  1. Greetings, My wife decided to try her hand at designing a geocoin (no intention of making a profit, she just loves geocoins and wanted to try her hand at one...) It's the "Ceilidh Coin" named after one of our Scarlet Macaws. So, given that we don't entirely know what we are doing, and having got the initial artwork completed we thought that we would ask if anyone has any constructive advice... The front... The back... She would like to put the tracking information on the rim. So, does anyone have any useful comments? Thanks, Zwack
  2. I don't know how it's happening, but mine was stamped "Multnomah County"... But that would mean that the mystery coiner was local. I suspect that they are being sent out somehow, and aren't being postmarked. Then at the destination they are either being hand cancelled (a pen mark is usually considered sufficient) or marked with a postmark from the destination. I guess it will remain a mystery. Z.
  3. Yup I'm sure it does.... I'm not sure what it counts for, but thank you for the laugh. Z.
  4. I would put on it "Not to be used for climbing"... It's more direct, and is hard to misunderstand. "Do not use this item for climbing" also works. Either way you want to make sure that the item is clearly marked as a novelty item that happens to share a shape with a piece of climbing equipment. Replacing that with a non-warning is probably a bad idea. Otherwise the English looks good to me. Z.
  5. I was so surprised at finding a padded envelope in the mailbox from myself, to myself that I called my wife (on the phone) from the end of the driveway to tell her that something had arrived in the mail that she would love. We received number 035 (with a loon on the return address label) and the main address label peeling off. Fortunately our coin was still inside and I am so glad that I got to see the back. Yes, my wife confirms that I am indeed a loonatick. This has to be the BEST coin I've ever had in my hands. My first mystery coin, and it is SO pretty. My wife collects geocoins, and so this one will be added to her collection. Most of them are nice, but this one is special. Thank you very much mystery coiner... Z.
  6. No letter here... I guess it doesn't matter what I believe. Z.
  7. This thread isn't dead... I'm waiting for a particular coin to arrive before I send that out to NCFabFive... There are currently three more people on the waiting list... Hurlmon QuiltInNana Davvvy Anyone else ready to pay it forward? Z.
  8. Amen. "Collectible" makes it sound like the finder is welcome to collect it, which of course, is not true! And if you read the knowledge book article on it it explicitly states that collectible coins can be added to their collection by ANOTHER player. If you can't collect it when you find it then why can you add it to your collection? The only real way to know what this does is to a) try it, or ask the powers that be. Z.
  9. I don't know anything about making geocoins, or whether my submission is even possible, but I'm going to throw it out there for consideration, anyway. I think the spiral design in the middle of both sides, and the little one at the top of both sides should glow. I don't know how coins are made. Heck, I don't even know how to make the "key" that you mention. I just like the color combo--it's the same one I have in our living and dining room :-). So without further ado, here's my submission. Thurus Ice Cream Parlor :-): There are only 4 colors at work--yellow, purple, pink and peach. The centers and the little spirals on top are showing as the same yellow color as the rest, but they should be glowing, while the rest of the yellow color should be translucent. Edit: Plating in satin nickel if it can't be in the lavender/purple color. Purple, pink and peach colors are opaque. I still don't know if any of this is even possible. Maybe not, looking at pros' submissions. Still, it's worth giving it a try from my end :-).
  10. Couldn't get to Geocoinfest to get a White Wolf. Lucky enough to find him on Ebay, though. He arrived today. BEAUTIFUL! I'm so happy I got one of the originals. I've been watching this thread from the beginning, and wanted one badly. I'm happy, now :-).
  11. In that case the knowledge books article needs to be updated... "Can Be Collected Status Types Collectible The coin may be collected by another player. You will receive an email when a trackable you own has been added to a collection." I read this as saying that another player can add a coin that you own to their collection if you have set it to be "collectible". This is only true for activated coins because you can't set your preferences on a non-activated coin. If you don't explicitly set Collectible to yes then it is NOT collectible. Now if someone wants to activate a coin, give me the information, and set it to collectible we can see if I can add it to my collection even though it belongs to you. And if this concerns anyone then please send me the physical coin as well... Otherwise, once we've tested then I will remove it from my collection and you can have it back... Z.
