  1. It seems odd that *now* you're asking about a fundamental guideline. And it seems to take this topic out of the realm of "Getting Started". B. Yes m8, I get the point! I made a mistake and I'm here asking for advice on correcting my mistakes, yes I should have read and understood all the guidelines.. do you really need so many posts in this thread stating I mucked up and should have known... sigh! Lesson learnt!
  2. I didn't have placement Issues with those (5 caches) that I posted a few years back, However I know for future and will be more careful when placing my caches I'll Archive a couple and get the other two published. Thanks for all the replies. P.s has it Always been >528ft or was it ever set at >500ft some years back ?
  3. Yesterday I placed and submitted 4 caches to be reviewed and published, all 4 were rejected because they didn't follow "Guidelines". I was under the impression caches had to be about 500 feet apart, however this was just a simple suggested guideline and not a strict law.. Anyhow, I really am not bothered to go and find new placements for my caches so plan to just publish 2 of them and retrieve back the other 2 caches. How do I delete the two caches I don't want so I can resubmit the 2 I want to keep ? Just out of interest, one of my caches was 495 feet apart and the other was 438 cheers
  4. Rather than start a new thread, I Thought I would ask this question here Would it be possible to set up a Recurring $10 3 month membership then cancel the recurring bit so I'm only paying the $10 for 3 months worth of premium or am I tied to some kind of contract ? Handy for if I only want to do a few weeks caching over the X-mas period.. Thanks.
  5. Someone feed the hamsters Struggling to do anything on geocache.com since the site maintenance
  6. Placed my order last night and got a "your item has been shipped" email this morning, chances are it could be here tommorow or monday.. I'm upgrading from an Etrex H cant wait tbh
  7. Thanks :-) I should have said, it's for a Garmin 62s and at £237 delivered I thinkn that's an amazing price! I have read through the reviews for the site and can now order knowing it's a real site with some great feedback. Thanks again Edit: Handtec are doing the same device for £245.33 delivered.... anyone have a voucher code ?
  8. We try to be very cautious when ordering stuff online... Just wanted a bit of heads up really, has anyone used this site to order before ? http://www.pentagongps.co.uk Thankyou.
  9. Happened to me once. I was placing some caches in an area that showed no caches on the map... I found a great spot for one of my containers but as I reached under to make sure it was a safe spot I found a cammo bag with a great cache in it, full of goodies... It turned out to be a puzzle cache that I had tried working out and had given up on months ago!
  10. I like the idea even though I do not own a metal detector. Placing the cache without burying it would be a task in itself but If that was overcome then why not ? It's not much different to needing climbing gear, ladder or even a boat! As long as the cache description was worded and rated correctly then I say go for it Good luck.
  11. oh wow! I was expecting a nope limited to 1000 and thats it... Really want one now. Thanks
  12. We might upgrade our trusty little E-trexH to something better soon so we are looking for a better device I have a question about storing waypoints on the 60csx. I have read it can store upto 1000 waypoints. What I would like to know is, can I put multiple banks of 1000 waypoints on the SD-card and choose which bank to load at a time ? I hope it works like that as it would be great storing 1000 local caches to home, 1000 along a route then another 1000 at my destination (holiday etc) then selecting what database to load without having to connect it to a pc one last question, whats a good price for a second hand 60csx in uk ? Thankyou.
  13. We recently just hid our first caches at around 400 finds. 25 seems like a good number.
  14. I would suggest something like an Garmin Etrex H. It has no maps and some limitations but can be got cheap, especially second hand. It's robust, splash proof unit and does the job perfectly. just factor in the cost of a data cable with this as manually inputting gps coords is a bit of a pain. The amount you wish to spend also reflects on what uint to suggest
  15. You can install coords to the Etrex using the cable by just clicking the geocache on the map page and selecting "Send to GPS".. you will have to install a Garmin browser plugin but thats all (The browser should prompt you when you first try to send a waypoint) Once and if you become a premium member you will be able to download multiple cache coords at once. and the software you want to look at with that is G.S.A.K http://www.gsak.net/ Welcome to Geocaching, It's fun and very adictive P.S I would recommend taking the etrex and the phone when you first go caching, I would expect the Etrex to be a bit more accurate.
  16. I'll recommend this too! infact I tried the stereogram from the link you gave and had the resulting coords in seconds! I only use this software as I have a lazy eye an am unable to see anything in stereograms.
  17. Using a car GPS will be a very fustrating experience. We started using one to geocache, after a second day out with it we just gave up and went home. I would suggest 2x units. used car gps's can be got fairly cheap on ebay, then spend what you have left to get yourself a proper GPS for geocaching. GSAK will allow you to export caches to a POI (point of intertest) file so that you can see where caches are on the car gps and use your geo gps for pinpointing.
  18. Our view on DNF's.. If we feel that we have put in enough effort into finding a cache and we still cant find it after reading previous logs, description and hint then we will log as a DNF. There is no way I would even consider logging a DNF if I haven't been twice or feel that we gave a worthy look for it. I think 5 of us searching GZ for upto 30 mins would sufface a DNF. Even though we haven't put any caches out ourself, we can see how fustrating DNF's can be on cache owners. It does cause a knock-on effect and theres not a lot that can be done about that as I think most people would be put off spending 30mins+ for a cache that has had 4 previous DNF's over a couple of months or so.
  19. Our objective started as finding a few caches around our many local lakes... but obviously once we were hooked at caching it escalated to as many caches as we could find within a 10 mile circle of our house. We try to clear areas then move onto the next, but have slowly started moving away from our area to do the series caches further out, we love them! We don't really want to set an objective as such, we just want to go on and on....
  20. Ah brilliant !! Edit notifications, not really played with them untill now just gets better & better thanks
  21. I have added a second email address to my account but cannot find any information as to how it works.. Do all E-mails sent to my (primary) address also get sent to my newly added second address ? if not, where can I read up what it actually does thanks
  22. We started out using a car GPS, it was a binatone carolla running tomtom. We got so fed up with it sending us all over the place near to the cache we just gave up and went home! entering the cho-ords at each cache was a pain too! We now have a cheapie Etrex H and it's very accurate!
  23. The way we was geocaching was to pick an area to visit for the day then singularly add each LOC locations straight into our Etrex H via serial cable. We then had to write all the information that we felt we needed on paper. (now using Gsak but still single gpx files) but we got bored of writing every single thing down! Then we took out a nintendo DS with DS cache installed, this was quite helpfull but found it to be very buggy!.... but we STILL had to take a drawn out map of what order we were going to do!, and I managed to miss one of the caches because I didn't draw it on the paper. . selecting nearest cache isn't really helpfull tbh! I have now aquired a PDA (sony clie) that I have installed the trial version of "cachemate". I like it (might buy that one!) but we still have no MAP to view so we can't set our route. I'm really lost as to what I should be doing here. I mean, do I download all waypoints within 5 miles from my home location or stick to downloading them singularly. how do I plan a route without a map because sometimes it's difficult to stick to that route. any suggestions are welcome feels like we spend more time gathering the required info on the pc / gps / paper than we spend out caching
