  1. Have you just tried to drag and drop the extracted file directly into the GPS file on the internal memory or SD card depending on what you use?. That is all I have ever done without using basecamp or GSAK and have never had an issue. You actually don't need either to load caches on your 64st. Also make sure you are not on the "show Found" on the cache page although I think that defaults to not found anyway.
  2. You have to figure at some point they will grow up and realize that they are truly idiots!!
  3. Things happen and sometimes it may take longer than expected. We had a couple for a few months because we thought we lost them on vacation. I messaged the owners and told them that I believe I lost them. Luckily sometime later we found them in another bag and they were not in the bag we lost. They were only marked as missing so we got them back out. I had a lady give me one that she had for 3 years. Basically a new cacher that quit for the most part and held onto it. I told her I would move it on and luckily the TB was just marked as missing. I have 3 right now that I picked up from MOGA 2016. I dropped one yesterday and plan to get the other two out soon. I don't do puzzle caches but I do look for established caches with a low muggle rate to put them in. Definitely no LPC's or guardrails even if they are big enough to hold the TB. I lost mine in vegas to a LPC muggle that was on the verge of 30,000 miles. I plan relaunch it here soon because I figure after two years of missing it is not coming back. My other one was picked up and I was told heading to florida, that was 5 months ago, Nothing since!!
  4. Yeah I have used any cable I can find with no issues on my Nuvi's and on my new 64st I apparently misplaced the original cable and have been using one that I found in my garage since then.
  5. Nah it's only been 24 hours. The person from what I can see has moved a ton of trackables and looks to be active so They should be in decent hands. I would give it a while before contacting them. They may wait until they drop them. If they are yours and if not you can take them out of the inventory I believe but I would wait to see if they log them.
  6. Sorry, but the moment I plug my 64s into the USB-Port I can access both, the internal Memory and the SD-Card. I can send files to both of them - no key to press... 1) I couldn't see a reason for that other than the larger space on the sd-card? 2) If you use the compressed file you can add more than 5k of caches without noticing any delay. DON'T use single GPX-Files. 3) Why? Never did, never had any trouble. ^^^I agree with this. As a new 64st owner I have had really none of these issues. I did remove the 250,000 preloaded caches just because i really don't need them but I have loaded several pocket queries to the 64 with little to no delay on start up. If you want delay's get a PN-40 LOL. I have sent both to the SD card and internal memory with no issues at all. The biggest thing I would say is don't make the mistake like I did and buy the ST because the topos are not that great and since I am new to garmin handhelds, had Nuvi's for years, I did not realize how many maps and how easy they are to get/ load so really your paying for 4 gig memory that's all.. I have just did the latest firmware update and have eliminated pages and stuff I do not need to make it a streamlined GPSr that I am slowly falling in love with. With the GPSfiledepot and Gmap OSM routables I feel I have a unit that should last for some time and does everything I need it to do. Wish it had a bigger screen but I am not big touchscreen fan so it is what it is.
  7. Not a whole lot you can do. For me I decided that I would test my original 2 and as many times as they have come up missing I decided I would not put out any more. When I first released it several years ago the same thing happened but this time no one logged it. It disappeared for 6 month's then all of the sudden showed up in a cache in west Virginia. The person, an seasoned cacher, forgot to log it on both ends and it was not until someone picked it up we found out where it was. Recently I relaunched this TB at the Ovarian cancer walk which is the theme of the TB. Someone grabbed it and said they would take it to florida and release it. Been 5 month's since that and nothing. It is a rookie cacher this time so I don't know what to say. This TB is honor of my deceased sister who battle ovarian cancer for 3 years. I am not saying that things have not happened and I have held a TB longer than maybe I should of but I would always respond to an inquiry from the owner and have always move it on when I had the chance. I have a couple I picked up at MOGA 2016 saturday and we have some trips planned this summer so we will move them on then. I also try to find well established caches to put them in which may take a little longer so that there is less chance for them to be muggled.
  8. I have a PN-40, and the PN-60 I use now is even better. But, alas, I can't really defend using it, and the problem of the Delorme specific cables failing is a real problem that can't be justified. I cringe thinking of the day I'll have to switch to some other kind of unit, but I know I'll have to when my PN-60 starts having problems. Now that Garmin owns DeLorme, it will be interesting to see what the future is for the PN-60. Will Garmin introduce a new PN device with some of the Garmin features or hardware? or will they just discontinue the series? Everything I am hearing it sounds like the PN series is gone. Just one more competitor out of the way for garmin. I think I read somewhere they were really interested in the in-reach system of delorme.
