  1. I am lamenting on the fact that I bought a GPSr with crappy maps. What use is an inaccurate map? If you have a Garmin most people seem to agree you shouldn't use the maps...and they pay money- real cold hard cache for maps that are very inacurate...more so than other cheaper GPS recievers that come with free maps that show where the cache is and don't have a stupid "circle of unacuracy."
  2. How come I can use the maps on my Cobra to go right to it? Only the Garmin maps are way off here on a major interstate. I have 3 GPS recievers and the garmin is the one I will use for trac-logs...Nothing else- especially close cache hunting or placing - it really sucks at that.
  3. Garmin base maps have proved to me to be highly inacurate. If they can't even get the position of a major interstate highway right how do you expect their other maps to be any better? IMHO- junkit... Garmin users have suffered here (GCH224)
  4. The basemap that came with my map-60 showed the cache clearly on the East side of Interstate 5. When I got close the cache was really on the other side of I-5 300+ feet away. Do what I did and get a Cobra. No more problems like that and all the buttons still work after 3 yrs. Plus you get SiRf and an SD card slot And maps that Garmin will charge you $500 for. (Edit) Put this cache into your GPSr and then tell me what side of I-5 it is on...(GCH224)
  5. Without question it has to be Styx's "Too much time on my hands."
  6. At $250 this gpsr looks interesting. It has modes for driving- off roading- and marine use. Wouldn't it be sweet to have 1 gps for car boat and caching? Anyone using it please let us know what you think.
  7. I call my Cobra 1000 "Ol Blue" and my old explorist 200 "Yeller" and lastly I call my Map 60 "Junker" or "POS" As in "Hand me the Junker will you...I need to get a good track-log for this hike."
  8. If the hider of the cache dosnt check the coords by Marking the spot and then hitting Goto, the coords can be way off. I can get accuracy of about 6' by doing this. Often the GPSr will bring me to a spot 20' to the West. I will then subtract a few points from the West coords and try again till it brings me right to the cache. Every cache hider should do this. Also keep your GPSr ON between caches. Happy Caching!
  9. I use a Mountain bike, little electric scooter, 90cc scooter, KDX 220 dirt bike, 250cc Quad, 07 Malibu and an old 03 Ranger with 140k miles. I pick the apropriate vehicle and have never been stuck. I cache in the Carissa Plains, Ca where we have many dirt roads- some 40+ miles.
  10. I am caching using a Treo 700wx . I have no other Internet connection. Anyone know how to upload pic's taken W/ phone's camera?
  11. You gotta be kidding me? I have a 512 SD card in my Cobra 1000 and a ton of detailed maps intalled- hardly scratching the surface...Really sorry for you guys trying to use Garmin for accurate cache hunting/placement.
  12. I've got about 50 caches hidden and the majority are ammo can- first aid (metal military boxes) One of my hides is a HUGE 20MM ammo box(GCN1CM) stocked with $50 worth of goods- most people say it's the biggest cache they have ever seen. Another cache(GCRX6M) only has items of value- no key rings or free 'things' that you get in the mail. Some of these started as cheapo film cans or tupperware containers but my goal was to have all caches hidden with sealed metal boxes. My caching area is pretty remote, so those work the best. But I've still got the dreaded film cans on hand if need be.
  13. I was having that trouble a few months ago also. I found it may take some time for the picture to "go thru" You can try to refresh the page by hitting F5 after uploading the picture is complete- Or click "View Listing." Once I tried to upload a picture "unsuccessfully" about 4-5 times- the next day I found all 5 of the same picture on the log- deleating them can take some time too...perhaps someone else can explain the lag-time better than me. BTW I'm using slow dial up connection.
  14. Everyone seems to agree that you need some kind of "props" like a clipboard. Me I have at least 2 GPS recievers, a Palm pilot, digital camera, and a cell phone. You can play games on the Palm if you need to wait out a muggle- Take pictures of the area- MOST IMPORTANT to me is the cell phone- I'll stick that to my ear and walk around slowly to zero in on the cache- No body pays attention to a guy with that much on-person electronics- obviously a computer geek. Clip board is a great idea-
  15. Almost as good as an Ammo Can? I certainly doubt that- I've seen what happens to most plastics after exposure to the Suns UV, ozone, and other nasties. In a hot dry climate I could see an Ammo Can lasting 30+ years- possibly a lot longer. No tupperware plastic could ever come close to lasting that long! They also seem pretty expensive when You can get an ammo can for the price of three of them. I like the "First Aid" boxes from CheaperThanDirt.com
  16. For only about $26 more, why not get the 210 that comes with a usb cable. That way you can download the caches into it without having to manually enter each coordinate. I messed up the URL for the Explorist 210- Try Tiger GPS or just do a search for the 210 I found it somewhere for $156 There are tons of opinions in "GPS & Software" of which units are best.
  17. Oh no! I just ordered the 700! I take it that the 700 dosn't run the Palm Os? So I'm still going to have to cary my PDA too...dang I better go and cancel that order and get the 650.
  18. Thanks a bunch for your help! I'm going to get the Treo since I'm assuming you can also have CacheMate on it
  19. The match cans are good and available at a lot of stores- try spraying them with black "Vehicle Undercoating" spray. $3 at K-mart. It's a flexible ruberized coating- also works good on tupperware and glass jars. BUT one of my best cache hides cost nothing at all and still drives people crazy- it a used 12 Guage shotgun shell with a bagged log sheet. It is close to my house so I check it a lot- people hardly ever put it back right- needle nose pliers not required if put back right with small black wire tie around log sheet and folded back over the open end for an easy grab. Also cheap are the "Hide A Key" rocks. they look pretty fake but try painting them with epoxy and then sprinkle with sand- very hard to spot in right placement.
  20. I'm moving to a place with no internet access- but I still want to continue geocaching. Will a Black Berry or Treo cell phone be able to access the GC web site?
  21. The map60 seems to jump around and dosn't do so good under tree cover. I also have at least 2 DNF's due to it's very inacurate base map. I hear all base maps are inacurate but never had a problem untill I got the 60. I also never had "coords seem to be off" comments after 50 caches hidden- untill I started using the 60- I still take multiple readings and average out the best- But the map60 seems to do very poorly with it comes to close cache hunting- especially under heavy tree cover.
  22. Check out this cache where I had similar errors with the Garmin Base Map that showed bogus info and resulted in 2+ miles hiked for a DNF. Here is the cache where I had problems with the Garmin maps; Lost Hills Treasure (GCH224) http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...36-0a4f2122b0c8 This section of the freeway is prefectly straight. If they can't get it right here...i don't know...I wish I used my old reliable GPSr and left the 60 in the truck...maybe someone would have ripped it off.
  23. I'll give you $15.00 for that P.O.S. Map60. Sounds like I'm being more than generous to hear you tell it. I guess I was expecting more from the map60 than it can deliver( like accuracy for example) I'll keep it for a back-up unit if some kids happen to want to help in the cache hunt- me, I'll stick to my new Cobra1000 (which also has it's flaws) and my old yellow Exp200. I would sell the new map60 for the right price...Thanks.
  24. The Palm Z22 can be had for under $100 and with Cachemate ($8) you can download .gpx files to it using GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) Other people like the older Palm PDA's you can get really cheap sometimes on e-bay. They have a serial cable rather than the USB of newer Palm's. Getting a premium membership with gc.com helps them keep the sport going and growing. They have added new features since I joined a while back.
  25. Here is the cache where I had problems with the Garmin maps; Lost Hills Treasure (GCH224) http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...36-0a4f2122b0c8 Edit- this area of the I-5 is pretty much perfectly striaght for miles and miles...