  12. Well, it looks like the definitive answer is here... Knowledge Books Article If it's marked as collectible then it can be collected by another player. If not then it has to move from cache to cache. Your collection and your inventory are another aspect. If it's in your collection then you won't see it when you log a cache, but if it's in your inventory then you will be offered the choice of visiting a cache or dropping it there as well. Z.
  13. There is an option that you can set on a coin that you own. If you say it is not collectible then people cannot move it into their own collection. If it is, then presumably they can. I would hope that only coins that are explicitly marked as collectible can be moved into your own collection. As far as the physical coin, whether activated or not, many people do collect them. Z.
  14. Greetings, I am planning my custom made geocaching bag at the moment (one of my other hobbies is leatherwork)... I have a Waterlily Netsuke geocoin which I was thinking of using as part of the closure. If I do that you won't normally be able to read the tracking code. However, I was thinking of carving a logo into the bag and carving the tracking code onto the bag itself. This wouldn't be a virtual as the coin would be right next to the code, nor would it be a proxy, as it wouldn't be released into the wilds instead of the coin. The coin would be kept with me, and the bag, but could be discovered by any geocachers that I met along the way... Thoughts? Z.
  15. So, because you disagree with someone else's choice then rather than just toss the "fake piece of paper" in a cache you are going to destroy it. If you find a cache that you don't like do you destroy that too? By the way how do you make a fake piece of paper? Z.
  16. Oh, I might be. : ) I'll take a stab in the dark. The acorn among the maple leaves and the rose among the water lilies could have any number of meanings, but they seem to indicate one lone thing being out of place among a number of things which all belong together. Is Jakalgirl the rose and the acorn? Does she feel out of place? Indeed... totally in the dark. The Rose is not the one lone thing out of place... Look carefully and you will see that it is tethered to an underwater cache. So clearly the Rose is like Jackalgirl... It leads you to the goal you seek... (OK that's obscure enough... now to explain... My wife is considering designing a geocoin, and so all of the useful information that Jackalgirl has posted in this thread will be of use to her. ) Z.
  17. Probably for the same reason that the Water Lily Netsuke has a rose on it... I'm saying nothing more, but you might want to look closely at it... Z.
  18. I have released three geocoin proxies into the wild... All three of them were handmade approximations of the real coin, made with shrinky dink so that they have some substance to them. If you consider these proxies (with proxy in the title) as the real coin then you will be disappointed. If however you consider them as a handmade, decorative object in their own right then you will not be. The difference between these and the originals? These are lighter, and have a bit more character. After all, if I tried to copy one of them again, it would still come out slightly different. Don't like them, don't move them. Don't care, then move them or not as you wish. I never go after caches just because there is a trackable in there because in my experience they could have been picked up and not logged, earlier that same day. It happens, I don't worry about it. But then I don't go after FTFs either because I'm not bothered... So, we don't all play the game the same way, but the important thing is to enjoy yourself doing it, not worry about how other people are playing. Z.
  19. Reservation in... So how do we get to be one of the Random Cointest winners. Z.
  20. Geocaching in Lincoln City Another Oregon one you don't have yet... Their latest event is planned for October with another new coin being unveiled... GC2BCB2 Find your treasure in Lincoln City Oh, and that is the link to the Estacada challenge. The 10th Anniversary coin itself says Birthplace of Geocaching on one side next to "City of Estacada, Gateway to the Clackamas" and on the other side says "Oregon's MT. Hood Territory www.mthoodterritory.com" Z.
  21. It worked!!! Unfortunately (for you) that means that I won't be sending it your way... But nice try GATOULIS. Z.
  22. Well, if you don't mind waiting for me to get the coin then I don't mind paying it forward to you... With any luck it will arrive at your location (somewhere in North Carolina)... But it might be several weeks before it arrives by mail here (I'm going to guess late October at the latest). If you are willing to wait until I receive it then I will adopt it over to you and release it. If someone else is ready to send now then I can wait... Z.
  23. Well, I have a coin reserved to adopt out now and there is nobody waiting for one. I'm hoping it will arrive soon (it was pre-ordered... I'm just waiting now)... So... Is there anyone still waiting"? Z.
  24. I see that one of each type is up for sale on Ebay already. They're lookin' good! I think I like the white wolf, best :-).
