told that they are trackable. They have their own unique coin icon too! Instead of the gold coin with a cent sign it is the center from the Maryland state flag. I'm to lazy, right now, to post a picture. Maybe later. The Maryland coin's icon looks like this: .
  9. I have an idea that would be considered more environmentally friendly... Instead of making the Jeeps radioactive... I heard they were adding a special mosquito attracting agent.
  10. Does somebody wanna trade one of these for one of my pdxmarathonman coins? I might even entertain more than one offer for those of you without personal coins or state coins that I don't already have. Sending email.
  11. Quoted directly from website: I'll admit the wording is kinda odd.. but it sounds like good ole' GC.com tracking. I wonder if this has a generic Geocoin icon or some new fangled one like the Maryland coin will have.
  12. I like this one... not for a Geocoin, but another highly "prized" caching item. Hmmm no bids yet though... I guess the people who really want one are still taking the "cheap" route and stealing one instead. White Jeep Auction
  13. PETA --- That's People Eating Tasty Animals right? That's what it stands for in East Tennessee... but there's some stranger folks in more Western areas of the country that think animals shouldn't be consumed. So I guess that's where they decided Signal the Frog likes popcorn instead of flies. Then again, wasn't there some sort of diet once where you were supposed to eat popcorn?? Maybe Siggy is trying to lose weight???
  14. Well, according to my handy-dandy internet latin-english translator, that means... "If you wish this legere scis too much instruction government" GeoForse Best way to get the REAL translation is just copy/paste the entire phrase into a Google (or similar) search. You'll get lots of responses... and the correct translation. Cute.... and VERY true - provided you didn't have to look it up.
  15. I've seen 2 in caches. One I picked up, it wanted to go to Florida. Had it with me at an event and handed it off to another cacher who was supposed to be headed that way soon. The other was in a TB hotel and we were showing it to some folks from out of town. Didn't have any bugs with me at the time to trade out (it's a 1 for 1 cache ) All the others (including my personal milage coin) have been "found" in cacher's hands.
  16. That's classic! All that's missing are a few of these --> As for being offensive. I just don't get it. How do you even know the poster is doing it in response to ANY Posts? Maybe they have adopted signal as their digital internet pet and he's hungry. Seeing as how the folks at PETA would probably have a cow (pun intended) if someone were to create a smilie of Signal eating a fly (insect cruelty)... we feed him popcorn instead. Would it not be cruel to deprive Signal of food? I think so. No, I just don't see how could be offensive. I mean, seriously.. when compared to something like this ---> which would make it quite obvious that someone were poking fun at someone else. TRUST ME, there are much more offensive smilies in cyberspace... I'll not post them here, must protect the kiddies and all... but the only way I would be offended by a frog eating popcorn would be .... ummm.. oh yeah... If I were popcorn!! Edited to add this guy just cause I think he's cool.
  17. Mudbug, you are way too talented. First there's the caches, then you're making your own coins and now this??? I Bow to your greatness... As for Violin Signal... he's good, but he needs a band.
  18. OK... bad... What about ??? Or maybe... Or even... I wonder how much longer before this thread is locked???
  19. Setting filters in GSAK: Easy, click the "filter" button ... it's a piece of paper with a magnifying glass laying on it. When the Filter box opens, you just pick the criteria for the caches you want to view. For example, on my Palm right now I have all caches listed within 75 miles of home. I set a "Location" in GSAK with my home coordinates. (Tools, Options, Locations and enter your Home coordinates in the format shown in the box without a # in front of it. Such as: Home, N35 56.765, W 084 01.755) Then in the Location Dropdown box, Home will appear. Select that and GSAK shows you how far the caches are from your Home coordinates. So what I do with my filter is... Change Distance from "Any Distance" to "Less Than or Equal To" and enter 75 in the box that appears next to it. THere are TONS of options for Filters.... found status, name of the cacher who placed the cache, whether it has travel bugs.. etc. Just depends on your needs and moods. Click "go" and GSAK applies the filter only showing the caches that meet the criteria you set. In my case, I get all the caches within 75 miles of "Home". (Another thing to do to help with the Sync process... I didn't find this until last night) Is to create a Cachemate button on your GSAK toolbar. Go to: Macro and select Add Button to Toolbar. Select "exports" under categories and you will see the Cachemate Logo (among others) in the box on the right side. Click and drag it to the toolbar (it's probably white at this moment - GSAK's way of telling you where you can put it) wherever you want it. Once it's there, you can skip the whole File,Export,Cachemate PDB thing because it will bring up the Cachemate Export dialog automatically.
  20. I don't have a Zire (I have the Tungsten E2) but I'm assuming it would work the same way. Here's what I do... Set a filter in GSAK to show the caches you want to load into your palm. The number it will hold depends on your available memory. I've currently got about 650 in my Tungsten with plenty of room for more. In GSAK go to File, Export, Cachemate PDB file. In the pop-up window, create a name for the file. Mine defaults to C:\Program Files\palmOne\Add-on\CacheMate\XXXXX.pdb Make sure the box is checked next to "Install to Palm after conversion" Click on the stuff you want to import, you'll just have to play with them to see what you want. THen click "Generate". GSAK will do it's thing. If you're set up for Hotsync and your Palm is connected to your computer (either via cable or cradle) then a Hotsync screen should come up once it's done. All that's left is to start your Hotsync (push the button on the cradle/cable). When the sync is done, your info will automatically be loaded into Cachemate. Go into Cachemate on your Palm, choose the category you want them to go into. I start mine in "Not Found" and move the ones I've found by changing it manually on each cache. (Can't really give tap by tap details right now because the hubby has the PDA with him right now, but if you need more details I'll try to answer any questions as best as I can once I have it back home with me). It's a pretty simple process if you have GSAK updated. I can load 500 or more in less than a minute.
  21. That's just tooo funny!!! Did someone say beer?? Oh my, now look what you've caused. Death to ALL SMILIES!! Have we had enough yet?? Nahhh... one more...
  22. Hmm... OK.. We just had a cacher leave the area... Well actually his "going away party" is Sun. He had around 80 or 90 hides in the area and had no way of keeping them all in check. He archived some of them and adopted out about 1/3 of them. The other 1/3 he kept. I adopted 4 of his micros and Yes, I let him log them all as finds. It's not like he doesn't know where they are. I'm almost positive he's been there before. Any missing or questionable caches were archived as well as a series of caches he'd placed at the college he was attending here. The college series consisted of 10 caches. Two days before their archival I went out to find them all. One I DNF'd, and one had been snatched. I say snatched because the people who took it had left part of the cache behind. It had been attached to a tree with a string. The string was there as was a piece of the cache lid. I logged a DNF on this cache as well. However, I later changed it to a find because the owner told me I had in fact found a part of the cache and since it would not be replaced I could count it. I was leary of doing it, but given permission from the cache owner BEFORE logging it as a find, I felt it would be acceptable. I did not sign a log, but I did have what remained of the cache in my hands. There is a difference between logging a find with owners permission and taking it upon yourself to convert a cache to a virtual just so you can log it.
