  1. Could be I had 31s on my truck but went back to the original size last fall trying to improve my fuel economy, would love to try this one but don't think my Dodge is suitable in its present configuration. I also don't have a winch (yet, on the wish list with bigger tires )
  2. We will be arriving sometime Friday night and staying until Sunday camping I think with Galaad. For those that are camping, is there a group area or we should try to setup close together near the CEC side of the park. I will bring our FRS radios and monitor channel 2, see you there!
  3. I have had no problem with changing this battery in other equipment also, but have been hesitant to replace it in my GPS. Leaving it plugged in or set aside with fresh batteries has not fixed the problem in 3 years and other then the warning I have had no ill effects (unlike our PDA or laptop). I would leave it unless it is resetting each time it is off with no power source. Once I finally get around to sending mine in for all of my current problems, I have no plans on attempting this one myself. edit - spelling of course
  4. These units are glued (fused, no screws that I can find) together, altho I have cracked my partically open I have yet to take a look at the battery. Mine has been telling me that the memory battery (assume this is the one that you are talking about) is low since I bought it in 2002. I have yet to lose any waypoints, track logs or routes (think thats it for the memory, they have no maps). If that is all that is wrong with it, a warning when you first turn it on, but you don't lose any waypoints, then I would not mess with it, mine has been that way for 3 years. I am going to send mine in soon as the before mentioned cracked case, memory battery along with torn rubber and backlight out. It has been a great GPS tho, over 500 caches found with it, lots of abuse, drops and it still helps me find the caches. Night caching is more difficult with no backlight and I get worried in the rain with the crack on the top, I still love my GPS12CX, not sure if the model would make a difference over the XL.
  5. I think that it would not be a specific cache, it would be: find any cache, log it nude, and you get the requirements for a locationless. It wouldn't have a specific place, you can log it anywhere in the world. Of the locationless we have done, find a mural, post the co-ordinates, take a photo. Now you can go and find the mural with the co-ordinates I provided. With this one, it is more, do something at any cache location, but if I take the co-ordinates, I might not find a nude cacher when I visit, just did not think that was what a locationless cache was. I understand the concept, just not sure if it is a locationless, suppose it is more so as with the mural is at a location
  6. I might be wrong, but I thought a locationless caches was find something and log where it is. Once you have done this one and posted it, no one can go there and find you still there. Not sure if this can be considered a locationless, more of a do something or a dare.
  7. I have 3 Leatherman tools, the original PST, but I wanted locking blades so I went to the original Supertool which I love. Ended up with a second Supertool when I thought I lost one, turned up under the hood of my sisters car, left it there after I fixed a battery problem on the road one very cold night. Their service department is great, if you are in the Portland, Oregon area, just go to the plant and they have a direct exchange desk at the main entrance. I was there a few years ago, I asked if they had scheduled tours, which they did not. They did set up a personal tour of the plant for me and I saw how the tools were manufactured and at the time, the prototypes for the Juice series, excellent customer relations, best part of my trip was the tour. For service here in Canada they have a contract service depo in Oakville, Ontario. I have dropped off and mailed in my leatherman over the years, always excellent service and very quick turn around. Due to the service alone, I have not used any other multi tool.
  8. Just read this thread and am weary. The backlight died in my GPS 12CX on the way back Saturday night, so now I have a split rubber base (minor, does not affect anything), cracked case along the seam (dropped one to many times, works ok but not really water proof now) and no light (no more easy night caching), but the GPS still works good. Looking at the Garmin US site, looks like they have a flat refurbish rate, from reading this thread, seems like the Canadian depo does not. Laval is not far from where I work, but I do not want to pay a fortune. The refurb rate is $89US which is in line with what this unit goes for used (eBay prices are somewhat higher, if you can find this model). I can drop it off and pick it up, but if the bench rate is to high then sending it state side might be the answer, which one is in Laval and does anyone have their address and phone number?
  9. hhhhmmmmmmm, will have to look into the budget for this one, could be a plan.
  10. I like TCAN over TCDN, I am using TCH on my own cache near the highway, but cannot find it in a search using TCH, I wonder if there is a minimal numbers of letters or am doing something wrong?
  11. Hi CanadianHummer, 80Km East of Ottawa would put you somewhere near me I think (I live near the Quebec border, a little further East from Ottawa), there are some great caches in Ottawa and Montreal, depending on where you live, it does get sparce in between. There is an event in Ottawa on April 9th, Go and Get Em 6!!!, GCN292. You can meet some of the cachers in the area, some have the same GPS you have and give you some pointers. Good luck and welcome to the fun. Car37 & Holly
  12. We have used some of those containers from the dollar store, most have been replaced due to breakage, they do not fair well in the cold, plastic is to brittle. We have been swapping those out for the locknlock containers.
  13. I thought this was going to be about the cell phone found with co-ordinates given from the cellular provider. It also appeared the cell phone was off before they found it but I am unsure about that. Wish I could find tupperware as easily
  14. Going to have to look into them at Costco, what are the sizes? We have purchased a few multipaks but find many are really small. We found them seperate at Rossy for $3.99 each, abit pricey then the multi paks but you get to pick your size and they really last even in the cold winter. We have been switching most of our caches with them.

    Pm Problem

Guess we could change our name, I am sure you were not contacting us tho. This problem is most likely the forum software and might not be fixable by Groundspeak. I just don't want to change our name. We can send a PM, just not receive them. edit: To indicate that we can send, reply does not work tho.