  9. I almost bought a PN-60 as they had them for 200$ on the delorme site but when I asked if they would be supported after the sale to garmin no one could give me a good answer. I waited for a while for an answer but heard nothing back. I did hear one rumbling that when the 60's sold out that would be it. I decided on the Garmin 64st which at first I hated it. Now after a month or so I am starting get it to the point where I really like it. With the GPSfile depot and Gmap OSM maps I have it set up where i like it. The big issue for me is the mark button because it is next to the quit button and I end up marking waypoints by accident. Even though the ST has 8 gig internal If I had to do it again I would go with the S version which is cheaper. The topos that come with it are garbage and are not routable. You have to pay big bucks to get the routable stuff from garmin so I am using the Gmap OSM maps. I have loaded them last night and done some testing and now my 64st is routable from what I can tell which is nice to use to get to a cache are if your not familiar with where you are. I will find out more this weekend as I think I am going to go to MOGA 2016 hopefully. We are not big event people but since it is right up the road from us we may go.
  10. Yeah welcome to the wonderful world of missing TB's. I sent out two years ago and both now are missing. One traveled overseas and 30,000 mile on it but was muggled in vegas. The other one has now been bitten by the one month cacher twice. I did the initial two to see how it went. After they have come up missing I decided I would just stick with these two.
  11. Originally a PN-40 and now a garmin 64st. My PN-40 was a work horse and did well but just getting old now. I may sell but not sure. The cable no longer works so you have to pull the SD card to load caches. The 64 has been a bit of a learning curve but the more I use it the more I like it. Not a fan of touch screens so that is why I went with it. If I had it to do all over again I would not get the ST just the S. To many maps out there for free. Basically I turned the 100K topos off because they are useless.
  12. There are plenty of maps available for free. I have a car GPS (nuvi) and handheld (Oregon600) and use OSM (openstreetmap) on both. The Nuvi has European maps + lifetime updates so "locally" I'm set but I took the Nuvi on holiday to Australia and used the OSM map there for car navigation. No problems whatsoever. My Oregon didn't come with maps (Oregon600, not 600T which has topomaps for extra $$)and I've used OSM maps locally and when on holiday in different countries. The same goes for my previous GPS (Garmin Colorado 300). Loading maps on a Garmin unit is a piece of cake + you can just download a new one every few months to have the most up-to-date maps. I agree with this 100% I have just bought a 64ST and now wish I would have just gotten the 64s. No need for the garmin topo seeing as they are not routable and have very little detail. I bought my 64 from jet.com because they gave an extra 30$ off plus a few few extra $'s for the way you register or something like that. In reality you only need a base map to geocache but having topos and street info is a plus. Most newer GPSr's are paperless and just basically drag and drop file in the GPX file. I was a delorme user for years but since garmin bought delorme I thought I would go with garmin since no one at delorme could answer me if the PN-60 would be supported after the the sale goes through. It has been a huge learning curve for me and when I first got the 64 I thought "I am sending it back", but now after a month or so of use, I am finding it to be a great unit and I am slowly getting it modified to my liking. Wish it had a bigger screen but not a fan of touch screens so it is what it is. As far as maps that is no biggie with garmin as I quickly found out. GPSfiledepot and Gmap OSM have everything you need to load great maps at little to no cost. If you use GPSfiledepot just remember to load my trails first and find the garmin folder it loaded in. Once you know that then just point any other downloads to that same folder. It is a bit of a learning curve but not to hard. With GMap OSM it puts it were you need it and then you just load it on the GPS from there. I am using garmin basecamp to load all of this. Hint is you install the maps with basecamp closed then open it and they will be there. In the end a GPSr is a great investment not only for geocaching but a ton of other stuff. Depending on your money situation will depend on what you can get. I believe you could get a 64s for around 230$ from jet.com is they are still doing the first time discount. As I am learning this unit it is becoming a great caching unit and look forward to years of use from it. GPSr is the way to go, for me the 64st is working great and has been out long enough that most of the bugs have been worked out.
  13. Yea some people just don't get it. I have a cache that had some decent swag in it, nothing to nice but decent. After a while it ended up with a shower cap and soap from a local hotel and business cards from local businesses. All the other stuff was gone. This was an easy cache to get to so I guess the these people thought it was ok to do . Recently it was muggled but even the muggles would not take the shower cap!!!! So now only the ones I put way out in the woods get the good stuff all others get the cheap stuff and this one is possibly being reduced to a micro so that it does not get muggled again. I have not made a permanent decision on that yet. The worst part was the log book, I had really good statements made about the log book and now it's gone. As far as what happened to you. I would say it was not the FTF only because he/she sounds like they have been around a while although that does not mean much either. Like us, we are not into numbers but quality. I have been caching over a year but am just now reaching a hundred. We are cachers that like to go for long hikes and not necessarily just run around and pick up P n'G's. We done a few PnG runs but only a couple times. Anyway sorry to hear about what happened but get used to it really. I have 24 hides and 4 right now disabled because they got muggled.
