  1. I use the above pack for almost all my outdoor activities, and it works great! It cost me almost $80, but I noticed it on sale here for much less: http://www.prolithic.com/hpages/trn_acc/ultcycle.html It holds a good amount of water, my first aid kit, snacks, knife, etc., plus trading items for caches. I can stuff a jacket in there if I need to. The best thing is that it has a great suspension system and hugs my body well. I did not like the hydration bladder that it came with, however, so I replaced it with an Eddie Bauer one from Target...no big deal. There is a photo of the pack at the above link. 2. I own a Compaq iPaq 3765. Palm systems generally have more software and accessories available to them, but the Pocket PC (formerly Windows CE) PDAs are coming right along. Currently, I'm using a small, custom cable (purchased on eBay for about $15) to connect my Garmin Etrex Venture directly to the iPaq. The software that I'm using is MS Pocket Streets 2002. I used the ipaq with pocket streets last week to find an access road for which I had been searching for more than a year...this helped me gain access to a part of a multi-leg cache. The biggest drawback to Pocket Streets (in my opinion) is that is only updates your position every 15 seconds (that's okay when walking, but when driving can cause you to miss turns), and that it doesn't have topographic features. I am VERY interested in the new Delorme Topo USA 4.0 which has just been released. This version now has both Palm and Pocket PC compatibility. I've had good experiences with other Delorme products in the past. I love the iPaq because of its color screen, fast processor, and multiple capabilities. Its $500 price is a little steep just for geocaching (a former job paid for mine), but its a great piece of equipment. Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  3. I'm two hours west of Richmond...would be interested in attending. I might also suggest a get together in the "true" geographic center of the state...Buckingham County. There are three state parks in the area: James River SP, Bear Creek Lake SP, and Twin Lakes SP. Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  4. Is there a web site for Geocachers who use Pocket PC devices (mine is a Compaq iPaq). Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  5. Congrats on finding that needle in a haystack (or box in a rockpile) cache at Devil's Marbleyard! I was stuck at home doing my taxes today...hope to get out sometime this week to go hunting again. Rivercacher Lynchburg, Virginia

  7. Actually, Hawkeye...I wanted to do it so -more- people could find me. I like the fact that Triffid is on Triffid's license plate. While my plate, which reads "batteau" (www.batteau.org to find out what it is) is similar to my nickname, I wanted to make it more similar, so people could identify me in the wild. Scott
  8. Hey guys, If I wanted to change my user name at Geocaching.com, does that reset my "found" count, screw up my placed caches, and make me look like a different person? Or does it just replace my old name everywhere it appears? Scott Lynchburg, Virga.
  9. Looks like a perfect opportunity to put the Cache In --> Trash OUT philosophy to work. Scott Rivercacher Lynchburg, Virginia
  10. I wholeheartedly agree...this type of cache is exactly what can get our activity banned from state parks...and every other park or piece of property in the country. Its tacky. Its litter. It draws attention to the cache...there are so many bad things about this. Scott
  11. Excellent idea, Hawkeye...I went and found a cache just after posting that message! Or was it just before? Oh well. >Oh, and I put some money into >www.geocaching.com ... so it can function ... so >I can go caching .... Me too. I gave my $3 for the month of March today. >PS ... Rivercacher ... Rev.War? No kidding ... I >belonged to a F&I War group when I lived in >Pa ... lot of fun. Yup, Gaskins' Virginia Battalion of 1781. www.virginiacampaign.org/gaskins
  12. Sorry, that should be "dividends", not "divends" Scott
