What would REI do when they found out? Why would they be upset? One good reason is that they pay for the webserver and the internet time, and the webpage designers to create all those nice pages, and on and on. They own that information they post. If you printed a copy of REI's webpage for personal use, no one would care. But if you write scripts to take data from their pages to post on yours and post it for anyone to use...well, wouldn't you call that stealing? ...SNIP NWClimber

I think we agree here... but what we are asking for (and what I think I hear Jeremy working on) is something the end user can consume.

For example, I (being a cacher and a charter member), log into the goecaching site. I know I am going to be visiting some friends in say Cedar Rapids. I want to search on any cache within 100 miles and less than 6 months old (or logged as found within XX number of days... since I hate old and abdandoned caches). I put in my search criteria and get back 75 or so caches. I now want to download them into my GPS, no problem. However, I have to open EACH one to print it (and kill ALOT of trees) or save and massage the data to get into my Palm. ExpertGPS imports XML FABULOUSLY and there are XML browsers for my PDA. As a matter of fact, that is how I am working this now (I still have to cut and paste the cache description into the XML code). Seems like a good fit to me, one file and BAM! I am able to consume the service as an end user.

P.S. Jeremy, if you find yourself needing any help, look me up.

At a concert a few months ago, a parrot head friend of mine (who got me hooked) said Buffet was already doing it. He talked about it a bit on stage and was working on a song for it. My friend reports it was actually a bit of a parody.

  3. Have a CIGAR icon_biggrin.gif . Ok, hokey, I know....but do we have or would anyone like to help form a geocaching club in central Indiana?? I would like to show the Indiana DNR our wide back-grounds and our ecological concerns and care we take. I have some statements from the forums and the site iteself. I just think a united or organized local group would help our cause to get an official stance on our hobby with the state and then perhaps the national parks.

I hope to meet with the DNR officials in June/July and would like to present them with a plan of cooperation so they don't "lock us out" like I've read it happening in other areas.

    Any suggestions?

The park (national, state, local whatever) issues a geocaching permit after the hider submits a request. That entitles him/her to place a cache in an area defined by the park that is not a sensitive area. The park permit's cache number is posted on the .com site to show it's an sanctioned cache. Since the park limits the number of caches, the hider is protected from other cachers from "encroaching" in their area. After three months or as determine by the park manager, the cache must be removed to allow the growth to return any social trails to the envirnonment that may have occurred. The cache is archived on the web site.

The cacher gets his cache in parks that may not now allow caching now or may have considered stopping caching in the future, the environmentalists get they pristine forest, the public is served, nature is served.

Good job. I like that idea. I have a meeting being set up between myself and the state forester of Indiana, the Education director, and the property specialist. I requested this as a citizen of this earth, a tax payer, and a concerned former scout. I love this game and "cache in/trash out" everytime, but it is not enough. I have asked to discuss just this issue and now we are trying to work out a firm date on all our calendars. If you don't mind, I would like to use this idea as a starting point.

If one or two states start to take this seriously and do draft guidelines like this and see little in the way of ecological damage, then they can take this to the national conference. Let us educate the decision makers before they listen to those who are ignorant and loud enough to close this off to everyone.

As always, we must learn to crawl before we learn to stand and walk (and I am still learning how to fly).

  6. I have one travel bug that is based on the fact that the goal is always changing. While I will have to do this manually right now (the bug has not yet been released), I am trying to work with geocaching.com and am awaiting a response to see if I can call remote scripts from my server to produce the html text in goals section.

  7. What difference does it make? Religion (whichever one you worship) was created by MAN. Most beliefs are passed down through family. The texts that are taught from are based on stories told before the written word. Like many stories, they may have been embelished, they contained what were believed to be morals and taught right from wrong.

I love to geocache, but I do not want to open caches and find literature on any religion. This is not the venue to be discussing or preaching.

P.S. Before I get slammed with "sinner" and "godless", I am a believer in God. Life in itself is a miracle. However, I do not believe anyone is near evolved to communicate with him/her.

Great news, Jeremy! I especially like the XML aspect of it in that will enable some of us programmers to help you out and develop tools that you may not have thought of. Hey, you are good, but the collective minds are always greater than the one.

When can we expect to see a beta of this? Do you need any help developing it? I know I am not alone in saying thanks for what you have given us so far. We know you have alot on your plate, but if you do need help, just ask.

  11. I have read these forums and hear alot of requests in this thread and that one. I have not seen a thread polling the users (I may not have gone back far enough). In any case, here is one:

What portable format would you like to see the cache descriptions in?

  12. ....so if some of this repeats, forgive me.

I was trying to get a friend interested in Geocaching. He, like myself, is a desk jockey and is out of shape. I find this game/sport to be good exercise and suggested he try it (I'd have gone out with him, but he is now in AZ and I am in Indiana.) Anyway, as we were talking about it, he asked "What is to stop me from just logging that I found the cache when I did not?". I did not have a direct answer other than he was only cheating himself (on many levels). I also told him that doing so might also get him a reputation around the globe (since this IS worldwide) as a cheater. Well, he said he had no intention of doing it, but that there should be some way to prevent this. Other than the logs, we could not think of a way.

Here (lifting a tankard) is to all the honest cacher's in the world! May you always find your way back to your car!

More on the Trench Shovel. Locate catholes at least 200 feet(about 70 adult steps) from water or trails. With a small shovel or garden trowel dig a hole 6-8" deep and 4-6" in diameter. After use, cover the cathole with soil and disguise it with natural materials. If you are camping in an area for more than one night, widely disperse cathole sites. Though, it is far better in some environments to not leave the TP there, but to haul in out with you. So:

    DO:

    Take plastic bags

Pick up trash (including your own)

    Don't leave anything but footprints.

  15. ....about mirroring or copying the data off of the server. I am a subscriber, why should someone who has not paid get something for free when I paid for it? The data belongs to Groundspeak, yes?

What I suggest it that Groudspeak create a service that can be called upon via a RPC SOAP call where a ZIPCode (or STATE or Country) is submitted (as it is now on the main page) and a PRC or some other Palm compatible is produced and sent to the browser to be saved and placed in the PDA. Most of the coding is already done, the return would have to be formatted to be returned and that should not be too hard.

  16. As you can see, I am relatively new here. But, in following this thread, I figure I would chime in. I would think that with some of the talent that reside here, all Jeremy would have to do is ask and have more than enough volunteers to help him build a state of the art site. I heard mention of .NET, there is also JSP, and XML and even SOAP.

Being a web programmer myself, I can see a web-service solution and am willing to help out in any way that I can.

  18. My wife and I are new to this and were wondering a few things. Is there a simple way to download multiple pages for a certain area? For example, we will be traveling to Hawaii soon and would like to download all the cache's on certain islands. We are not just talking about the GPS cordinates, though (we do that through EASYGPS). We are talking about downloading the texts and descriptions into a RTF file or into a PDA. Is that capability there now, or in the works?

    Thanks,
