  1. Have you configured mapsource to send via the serial vs usb port? Did you select which maps you want to send? Have you tried sending just waypoints to your legend? Did you get an error message when you tried? If so, what was it?
  2. There are some good ones down there, but Isabel caused some to get archived. I would highly recommend a day trip to Ocracoke. It's a great place, and there are several good caches to do.
  3. I have the same configuration, a 60cs and a tungsten e. Unfortunately, there is no way that I know of to hook the two together. Even if you had a pda that could be hooked up to the gpsr, it would still not be possible to transfer mapsource maps from the pda to the gpsr. The link only allows the pda to receive coordinate data from the gpsr. It does not allow the gpsr to receive data from the pda. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is how it works.
  4. The star shows the location of the coordinates that were entered, but the map shown on the cache page is small and is not detailed enough for anything more than a general idea of the location. You can click on the links provided in the cache page to get more detailed maps. These maps also provide a mark to indicate the location of the coordinates.
  5. I started caching with a legend, and frequently found myself using a compass to orient the gps when zeroing in on the location. I also remember walking in straight lines, trying to get the gpsr to point me in the right direction. I recently got a 60cs, and the built in compass has eliminated the need for either of these methods. I am very pleased with it.
  6. One thing that you will lose is the preloaded marine points of interest database, but this can be downloaded from the Garmin website if you choose to reinstall it at a later time.
  7. You cannot transfer the gpx file directly to your palm. It has to be converted to palm format first. You do this either by running cmconvert or gsak. Either of these programs will create a palm file and set it up to be hotsynced to your palm. Once this has been done, hook up your palm to the pc and do a hotsync. After that, the next time you run cachemate on your pda, it will add the incoming records to the database.
  8. Try double-clicking on a couple of caches in your GSAK list and look at the cache page to see if the logs made it into the GSAK file. If they are there, check when you export the file to make sure that the cache log setting is set to 10.
  9. Make sure you are looking in the "past log" section and not the "log" section. The log section is for you to make your own personal notes of your finds, and is not the same as the past log section which shows the online logs that are included in your pocket queries. If that is not your problem, it is possible that you have downloaded pqs in loc format instead of gpx format.
  10. I tried to get Best Buy to pricematch a Vista based on a Walmart.com printout and they refused. They said it had to be available in a local store at that price, not just on the internet. I guess it just depends on the clerk. Why not just order it from Walmart.com? Not sure if the rebate would still work on an internet purchase, though.
  11. First, you have to be a premium member to get gpx files. Since you are one, you should be able to. Just go down to the "In the format" line near the bottom of the pocket query edit screen and select gpx instead of loc. You can download individual gpx files from the cache page also. (If you aren't seeing the gpx option, make sure you are logged on).
  12. Direct sunlight will definitely cause the rubber gasket on an etrex to come unglued, as described above by blocko. I would cover it up at the least.
  13. That would be great. I looked in my Legend in Setup (and elsewhere) and can't see how to do this. Can you point me in the right direction? Go to the main menu and select the system menu. Then select the drop down menu (left button in the upper right corner), and select "owner information." Make sure that you have the latest firmware upgrade (v. 3.6). Early firmware versions do not have this feature.
  14. The legend and vista ship with the cable. Other etrex's do not.
  15. Sounds like you're importing LOC files instead of GPX files. LOC files only have limited waypoint information. GPX files, on the other hand, have full descriptions, last five logs, etc. If you are not a premium member yet, become one, use pocket queries, and make sure the GPX button is checked on your PQ generator. jinx
  16. Sounds like you are downloading the .loc file instead of the .gpx file which contains the additional info.
  17. I can't get that to work. The list does move, but it seems to jump to random places for me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what. The character buffer for scrolling that way clears after a couple seconds of no characters being entered... if you're entering multiple characters slowly, it sees them as separate searches. That and/or incorrect entering/interpretation of Graffiti characters could cause it to do what you're seeing. I have noticed a problem with this feature also. In particular, whenever I enter an i, k, or t, or x (any letter requiring a second stroke with the stylus) cachemate always takes me to the L's. I have tried repeatedly to make sure that it is not a character entry problem, but I cannot get cachemate to recognize these letters when searching a list no matter what I do. I have not experienced the same problem in any other palm application or in other areas of cachemate. I am running Palm OS v.5.2.1 on a Tungsten E. Anyone else have this problem?
  18. I sent my legend in with the typical problems with the joystick, screen, and rubber gasket, and they replaced it with a brand new one. Got it back in 8 days. It was out of warranty, but they covered it anyway at no charge. Excellent service.
  19. I really love the 60cs. The autorouting, color screen, increased memory, usb port, antenna, size, and geocaching mode are all great. I used a legend for 2 years and was a great gpsr also, but the 60cs takes it to a whole new level. Make sure you get City Select in order to make full use of the autorouting.
  20. This requires a little more work, but if you use GSAK, you can filter caches along an arc or within a polygon that you configure by entering waypoints. It's not to hard to copy the waypoints from your mapping software for this purpose. Once you have entered the coordinates, you can specify how far on either side of the arc that you want to include. Like I said, it's a little more work, but I have found this to be very helpful for trips. There is also a way to do it using MS Streets and Trips. There are several other threads that discuss how to query along a route.
  21. Wouldn't it be easier to upload your waypoints from your GPS-III to mapsource on your pc and then download them to your 60cs? Do you have a cable to connect the GPS III to your PC?
  22. The owner information can be edited by clicking on the owner information line which is on the drop-down menu on the system page.
  23. I wonder about this. Is it 500 or 1000 waypoints? My book on page one say's 500. On Garmin.com it say's 1000. The legend originally was designed for 500 waypoints, but a firmware upgrade allows it to hold 1000. Even if your manual says 500, make sure that you have the latest firmware version 3.6, and it'll take 1000. There's a lot of other undocumented features that have been added through firmware updates that won't be in your manual, such as the owner information screen and battery type selection.
  24. The 8% memory indication has nothing to do with the map memory. I believe it has to do with tracks, waypoints, and routes. Like CT&J said, mapsource on your pc will indicate the size of the maps selected before you transfer. Be sure that the autorouting box is unchecked. You will be able to store a lot more maps on the legend without it, and the legend doesn't support autorouting anyway, so you won't need it.
  25. Actually, you can log an unlimited number of finds for the same cache, but it is generally considered acceptable to only log one find per cache, and log subsequent visits as notes. The exception would be some event caches that I have seen where the owner allows a find for each temporary cache found at the event. I have also seen caches that have been rehidden in a new location close to the original location where the owner will state that it is appropriate to log a new find if you find it in the new location. I'd rather see these archived and a new cache started, but it's not always done that way. When I first started, I logged a couple of caches as found more than once because I didn't know any better. I later went back and changed the subsequent finds to notes.
