  1. Hey guys, I just upgraded to a Compaq iPaq 3955, which means that my three month old connector cable for the 36xx/37xx iPaq needs to go. I got the cable from GeorgeCo...a photo of it is here: http://www.georgecomm.com/images/ipaq.gif It works great...goes straight from the iPaq to the etrex...no connectors in the middle. Cable is about 36" long. I've got $23 in it...will accept best offer. Scott scott@wscottsmith.com Lynchburg, Virginia
  2. According to the Leave No Trace principles, it depends on where you are: * Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces -Durable surfaces include established trails and campsites, rock, gravel, dry grasses or snow. -Protect riparian areas by camping at least 200 feet from lakes and streams. -Good campsites are found, not made. Altering a site is not necessary. In popular areas: Concentrate use on existing trails and campsites. Walk single file in the middle of the trail, even when wet or muddy. Keep campsites small. Focus activity in areas where vegetation is absent. In pristine areas Disperse use to prevent the creation of campsites and trails. Avoid places where impacts are just beginning. 4. Got a cable from eBay that connects the two for about $15. MS Pocket Streets (using MS Streets & Trips as the base at home) provides me with street maps...Delorme xMap does the topos (using Topo USA 4.0 on the home PC as the base). The iPaq's color screen is great for this. I rarely actually use the PDA to locate the cache itself, but rather the general area the cache is in (to locate roads to get closer to the cache, etc.) Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  5. I've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Delorme Topo USA 4.0, and it has now been launched. The new feature that interests me the most is that, in conjunction with their xMap software, Topo USA will now work on a Pocket PC (I have a Compaq iPaq), and with a GPS on that Pocket PC. Has anyone tried this software yet? I'm looking for reviews before I drop the $100 for both programs. Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  6. "One would figure a seismologist would have figured a way to locate this without bothering with the cyphers long ago." The late famed Mel Fisher searched for this treasure a number of years ago..as I recall, they actually found an underground chamber...empty, I might add. Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  7. The following two caches may be affected by this wildfire/trail closing (you don't -have- to use the AT to access either one, but some side trails are off limits as well) James River Face Wildreness http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=5936 Devils Marbleyard http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=18647 TRAIL CLOSED DUE TO FIRE - CENTRAL VIRGINIA - June 13 - The A.T. remains closed for 10 miles from the James River (U.S. 501) south to Petites Gap (USFS 35, Blue Ridge Parkway Mile 71) due to forest fire in the James River Face Wilderness. Signs have been posted, and the U.S. Forest Service is providing shuttles to hikers. Containment of the fire — known as the Marbleyard fire — is not expected until June 18; fire updates and details are available from the U.S. Forest Service Fire Reports. http://www.fs.fed.us/fire/reports.shtml Scott Lynchburg, Virginia [This message was edited by RiverCacher on June 13, 2002 at 10:30 AM.]
  8. The D-Day Virtual Cache is in the general area as well. Our resident expert on the Beale Treasure here in Bedford County is Peter Viemeister...you can contact him through http://www.peterv.com Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  9. I used to work for a regional digital/analog carrier here in Virginia, and yes, phones without service can still make 911 calls (be sure to keep it charged, though!) One note: Be prepared to clearly identify your macro and micro location to the 911 dispatcher...911 calls via cell phones have been known to land in other counties, or even other states! 11. In this case, I like the low importance designation that mail from geocaching.com has. Geocaching.com is the only group/person who sends me mail with low importance, so it stands out tons better than the red exclamation marks that high importance mail carries. Scott Lynchburg, Virginia

  14. This question is only slightly related to geocaching, but here goes: On most hyperlinks to web sites that are external from geocaching.com, a new browser window is opened when you click on that link... How is that done? Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  15. How do you get them to work? :bmonkey: Lynchburg, Virginia
  16. This past December, the famous Triffid came to speak to my Scout group (Venturing Crew 1776, http://www.blackwatercreek.org/crew1776 [it'll be back up in a few days]) about Trail Building and the International Mountain Bike Association. He threw in a plug for geocaching at the end...I was intrigued! Now, 4 months and 37 cache finds later, I'm doing my best to spread the word to others! Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  17. I use Pocket PC 2002, which runs on my Compaq iPaq. My Garmin eTrex Venture connects to the iPaq using a custom cable that I bought on eBay for about $15.00. Right now, I'm only using MS Pocket Streets, which interfaces with MS Streets & Trips 2002. HOWEVER, I understand that the new Delorme Topo USA 4.0 interfaces with both Pocket PC and Palm platforms...will be purchasing that soon. Scott Lynchburg, Virginia
  18. Rather than using the light buuuubs (as my dad says it) to see whats new, I just use the "todays active topics"...but maybe I'll start looking for the buuuubs. Scott Lynchburg, Virginia

  20. Huh? Did I hear the "beer" word? Where? When? How Much of it? Good luck on your 100th cache guys...I'll be there sometime before the year is out Scott Lynchburg, Virginia

  22. Okay guys, I have a question. I just created a map on MS Streets & Trips that has several locations of caches (using Lat/Lon) that are displayed as "push pins". MS Streets & Trips uses the same datum as Geocaching.com Then, I loaded that map into my Pocket PC using the MS Pocket Streets program. The push pins are there, but they are not in the same locations that they were on the main program! I haven't measured, but they appear to be many hundreds of yards off! Any ideas?
