  1. For Mega Scotland we found gifting a bottle of whisky to the farmer helped our relationship with him and kept him on our side Not been to Wales for a zillion years, looking forward to it, the site looks great
  2. Sums it up for us too. Not interested in clearing the local area, have hundreds of caches within a 10 mile radius but would rather go and do some really interesting ones further away. We can go to the close ones any time. Quite happy to walk 10+ miles and only find 1 box rather than step out of the car and there be several right there. Just our choice
  3. Hi Jim We are cachers from Falkirk, but not bikers. There are quite a few local cachers, might be worth posting something on the Scottish forums to see if any of them are bikers and can help out There are 3 main Scottish Forums Geofrees - http://geofrees.org/Forum/index.php Geox - http://geox.easyphpbb.com/index.php?sid=31...2f052c6b2f2a796 Ayrshire - http://gcayrshire.webs.com/apps/forums/ Carol
  4. We now have all the volunteers we need for the Mega Scotland event on 31st July. Thank you for all the offers of help, it has been really appreciated. I am compiling a reserve list if anyone wants to be added to that? We may still need some help at the camping event on Friday 30th July, if this turns out to be the case, I’ll post a note on the camping event page Thanks again Carol (Mrs I)
  5. Have resent the email tonight, let me know if you get it, will send it through your profile as well, just to be sure
  6. What about a mixed team, could always just make a team out of friends or caching aquaintences
  7. Thank you for all the offers, have dropped you all an email Thanks Carol
  8. Mega Scotland tug of war team is ready to take on all challengers. So come if you brave enough
  9. As Mega Scotland is almost here, we are looking for some volunteers to help out in the Dewar’s centre on 31st July. Specifically we need some help with registration between 10 and 12 and some assistance in our craft area between 12 and 3. Would be great if people could give us an hour to help out. You don’t need any special skills to do either, just a smile If you would be willing to help either reply to this thread alternatively feel free to drop me an email on MrsI@megascotland.co.uk Thanks Carol
  10. [quote name='Flyfishermanbob' Mountains!!!!! ..... snow !!!! freezing !!!!! Yeti's.. !!!!! Are you serious ???? If we keep getting this lucky with the weather and have a few more gorgeous sunny days like today, the snow will soon be gone from the tops and the yeti in hiding for the summer. Just think what the views will be like from the top you know that makes all the effort in getting up worth it
  11. Do international dogs bark in a foriegn language? sorry coldn't resist
  12. I don't have a dog or a teddy bear, Will mingle in with the crowds at the events and hope no one notices
  13. Whilst in Fort William, if you like a walk, would reccomend The Death of Power - GCJ3TZ just down the road in Kinlochleven.
  14. Before we let our premium membership lapse we had over 2000 caches in our ignore list. We enjoy harder cachers and those which involve a good long walk or a least a hill. We have never liked nanos or micros, have tried both and can only do the simplest of puzzles. So we moved all those we had no plans to do, out of sight. Most of our caches involve long walks and big hills, as these don't suit everybody they will be on lots of ignore lists, which we have no problem with. However Harrogate Hunters, none of yours were on our ignore list
  15. You'll be fine with the Haggis, it tastes much better than it should A lot of restaurants stuff chicken with haggis and cover it in a creamy whisky sauce, is delicious
  16. I know you said you're leaning towards researching the McDougal side of your family rather than the Campbell, however there is a Castle Campbell in Central Scotland, probably about 40 minutes from both of the main cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. There are a couple of caches near the castle, one much closer than the other, link below to the closer one. It is just a little castle, with none of the touristy trappings of Edinburgh and Stirling castle, but its one of our favourites, with a lovely glen to walk up to the castle and then options to walk further on up the hills if you want. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...02-e816a00ca493 Would reccommend the Cairngorm mountains, near Aviemore for some walking. There are some caches up them, we've never had good enough weather when we travel up to enable us to actually climb to the top of them. One is on Ben MacDui - 2nd highest mountain in Scotland http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...d8-af2628179c76 There is also the cache on Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britian, gets a lot of visits too. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...34-a7b2fa2cf1cf A must do cache, we would reccomend to anyone coming to Scotland, is the death of power at Glencoe. There are other good caches round there and again the area is linked to the Campbells. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...dc-c981f18a47fe Keep us up to date of your plans, and we'll see if we can help out. We prefer to be out in the country away from the towns too, however of the two main cities, IMHO, Edinburgh is more pretty and interesting and has more historic interest. There is great rivally between Edinburgh and Glasgow, so need to watch what I say.
