  1. After the last two weekends of caching, I've added a machette to my cache pack. icon_wink.gif I mean, I whole heartly agree with leaving no trace; but until mother nature agrees with that and cures my poison ivy, scratches from those thorny trees, the misquito bites (which reside in the middle of the poison ivy rash), the rash from the nettles, and the dizziness I feel every now and then from the snake bite, until SHE stops leaving traces on ME, I'll leave a few on her. icon_mad.gif That, or I'll just hunt down the cache owner who placed the cache in the middle of all of this. icon_biggrin.gif

(Note: I managed to avoid falling from the cliff table and removed the ticks before they bit, so I was not a total wreck.) icon_wink.gif

  2. ..."You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". Leading people to places like this might make them feel obligated; which, in my opinion, is not a bad thing but goes against the "commercialization" rule.

I've tossed around the idea myself of a "collection plate" type of cache for the poor, the needy, those suffering a great loss (families of who expecienced a sudden loss). However, I cannot find a way to do it and still stay within the rules of the game.

  3. If they give you something, give them something in return (a little advertising). If I, as a cacher, want to visit the sponsor, I will.

Here is a virtual cache that is on my list to avoid (only because I know what and where it is and what it is "promoting"). WOW! Look at That. This cache is "sponsored".

  4. Jeremy, et all:

    Or simply put

There are ways now to link into the API of some translation websites (through web services). Since this game is internationsal, would it not be nice to give your users the option of translating say a german page into english?

  5. Growing up in a small town was great. Our scout master owned alot of land including a rather large wooded area where we used to have weekend camps. In these woods is an old cemetery (dating back to the early 1800's, spanning the civil war time). The cemetary had been abandoned and overgrown then and the only access was a few social trails we scouts made and some animal trails, there was no road.

That was 20 years ago. The cemetary is still on the maps. In looking at arial photos, there is still no road to it. Our dear scout master passed away and some of his land has been sold (though according to his wife, they still own that portion of the woods). She, and her children, don't mind us going there, but she does not own the land surrounding woods anymore. This means no access or cutting through private property, as there is still no road to it.

Has anyone ever run into this type of situation? Ting and I are working on a themed cache for this cemetary. In Indiana, state law makes township trustees responsible for the upkeep of abandoned cemeteries. Should I contact them about gaining access? I have an idea to let the local scout group create a trail to it and clean it up. They could also catalog the headstones, if they are not already (they were not as of 20 years ago).

Anyway, what do you all think? Am I putting too much work into this? Is there something simpler? Do you think I am fighting a losing battle?

Actually, we are almost in that group. We have 60+ finds and have not hidden a single cache. It is not that we do not want to, we just want to find the right place. (We thought we had one place and were going to place a simple cache this week and WHAM, someone snuck in and placed one in the same park and area ahead of us!). Oh well, we have a few other places too. We are also working on three themed caches too, two of which I am seeking permission to place (one is in an abandoned cemetary and is deep in a wooded area surrounded by private property).

As for distributing prescription medicines in a cache, I challenge you to hide it and post it here. Make sure that you place a stash note in your cache. Make sure your name and address are on the stash note in the cache, in case it needs to be moved (just in case you put it a sensative area). Make sure you post the cache name here, I have some things I would like to drop off there.

  12. Ok...there are many of us out there who may argue this GPS model or manufactuer is better than that one. Well, we are not prejudiced. I bought a Garmin Etrex Legend to start playing this game, been using it since January and have been quite happy with it. Ting figured if we had two receivers, one would be better at weaker signals and averaging. She had been doing a little reading and found a great deal on Magellin Sport Pro. We set out this weekend using both.

One feature that she liked on my Etrex Legend that she cannot seem to find on her Sport Pro is navigation. Well, she does have it. Let me explain. When she says "Goto" a waypoint, it places a line on her map from the starting point to the end waypoint. The problem is, on my Etrex, the "start point" is my cursor. The line moves as we do, always changing the bearing and all. On her Magellin, the start point is stationary, no matter where we move, the line stays the same.

Our question is: How can we lock the start point so it tracks with the cursor?

