  1. You're not that lazy. You put forth the effort to change your font and color.
  2. I also send them a polite message. This isn't helping to eliminate future problems with others though. It would more than likely be a full time job trying to send messages to everyone who makes this mistake. A large printed blurb on the correct way to reference the tag is all that it would take.
  3. Is there anything that can be done to the TB's page to make it more obvious that people should not be referencing the TB's "secret" number? I've seen several logs where people are not referencing the TBXXXX number, and are instead referencing the "secret" number. Maybe the top line of each TB page should have large bold print with a quick explanation as to why not to reference the "secret" number.
  4. I broke out my old Axim X5 and loaded GPXSonar onto it. It appears that I can not save my .GPX files to the SD Card. Has anybody found a work around?
  5. Now that's the best idea of I've heard yet.
  6. They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -Benjamin Franklin Funny you should ask. Why yes, I am right wing wacko.
  7. Exactly. I never log the TB's that I steal.
  8. Pluto's Cave Another one about 7 miles east of where I grew up. I've been to the end of this cave at least a dozen or so times. Cave In A mining shaft, not a cave. The Yreka area is full of old mining shafts. The high school mascott is the Miners! I've found a couple by accident while hiking. One had rails for carts in it even.
  9. Splunk A-12 I grew up about seven miles west of that spot. My wife, kids, and I visited my parents for Christmas this year. I love taking my oldest kids (5 and 2 1/2 year old boys) exploring. I took them up to that very cave, but had no idea there was a geocache hidden there until about a week after Christmas. How disappointing. I couldn't even log a geocache of a cave I used to explore as a kid.
  10. I've owned a Garmin 12CX for just over 5 years now. I can tell the buttons above the screen are fantastic. The unit feels very secure and I haven't really noticed my thumb covering the screen while pressing the buttons. Maybe those that complain about that have weird shaped hands? On 12/29, I ordered a 76CS, but I didn't like the size of the unit. I went to REI in order to handle the 60CS. The 60CS feels much less secure pressing the buttons with my thumb. This is due to the entire unit hanging off the end of my hand. I noticed that if I extended my index finger length wise underneath, the unit felt much more secure in my hand. Needless to say, I sent back the 76CS and the 60CS will arrive tomorrow. Yes, I know I will have less than half the memory, but I'm sure I can make do.
  11. Hmmmmm... That's something I didn't consider. It'll be VERY interesting to see if Garmin will do that. Have you contacted them to verify that they'll do that? That's what I said I was going to do didn't I? If I didn't know for sure, I would have preceded my comment with, "I'm hoping that I can...". Name withheld to protect the innocent at GPSDiscount.com told me to contact Garmin and explain my situation. Name withheld to protect the innocent at Garmin told me me to fax them the receipt showing that one item was exchanged for another item, and they would then issue a new certificate.
  12. Thanks GeoPirat. I actually found the 76CS difficult to slide in and slide out of the holder. This is with the 12V cord plugged in though. The lanyard always got in the way, and I always had to use two hands. I decided to go with the 60CS. No, the 76CS is not much bigger, and yes, it does have more memory. But I decided to draw a line, and the 60CS is on this side of the line. I will fax Garmin a receipt showing the exchange of the two units, and they (Garmin) will issue me a new unlock code certificate. This way, I will still have my second unlock available for a second unit.
  13. I know, I shouldn't need that assurance. I research these decisions too death. I have issues. I'm thinking on getting my Tech ham license, and am starting the research to death syndrome on figuring out which handheld to buy.
  14. OK. I didn't actually try that setting. I thought it forced it off immedietely. Thanks for the info. Roy
  15. Neo_Geo - This is exactly why I think the 60CS would work better for me than the 76CS. We don't buy these units for the basemap.
  16. I don't like this setting. I changed mine so it stays on. While driving down the backroads heading to a cache, I use the cigarette lighter adapter to power the unit. When I arrive at the spot where I will start hiking, I don't my GPS powering down when I unplug the 12V cord.
  17. I've been toying around with the idea of downgrading my 76CS to a 60CS, as mentioned HERE. GPSDiscount.com, the company I purchased everything from, said it would be no problem as long as I made up my mind by next week. The main thing I have against the 60CS is the lesser amount of memory. Has anybody ever figured out a way to upload Mapsource maps from a PDA to their Garmin? The map files alone (not any applications, just the map files), shouldn't be too hard to get to the PDA from the computer. But I'm not sure if there is a way to get the files to the GPS. This would be for when you didn't have enough room to load all of the maps to get you from your home to the trailhead, but didn't want to bring your laptop to change out the mapset, in fear of leaving it in the truck at the trailhead.
  18. Here's how to get to the bearing pointer. Compass Page --> press Menu --> select Bearing Pointer
  19. The Garmin website explains the differences between the 60CS' Americas Recreational Routable Basemap v2, and the 76CS' Americas Routable Basemap. The 60CS extends to the 75th parallel, where the 76CS only extends to the 72nd. Under standard map features, the 76CS has railroads, where the 60CS does not. Under United States, there is a considerable difference between the two. There is no Alaska on the 60CS, or perhaps it is just fit into the United States section. Under Canada, the 60CS is actually better because it has a higher parallel coverage. Mexico coverage is the same. I understand that I can load the Tide Maps in my 60CS on my own.
  20. Well, I looked at the difference between the two basemaps. Obviously, with 5MB of more information, the 76CS has more detailed information. However, this is easily taken care of by loading the maps of the area you are visiting. Then there is no need for the basemap. jotne- you slipped in there and said exactly what I was going to say. If you do a product comparison at the Garmin site between the 76CS and 60CS, you will see they both have serial interface.
  21. geobc - You mean, the two pins used for the serial connection (on the four pin power connection / serial connection port) don't go anywhere?
  22. I just purchased a 76CS with the Auto Navigation Kit from GPSDiscount.com on 12/29. I now have buyer's remorse and want the 60CS. Obviously, I have all of the boxes, paper work, etc., and I have not cut out the UPC code on the box, as I have not sent in for the $50 rebate yet. The unit is unscathed, but unfortunately, I have unlocked CS6 that came with the Auto Navigation Kit. I'm not sure how to go about selling both items, since CS6 has been unlocked. I'd like to sell everything for the price of a 60CS with the Auto Navigation Kit. The purchaser of my 76CS, could have the CS6 software out of the new kit (unlocked), and I could hang on to my old software, and use up the second unlock on the 60CS.
  23. Floating is no big deal to me. I just won't hang it over the edge of the water. Neo_Geo - Does anybody know what exactly is better between the two basemaps? 5MB of extra basemap features is quite a bit; what are they? I think I remember hearing that the extra features of the 76C/CS basemap are water (ocean) related. I'm not talking about the Marine Points Tide Station. That can always be loaded onto the 60C/CS. Thanks.
  24. I handled the 60CS at REI this evening. I like it's smaller size much better than my 76CS. 58MB is plenty for both US Topo and CS6 in Southern California. If I go on bigger trips, I'll have my laptop with me anyway. I can just change out maps at that time. Can anybody think of any reasons why I should keep the 76CS over the 60CS? Is there a chance that Garmin might be releasing the 60CS with more memory in the near future? I'd hate to switch now, only to find out I could have had the extra memory.
