  1. I had a trackable placed in Roman road - Sutton Park 2 years ago. This Cache appears to be longer longer available. Does anyone know who owned this cache and what happened to the items contained in it.
  2. I published a cache recently which unfortunately was rejected because it fell within a SSSI area. This was pointed out to me by the reviewer. I work on the estate where this SSSI is located and the owner of the estate has given me full verbal permission to place the cache there. Is verbal permission suitable or do I have to supply written permission from the owner. islayhawk
  3. Geocaching is incredible fun. The thing that spoils it is the Cachers who take travel bugs and do not move them on. If Cachers does not think they can deposit the travel bug elsewhere - then why do they not leave it where they found it. I have one stationary since August and despite appealing to the Cacher they have failed to move it on.. They say it is the first bug they have found and do not know what to do with it. It is disappointing. islayhawk
  4. There are no signs etc at the car park. The car park is more a large laybye which is used by visitors to the beach down through the woods islayhawk
  5. You can do much better than hope. First let me say, please use something a little bigger than a micro if the area can support it. I hate following a micro trail to an Ammo Can (this is just my personal opinion and NOT a guideline - at least warn me if micros are involved even though it is listed larger) The first stage could have coordinates to a second stage. The second stage could have coordinates for a third stage. Eventually when the cacher has followed your very controlled guided tour, only then give them the coordinates to the final. Use exactly as many or as few stages as you need to accomplish that. Remember every physical stage of your Muli must maintain separation from any other physical cache placement in the area. But, within your own Multi there are no separation restrictions. So in the absence of to many other physical placements, you can actually have them follow exactly the route you determine is best. I have used it quite effectively to show cachers the best paths and the best views possible. I live in a location which makes it very unlikely that I will ever come across a multi cache setup by any other cacher, so I am very new to this. The car park is at the edge of a wooded area at the side of a single track road. From the cark there is a track down through the woods to a beautiful deserted beach which will be the main cache area. I do not want cachers parking in laybys close to the area and walking over fields to get to the cache. This is why I specically want them to park in this car park. As the initial cache will only contain the co ordinates of the main cache I assumed that a micro cache would suffice. islayhawk
  6. The car park is the start of the trail. It is at the side of a wood. The path leads from the park down through the woods to the area I want. islayhawk
  7. Dunno if I have the correct topic title. I want to setup a cache, however to get to it I want the Geocachers to follow a specific path to get to the cache area. At the start of the path is a small car park. Do I give co-ordinates of a micro cache at the car park which would contain the co ordinates of the main cache - and hope that they follow the path to the correct area (I hope I am making sense ) islayhawk
  8. Why do some Geocachers take a travel bug then not pass it on promptly. I had one taken on 4/6/11 and it has still not been passed on. I emailed the Geocacher after two weeks and he said it he would pass it on as soon as possible. I emailed again last week stating that if he couldnt pass it on then I would pay the postage to have it sent back to me so I could start its travels again - I never got a reply. Surely if a Geocacher has an idea that it might be some time before he can pass on a TB then he should leave it where it is. Or have the common decency to explain why he cannot pass it on. islayhawk
  9. Is there an acceptable time to hold onto a trackable before dropping it into another cache. islayhawk
  10. Are the rules for placing a tradional cache in the same area as a virtual cache the same as placing traditional beside traditional ie no closer than 528ft. Close to my home there was a tradional cache. However it disappeared and the owner made it a virtual cache instead because he cannot easily visit the area. I contacted him and he gave me permission to place a traditional cache in the area - however he wants to retain the virtual. Do I have to keep my traditional one outwith the 528ft boundary islayhawk
  11. I have just adopted a cache within the past week which was in big need of maintenance. It needed a new log, new container etc. I removed the old one but will not have the new one in place until the end of this week. Is it acceptable to make a log entry to that effect or does the cache have to be archived temporary islayhawk