    Thanks,

  14. ...person who crosses Ting's path with those intentions. She may be small, but as her daddy told me, dynamite comes in small packages. I've seen her mad and angry, look out!

However, I do worry sometimes when she gets stubborn about a cache and wants to go on, through the poison ivy and nettles. She never cache's alone, but there are times where we get seperated. That is where we used radios.

Anyway, I think you did a good thing.

I tried this morning after drying all night, and the screen was full of condensation and the unit turned on, but I couldn't shut it off! I had to take out the batteries! the Up and Down buttons are non-functioning (stuck) and so is the ENTER button. Basically it is broken. I have NEVER had it in the water, and I thought it would be fine...it was even in the GARMIN neoprene case. For something that supposedly can withstand 1M for 30 min., it didn't even come close!! Should I send it back to Garmin? OR take it back to Best Buy where it has an Extended Warr.?

This is not good that something that should be waterproof faired this poorly...

    Thanks!

Mine was soaked in the rain in Florida and worked fine. However, a friend of ours has a similar problem and after two days of drying, it still was not working. They called Garmin and a unit was cross-shipped to them. They even paid the shipping.

Well, I am not everyone, but I am VERY pleased with what you have done so far. As a solutions developer myself, I know how impossible it is to think of EVERY person's point of view. You have to shoot for the majority and usability. Good job, I think you have it. And it looks like you are willing to make some changes (and take other suggestions under advisement).

May I make another request, as far as query output format goes? The LOCation files are already XML and both EasyGPS and ExpertGPS ignore tags that are not part of thier package. Would it be possible to get the short and long description fields, the difficulty and Terrain fields, and the log fields into the LOC files too? Ebook is not a bad choice, but as you see, there are other users out there (Linux and MAC) and people who don't care for Ebook. If the data were in XML, I am sure one of us out here could write a XSLT to format it properly to be read by any palm browser. Just a thought.

    Keep up the good work.

  17. WOW! I stored a single query and got the results back in both formats. Very nice. I am going to have to map out (pun intended) a few more.

A few critiques on the ebook format, if I may.

First (Overall): I like it icon_cool.gif, but is there a way to put the license at the end, perhaps like "Appendix A". icon_wink.gif

Second (The Table of contents): Is there a way to let US (the users) select the order that they are returned in (with the default being alphabetical) when we create our search?? Even though the find works, if I am doing XX caches from location.... ah, nevermind, the find works fast enough. I would ask that ONE more thing be added and that is the location (state). For those living near a border, it might be important.

Third (Cache document itself): I like the HIDDEN ON date, could we move it below the title and also place a last logged date in there Total finds or a ratio of finds/other might be nice too, but that might be a server load unless it is a field calculated and stored in the cache record.

Forth (Cache document itself): Description labels (Short and Long). I know it is cosmetic, but can they be BOLD. Professionally, I tend to make all my labels Bold and the data simple text.

Fifth (Cache document itself): I like the icons on the cache page in the the logs and miss them here. icon_frown.gif Is there anyway to get those icons (images) here. Would that load things down too much? If so, are there "wingding" symbols that we can use?

Sixth (Cache document itself): Can we control the number of log entries returned? Some people, for whatever reason, may want none and we have found an occasion or two there the sixth log would have made the find easier.

These are just my opinions and suggestions. Do with them what you may. You all are doing a great job.

  19. My wife and I were talking about this on the way home the other night and wondered if Cache-owners marked their boxes.

If your cache container (ammo box) is not marked, what is to stop someone from "finding it", "taking it", and "reusing it as thier own"? There are some stolen and plundered caches out there. I've read some logs where authorities have picked them up, or that were considered abandoned, but these are few. What is stopping someone from snatching an ammo box and changing the contents and rehiding it, or even selling it on Ebay.

Now, we have seen a few with symbols and such on them and We both believe that most people are good, but there are a few bad apples. I am CERTAINLY not pointing any fingers here, everything is hypothetical. Ting and I will be hiding our first cache soon and had not thought about this until recently.

Geocaching can be addictive. While not a "slug", I was a coach potato (oh, Dan, is there an E on the end of that?). Anyway, my wife and I have gone out almost every weekend for the last month and I've lost 12 lbs.
