  1. It should work. There could just be some issue with that particular track. Or perhaps the waypoint isn't close enough to the track to show up.
  2. Not really. There is the nuvi 500 and 550, which do paperless caching (although not well IMHO) but they are almost as old as the 260. I'd suggest a separate handheld and a nuvi unless you want to spend a lot of money on a Montana.
  3. It should do it, and actually better than the Legend HCx, in that the Dakota should give you time and distance based on track mileage rather than straight-lines. Try a different track. How are you starting to navigate a track? Where To? > Tracks?
  4. That sounds pretty good! What is a DEM map? Digital Elevation Model. The newer Garmin 24K topo series maps have it.
  5. It does better than that. Navigate a track and it will include any waypoints along it in a route. It will also (I think you have to have a DEM map loaded for this) create temporary waypoints for high and low elevation points along the track. You can set data fields to show distance to next and waypoint at next, and it will give actual track mileage to the next waypoint. I think it beeps too, but I'm not sure. It is freaking awesome!
  6. https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?21979-Sharing-Basecamp-Data http://networkedblogs.com/w5345 (in Dutch but you can paste the text into Google Translate) I use a simpler method, using Dropbox to store all my GPX files, so they are available from either my Mac or PC. I have a shortcut in Explorer/Finder for my Dropbox GPX folder, making it easy to access any of those files, but I haven't tried it with BirdsEye.
  7. I'd get the 450 instead of the 450t and add free 24K topos from http://gpsfiledepot.com. The Oregon will get you a high-sensitivity receiver (much better than the Legend Cx), paperless geocaching, a more intuitive interface and a few other nice features.
  8. The eTrex 20 is a good choice. The free 24K topos will serve you well, but Garmin has a PCT trail map that you might consider... https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=91299
  9. I fear this is going to become their stock answer. I'm already seeing other signs that this is the case.
  10. When you say "different profile" do you mean the settings under "profile" - in other words instead of "Hiking" put in Biking or Automotive? I'll try that and see what happens. Is there a firmware fix available from Garmin? Yes, but I've mainly seen it reported with the geocaching profile. Garmin is aware of the issue so we should see a fix at some point.
  11. There are some shutdown bugs in the last couple versions of the firmware. Try a different profile.
  12. DeLorme has had a change in leadership over the past year and they've let some people go. I have to wonder if they've dropped their commitment to handhelds.
  13. I was having the same problem a few days ago, but can't replicate it now. When navigating to a cache, from the map screen, pressing menu would cause shutdown.
  14. Are you only going to use it for caching? Driving? Biking? Will you be entering field notes or waypoints names with it? Those would all impact my recommendation.
  15. I'd go with the eTrex 20. It has GLONASS support and, from the reports I've seen of busted Dakotas, seems to be a bit more rugged.
  16. And the 60CS (unless it's the 60CSx) doesn't even have a high-sensitivity chipset. I doubt that your field experience with it will be very good. Can you return it? There are many better options out there.
  17. Yep, a phone call is the way to go. Email for me usually has a 24 hour turnaround to get an answer and if it takes several rounds of replies it will take days. Call them.
  18. It will work anywhere on the planet. The only advantage of the Magellans is preloaded street maps, and if you're willing to do a little work you can load those for free onto the eTrex 20. I can't think of any other area where the eTrex 20 isn't better than the Magellans.
  19. The other one to consider is the eTrex 20. No preloaded maps but there are plenty of free ones for it.