  14. I really have had no problems. Keystone is one of the reviewers that does my stuff in ohio and he always gets to it within a day or so, if usually not sooner.
  15. I have had a PN-40 for about a year and really like it. A bit power hungry but just bringing some extra NiMH batteries along does the trick. My sister has recently got a magellan GC and it is a nice little unit. The thing I like about the delorme which really makes up for the power consumption is the maps. $30 for unlimited maps which includes 1:24's topo and aerial imagery.
  16. I agree. I put a cache on OC.us exclusively and it sat for 4 months without a FTF. I was trying to give it the benefit of the doubt but just got tired of waiting so I archived it there and put it on GC.com. With in a day or so it was found and has been found many times since. I really have not been back to that site. The last time I did a search there was one cache listed in like a 100 mile area of my home. I guess cross listing is a good way of keeping saturation of caches down but if you only use one site then really you don't have to worry about it. Plus the OC site put the coordinates out with out you having to log in which I believe will lead to more caches being stolen.
  17. UPDATE!!! I am happy to say that after 6 month's this TB has been discovered in a cache called "Keys to Heaven" and no less on Easter Sunday. I guess this is a way for our sister to tell us she is doing fine!!! :D
  18. Well sadly a TB that was dedicated to my deceased sister who died of ovarian cancer, after I dipped it into a few caches, made it one stop to an event and now has vanished. Mary Beth's Ovarian Cancer Awareness Travel Bug It was placed in the event 3 months or so ago and I have contacted all logged participants and some remember seeing it and a few discovered it but still no luck. The thing that disappoints me it was lost by seasoned cachers. I thought I lost a couple trackables while on vacation(I did find them) so I know it happens but man I was just hoping this would make it farther than that. I know that's the risk and I am thinking of putting out the copy but I am holding out for a bit to see if it turns up. What I don't understand is why someone would want to keep them. I know I held onto a couple for longer than I probably should have but I still moved them on. It almost makes you not want to do it anymore.
  19. I had one (won it as a door prize). It was an Outdoor Products watertight box. It lasted 13 months. Condensation built up in the cache. The log was damp, and there was a thin layer of water inside the bottom of the box. It smelled bad, and the gasket looked a little moldy, although that may have been the damp foam swag disintegrating. So far I have had no issues but we have had some really cold weather here lately so I am going to check them again soon. That was one thing I wondered about them as far as cold weather. I only have 2 out and both easy access and 5 minutes from the house so I will be able to check on them to see if they hold out. If not then I will replace them with a lockn lock. I have a ammo can that I want to put out soon. I had an experience with a cache I found were the ammo can was washed down into a run off stream. It was half buried in mud and when we finally got it out it was bone dry. That really made me a believer in ammo cans. Probably worth the extra cost.
  20. I have sterlite containers that so far are doing ok. We had a bunch of ran and snow and so far they have held up. We will see how long that lasts. Miejers and JC penny sells lockn locks which seem to work well. At walmart in the camping section they have a clear blue container that is supposed to be shatterproof and waterproof. I have two caches that I am using these on and they really seem to be holding up well and are really waterproof so far as I can tell. They go for about 9$ I believe.
  21. Don't sell the PN-40 short. I have one and love it and it can be had for around 200$. I get 8 hrs out of NiMH batteries on a lacross charger and I bought the carrying case for 16$ at walmart.com so I always have a couple extra sets with me. Some sanyo enelopes and your set. Plus the Topo 9 and 2.8 FW and you really don't need much more.
  22. We as a family always go to find places to hike. One time we were hiking in a remote area and kind of wanted to farther but really had no way to know where we were at. So when we got back from our trip I decided to look up handheld GPSr's. As I was looking at the user reviews I kept seeing people say that this was good for geocaching or not good for geocaching. So I did what any interested person would do and googled geocaching. I found this site and figured out how to put a gps on my blackberry and found my first cache that was within 5 minutes of my work. Now the whole family is involved and it really enhances our hiking. Bought a PN-40 and have not looked back.
  23. My take on this is that if you need a specialized piece of equipment to find it then it should probably go the way of Wherigo and be it's own game. If every cache uses a chirp then you would be specifically targeting one type of GPSr maker which then only those with that type of GPSr could play. Didn't think that was what geocaching was all about. For me I will not be purchasing a chirp enabled GPSr anytime soon. Not in the cards or pocketbook. I have no problem with chirp caches I just think they need to be a separate game maybe. I also believe these will come up missing in large numbers and not only by muggles as we have seen has already happened. Cool idea all together though but I just think it will be to tempting for some not to take the chirp.
