  1. I think that the rules are restrictive too but that is because they are supposed to teach about geology, not all branches of science. I had misunderstood this until just recently. Considering that this is how the program was set up, you can hardly blame them for being restrictive. I think what we need is another classification, one for life sciences. OK, now who wants to start this adventure? :-)
  2. I didn't even know that they sent out pins in the first place. I have never gotten a pin. Maybe I don't quite understand the process, weren't they always for sale? Or are they not going to be for sale at all now? I was planning on buying the set once I reach platinum level. I only need to develop one more cache to get there. Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) there are lots of EC'ers in my area so I think we are fairly tapped out. I am still trying to find a good spot for my third. Well, anyway, thanks everyone involved for putting in the time and money. I think the EC program is great, with or without pins!
  3. No background at all. I just like to learn things and visit cool new places. Plus, I like rocks!
  4. Well I just submitted my first earth cache and am on pins and needles waiting to see if it will be approved.
  5. Touchstone, I tend to agree with you. Thanks!
  6. I am fairly new (less than a year) to geocaching and even newer to earthcaching. I am wondering about a situation I encountered and I would really like to hear an opinion or two as to whether the person who had listed the EC was inappropriate with their response. I did an earth cache with another party. This other party happened to be Creationists and believe in Intelligent Design. The sign that was involved in the cache requirements stated that this particular feature was several million years old. When the other party logged the answers to the questions required by the cache they stated that the sign had said _____ but it was contrary to their personal beliefs. They only made this brief statement, did not harass the cache owner in any way and their brief note was polite in tone (they sent me a copy of their email). The owner of the cache wrote a brief but nasty response and deleted their log stating that he didn't have time for Creationists. Now I REALLY don't want to turn this into a debate about religion or the origins of the earth. What I would like to know is, who is at fault here? Aren't we all entitled to our own beliefs? My friends had met the requirements of the cache, found the site, answered the questions, etc. Or was this simple statement of personal belief so inappropriate? I guess my feeling is that this person has taken their little bit of power in the situation and taken it too far. Maybe I am wrong. When I logged my visit to the site I simply stated the answer to the question because I wanted mine to count and didn't want to ruffle any feathers. But it just really bothers me how my friends were treated. Thoughts?
  7. I am just curious about what kinds of features make an appropriate venue for an earth cache. So many of the ones that I have seen have to do with rocks or water. What about trees in an amazing forest? An area that I am considering right now is an educational facility that teaches about the undeveloped prairie (plants, animals, etc.) since so much of our country has been developed and changed. Also, I have seen a bunch of earth caches around here that have to do with Lime Kilns. I just found a wood kiln especially used for the clay on the prairie. Would this work? I just hate to go through all of the work of research, finding coordinates, getting permission, etc. if it won't be approved. I am fairly new at this but I really want to get my platinum level! Unfortunately, I have found it hard to search through all the listings for other examples of earth caches. Maybe there is a better way to do this? Your advice on this matter would be appreciated, thanks.