  12. I recently adopted a Geocache. However geocachers looking for it can arouse the suspicion of occupiers of houses nearby. I would like to move the cache to what I feel is a more suitable site about 400mtrs away - is this frowned upon in the geocache world islayhawk
  13. Thanks everybody - managed ok thanks to you. The cache was in such a lovely location that it would have so unfair not to give the original owners credit for it. islayhawk
  14. I have adopted a cache because the owner moved from the area and can no longer maintain it. Does the original owners name stay on the cache profile as the holder of the cache - if not, how do I change it to my name. In the description I will give credit to the original owner. islayhawk
  15. Thanks for all the answers. A trackable was removed from one of my caches recently and is recorded as being 'grabbed' by a geocacher who has over 8000 finds. I would have thought that with a record like that, the geocacher must know the proper way to record a find. It was in the cache before the geocacher visited and it is now gone so I can only assume that he - like me me is not sure of proper terminology islayhawk
  16. I live close to a cache which is in bad need of maintenance. The owner states on the cache description that they can no longer maintain it and they would like someone close to take it over. However I have emailed the owner three times and there has been no reply. What do I do now. islayhawk
  17. Still learning all the Geocache jargon. What is the difference between Grabbing a trackable and retreiving a trackable from a cache islayhawk
  18. Not only that, you've got people stealing too: Do I take it from the above quote that leaving a Travel Bug is not a fair swap islayhawk
  19. Its very unlikely this cache was left out by a muggler.I live within 400mtrs of the cache.I pass it numerous times every day. I passed it less than two hours before a certain geocacher found it - and it was in its hiding place. It is a very quiet stretch of country road - on a Sunday morning. On my return the cache was sitting out in full view. Geocacher like that ruin the pastime for the rest of us islayhawk
  20. Gets you really annoyed to find a cache left in full view of the general public. Drove by a cache this morning and it was in its usual hiding place. Within 2 hours it had been taken out , a log made and then the cache left in full view. How long does it take to return it to its rightful place. islayhawk
  21. I have tried the Garmin in both modes ie NHEA and Garmin. Every time changing the mode on Memory Map to suit the Garmin. I have tried both a usb to serial adapter cable and a usb to serial plug adapter to use with the serial cable cable I have for the PC, but nothing seems to work. islayhawk
  22. Been having problems for a while trying to connect my etrex to my netbook. Works fine on my desktop on the serial port.. On the netbook with usb to serial cables etc it will give me my current position and satellite status on Memory Map. Problem is when I try to upload/download waypoints etc - it will not!. I have checked all settings etc. I suspect that it is a problem with a port. I think I read somewhere that the GPS needs a port number beteen 2 and 9. On my netbook all these ports are in use - I do not know what is using them!!Live too far away to take netbook to a dealership or computer wizard. Help!!! islayhawk
  23. No everything is reported as it is. It shows the virtual Com port as being com9 and that is what I have setup memory map with. I find it peculiar that it worked once on the laptop with Windows xp but did not work again. islayhawk
  24. I use a Garmin Etrex. Worked fine on my Desktop with serial connection (homemade cable) However! that changed when I got myself a laptop. I got a usb to serial connector and drivers. Loaded the drivers ok but will not recognise the Garmin. It did once! and I thought I had managed it. However the next night all I get was messages such as - unknown Garmin, RS232 string problems etc etc I use Memory Map for placing and locating caches etc. I run Win xp. The fact that it managed to transfer data once is throwing me. The ports are ok and I have tried different settings in the Interface menu. Anyone got any ideas - I have trawled the Web looking for an answer islayhawk
  25. I would like to put a tradional cache in an area where there is at present a virtual cache. The owner of the virtual has given me permission and has stated that he thinks it should be ok. The virtual cache co-ordinates used to be a traditional cache but it has disappeared years ago. What is the ettiquette behind placing a second cache and if it is ok - what distance should I keep between the two caches. I am very new to caching and I do not want to offend islayhawk