  16. I tried Buxley's before and never found it useful, I just took a look again. Only difference between the up to date option on GC and Buxley's is I see the borders of the province. With my 3 provinces we tend to cache in, most of the caches are in the southern half with the northern half (except NB) showing fewer caches, with the only option to show the whole province, the caches are just bunched up at the bottom. I would like to have more detail on the GC maps instead of grey, but buxley's is no better with no zoom in option, actually is is less useful. I have been using MapSource and PQ's, this also allow me to only see the ones I have not found, less clutter. PEI and the 3 territories are not even shown on Buxley's. edit to add that not all of Canada is shown on Buxley's
  17. Hi plein air, What part of Quebec are you from? Even though we are in Ontario, our main caching area is Montreal and often along Highway 20 and 40 when we travel to visit family on the East coast. We are considering another get together soon, depending on my work schedule, in the Montreal area. I use a Garmin GPS 12CX and my better half has an eMap with MapSource Metroguide V4 and Topo Canada. We also use GSAK and MapSource to load our GPS units. On the road we use a PDA for paperless caching using Sonar and GPXview, trying to locate a cheap laptop for use on the road. I hope you can attend the next local event if we can get one together, always a pleasure meeting other cachers.
  18. Before I purchased my GPS, I changed the tires on my Truck to larger tires and a gear to adjust my Speedometer, never got around to changing the gear. When I bought my GPS I was surprised that my Speedometer and GPS always agreed. Well, 5 years and 100 000Km later it was time to change my bald large tires, due to money and wearing out my offroad tires on the highway, I went back to my original tire size. Now my Speedometer is 5Km/hour slower then the GPS, go figure. When I checked the label for the recommended tires for my truck, it calls for even smaller tires then what was on it when I bought it (I find the current tires look small on my 4X4). I figure they were the original tires and was an "at the dealer upgrade" since I had 76 000km on almost worn out tires upon purchase with a matching new spare and a date code matching the year of the truck. I trust my GPS speed more then my vehicles speedometer, our car is the opposite if crusing at 110Km/h, your really almost doing 125 - 130 which will get you a ticket so I use the GPS to set my speed.
  19. Right now we have a joint account, our cache finds more or less reflect my cache finds as my SO has not cached without me, I have 46 solo finds on caches she did want to go out and find (she does not like urban micros, night caches, difficult terrain and long multi/puzzle caches (she hates it when I say, "These are calculated co-ordinates, I might have made a mistake"), she does like a nice hike to a special location or finding that little jem of a park we did not know was there before). If she starts to go caching without me then I would like seperate accounts to reflect her cache finds and caching experience that would then be different them my own.
  20. I have to agree with the Smurf here, not you property, not your responsibility. Contact the cache owner or your local approver. I have removed a cache with the permission of the owner and adopted 3 others when the cachers moved away, but I contacted them prior to acting. I hate geo-liter myself, but the cache does not belong to you. If is in good shape, I would leave it, if it is trash, only then would I dispose of it.
  21. Have been thinking of it, but I don't really have the time to orchestrate anything with my working hours. A proper group would be nice, though I think it would mainly service/benefit city folks as there is a higher concentration of population and they can more easily get together &c. Us rural folks would tend to get left out due to excessive travel distances for regular gatherings. In consideration of this I would suggest two groups be considered, GWGA = Greater Winnipeg Geocaching Association, MGA = Manitoba Geocachers Association. Just some brief thoughts on the matter mentioned. PJ EDIT: Checked out your site, I really like the "Stash and dash" Cache concept. Must get one going here. Cheers mate. The Maritime Geocachers Assocition uses MGA for short form Maritime Geocaching MGA Forums Good luck in getting an association going, good way to meet new folks and put some events together.
  22. My border crossing experience is usually a good-bad-good-bad cycle going to the states, returning seems hit and miss but usually not much of a problem. Think we finally broke that cycle with the last crossing on Friday, had no problems either way. I did get my passport after my BC crossing to the US and flying out of the US back to BC in 2002, there was only 2 of us (did now know each other) without passports boarding and we both were hauled aside, frisked with the wand, they get kinda personal with those things. I am also cheap and had a few bottles of water, pop and sports drinks that were opened in my carry on, lucky I was thirsty as they made me take a drink from all of them. Honesty is the best policy, when I did have trouble they look up my record (found a warrant for someone with the same name, think that might have been to see how I would react), check my arms for tracks, ask me a series of questions in quick succession, repeating some questions posed differently to try to catch me in a lie. These are also both ways, often wondered what would happen if they did not let me back into Canada Never had my vehicle searched, the time they checked my arms I was on my bike wearing a black leather jacket, thats the same time they brought up the other guy with the same name and record. After he cleared me I asked "So, what did the other guy do?" his response was, "if it is not you, I cannot tell you, if it is you, I can, do you want to know?" I said, no, quite alright none of my business and went on my way. When crossing the border, have your ID ready when asked for, don't have any unnecessary crap in your vehicle, remain calm and be honest with your answers.
  23. PMing about the shirt order. They are still available though. The first anniversary is coming up in March. Still think I'll try to swing a "Get A Life Day" celebration meet and greet thing locally. The clip is in the news piece on the MiGO site: http://www.mi-geocaching.org/modules.php?n...rder=0&thold=-1 Should still be up, but the link may be dead. We never got any kind of response about this and although I continued to call for a while, they continued to blow me off. It's still infamous here and every now and then someone will show up with a t-shirt at an event with a home-made iron on of the newscaster with a no smoking type circle over it. We have more fun with it these days than angry feelings about it. Thanks for the info, unfortunately the & in our username does not allow a PM, email works though
  24. Are the T-shirts still available? I placed an order, received an email about my postal code, confirmed my address and never heard anything back to any of my follow up emails.