  17. There was snow on the Ochils, at Stirling this morning, a lot lower and much further South than Ben Nevis. Not sure now would be a good time to go up, especially if unexperienced on the mountains. There are loads of other great caches and walks in Scotland, narrow down the area for us slightly and we'll see what we can reccommend.
  18. Can I suggest you post the same question on at least one of the Scottish Forums There's http://xsorbit27.com/users5/geofrees/index.php - (Definately Aryshire Cachers here) Or http://geox.easyphpbb.com/index.php?mforum=geox Thanks Carol
  19. arock&ahardplace and I have been discussing behavioural changes we have noticed in someone..................Hmmmmmm I wonder? And ...... Don't keep us all in suspense! ...................................................................And still we wait, come on share the goss
  20. A couple of years ago a new cache was posted on News Years Day around tea time. It was already dark but we knew a few people would try for it in the morning, following the festivities. So we headed off in the dark to find it. Our plan had been to find it, write a smart 'happy new year' comment in the log book, but not log it on line until the next day, to let others think it was still unfound. Cruel After walking through ankle deep mud the co-ordinates kept pointing us into a bunker on a golf course, so we trudged all the way back with nothing and ended up logging the did not find that night. We decided it served us right. The co-ordinates were updated following a another did not find. Serves us right for trying to be smart
  21. Works for us The ignore button is a great feature The details all in the planning before we set out, reading the cache page, reading the logs, looking at the posted photos, checking on maps for routes, terrain etc. We go for quality not quantity and would rather walk 10 miles and do one decent cache than drive 10 miles and find loads. Each to their own.
  22. We waited 8 weeks for 2 of our caches to be found. They've been out for over 6 months now and have had 2 and 3 visits respectively. A couple of years ago we did a cache by the cacher who was first to find these which had been out for just under a year with no visits. We tend to find we have 3 or 4 cachers who seem to find our caches and then it seems to be visitors to Scotland to find them. Don't archive them, leave them there people will come find them.
  23. We don't like nanos either and wish they came with their own category, although we don't do micros either, great thing the ignore button. Have to admit we did find a nano recently, was on a bike trail near us. There are varying size boxes along it, so something for everyone Not something that floats our boat though, the nano that is not the bike trail. Disaster Hope you find your GPS before next weekend, money on lots of nanos in Glendaruel
  24. Few of our favourites in Aviemore are, Balmenach Cache - GCK80Y - Right on the beach at Loch Morlich. 18 months ago there were women sun bathing here in September in bikinis. Kept the 3 males in the team amused once we'd finished canoeing. Plenty to do at this spot as well as the cache Strathspey No 5 - The Wolf's Lair - GCG256. Rothiemurchas estate is well worth a visit. As you walk around the Loch if you stand directly in front of the castle and shout across you get a great echo. Tends to make the wildlife hide, but still great fun. Still amuses the boys when we are there. Ryvoan - GCJBVN - The green Lochan is amazing, well worth the short walk on from the cache. We couldn't believe how green it is, apparently its something to do with fairies. We're in Aviemore several times a year but seem to spend too much time socialising rather than finding more caches up there.............
  25. The younger half of the team tend to moan before we leave home and in the car, but if the cache is on the hills, out in the wilds, involves climbs, stream jumping, a long cycle or making your own path, then they are up for it. ANything with a bit of adventure in it is right up there street. Our 13 year old has a few token moans but as long as he has his MP3 and is doing something he likes he is usually ok. he still likes a rummage through a well stocked box, but don't ask him to hunt for it if there are other people around and he might be deemed as uncool. Our 10 year still loves the challenge of the hunt and often puts his parents on a ban from hunting for a few minutes to let him find the box himself. Although he is willing to let his brother rummage through the box first occasionally, he is very competitive of getting the best swap possible. Neither boy, like their parents can find any enthusiam for micros and nanos or urban caches, so we don't do them. On the other hand if we are hiding a box our eldest will spend ages planning the hiding place and cammoflaging the box itself.
