  1. Finally, a good article about GeoCaching that doesn't paint us as big-footed, rare-plant crushing, environmental bulldozers. icon_smile.gif

I always wondered if Jeremy notices more "hits" on the webpage after an article appears in the paper about GeoCaching. It would be an interesting "statistic" to see.

Well, I hope this good article brings happiness to new, up-coming GeoCachers! I know I love this "spobby" (sport & hobby).

  3. Hey All-

After following the discussion about the $60,000 GPS accurate to a cm (I can picture the logs now... "Found cache under 3rd leaf on the right..." or "How can I make my GPS display out to the 9th decimal place?" icon_smile.gif, I found a picture online of the unit...

PS. I think the guy on the right is reaching for the geocache before his buddy looks down and sees it... icon_biggrin.gif

Or, he's saying, "Acording to the GPS, the cache should be right here...."

  5. Not to change the subject, but I just thought of something...

You should change your Avatar picture to reflect the seasons, holidays, etc.

For example, in the winter, you could add earmuffs to "it". In the summer, have it wear a hat. During football season, maybe a helmet?

    I don't know. Just a thought... icon_smile.gif

  7. After reading this thread, I wonder if the "Post a Cache" page should be updated to possibly help the "almighty-approvers". icon_smile.gif

I've seen multiple posts where a persons cache was rejected, but after they emailed the cache approvers with a better description, it was approved.

I think there should be an added field that we can use when creating a new cache on this site. It could be labeled "Additional Info for the Cache Approvers". Here, we could give a better, more detailed description that we would NOT want posted on the actual cache page (could include spoilers, what's in the area, etc).

For example, on the reagular cache page, the location might look like a regular cemetary virtual. However, in the "Additional Info", the cache owner could say, "This is a virtual, and Lassie's final resting place is at the coordinates". You wouldn't want to give away on the cache page who or what was burried there, for example.

    Make sense?

I agree here, but I also think that "we here in the forums" really understand what the game of GeoCaching is really about. For example, when I find a cache, I rarely ever take something, but I always leave something. To me, picturing the next person finding the cool toy, polished rock, money from a different country, etc is more fun in my mind than taking something I would probably not use...

Also, it AMAZES me how many people don't log their finds on the web! I just recently hid my first cache and within a week, 6 people had found it. Wahoo! 6 People! So, I went to check on the cache to make sure it was still hidden well and stocked. When I read the logbook, 15, yes 15, people had found it! So, 9 other people had found it and probably took the cool stuff and left the used band-aid, the pinecone, and one other "dumb" item. Kinda bummed me out...

  11. I think JumpMaster is in his right mind to be upset with the situation he encountered. I know I would have been. He was walking in a public park, and a person with an ego problem gave him flack. What did JumpMaster do wrong? Nothing.

In fact, JumpMaster resolved the problem the right way. Your brain is a better weapon (unless you throw it icon_smile.gif ) than a gun. Even though JumpMaster might have had a weapon, he chose to talk his way out of the situation. My wife worked for the Sheriff's department and learned a lot about resolving conflict without force. It is amazing how easy it is to calm a person down using "reverse-psychology" on them. Sometimes it's even funny. icon_biggrin.gif

Also, I don't see anything wrong with taking a weapon (legally) while hiking alone at night. Twice I have been hiking and have had a bear within 50 yards of me. Luckily, both times the bear must have just eaten another geocacher, or I must have smelled bad, cause they both ran away from me.

I also think JumpMaster did the right thing by reporting it to the police. Now they know about this wierdo causing problems. Hopefully if he does it again, they'll do something about it. Think of it this way... How would you feel if it was your wife or a young girl, or your kids, that got approached by this guy??? It only takes one loser to mess up something you & your family like for a long time. (My neighbor was "verbally-abused" by a drunk outside her house, and now she's afraid to go outside when her husband is not around...)

    Anyways, Cache On!

  13. I would think that track support would be kinda handy.

For example, while geocaching, I usually leave my GPS on while walking around. It would be nice to be able to download my track log and see on the satellite image where I walked.

Also, I think this would be cool when golfing. If I leave my gps on and it records my track log, and then I could view that on a satellite image of the golf course, I could basically see where each of my drives went. I know, sounds corney, but you could imagine being able to compare last weeks round of golf with this weeks round of golf and see where I need to improve.

    Just a thought...

  14. Maybe the cache owner put that clue in as another clue. I mean, the phone number may be bogus and is actually a clue in itself.

There is a cache here in Fort Collins called "Do We Have A Clue?" and it says, "If you need help, here is a number to call: 831.03208".

I went to the coordinates, and it ended up putting me at the stairs of the local library... I looked around and couldn't find the cache. Then I figured it out. I'm at a library. The phone number looked funny. The name of the cache was a play on words, etc... I was then able to find the cache. This was one of the more fun ones I found.

Maybe the phone number the cache owner listed is posted on a sign near the cache and the hint is taped onto that sign? Or maybe the phone number is an alpha/numeric clue (1=A, 2=B, 3=C, etc)?

However, if it really, really is a cell phone number, I think the cache owner must have eaten one too many "happy" mushrooms on the trail. I would agree with everyone else here about having to call someone for a clue.... Dumb...

  15. I really like HamsterMom's idea. If there was a travel bug with some type of character attached (a stuffed animal, etc), and the person that had it did a "good deed", such as visiting kids in the hospital, walking dogs at the humane society, giving a presentation to the Boy/GirlScouts on GeoCaching, etc. A picture would be cool to record the situation. Then the cacher would post on the web what they did. After awhile, we all could vote on which one we thought was the coolest/neatest/nicest/etc. Maybe the winner could get an autographed picture of Jeremy or something...

  16. I have to agree with most people on this one. I think finding the perfect hiding spot, coming up with a theme, making the geocache, and watching what people post about your cache is just as fun as finding a cache or being the first one to a cache.

I think buying a premade cache is kinda like buying the premade peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches. Hello!?! How hard is it to make a PB&J sandwich? And now the Macaronni & Cheese that's pre-made and comes in a pouch. Where's the fun in that? I like to stir in the artificial powdered cheese product and watch the yellow noodles turn that funky color of orange. icon_razz.gif

I say we try our darndest to "non-comercialize" our great sport of GeoCaching. What's next? A webpage where you go and pick which size tupperware container you want to buy, and then get to pick from a list of 20 items which ones you want put into the cache? How will the way-cool quilt pieces or handmade items, or "personalized" items be part of the cache.

Anyways, I could rant, but I won't. I'd rather take the $20.00 (current bid) and make my own.

I would create a cache and place it real close to his home coordinates. I would name it the "Where-oh-Where have my deleted logs gone" cache. icon_biggrin.gif

Actually, I have to agree with Majicman on this one. Ignore the "negative" and focus on the "possitive". It's tough, trust me, I know...

I agree with what others have said, but I almost think that you really shouldn't do anything much. Just continue on like normal. If you find one of his caches, log it. If he deletes it, I would email him and ask, "Was there something about my log that didn't meet your requirements, etc?"

Unfortunately, it sounds like this guy has a bit of an attitude "issue" and is using you as a scape-goat. I remember in college, two best friends from high-school roomed together in the dorm. One of them played a little joke on the other one. Well, the other one got him back. This went back and forth for a few weeks until it got WAY out of hand and the pranks/jokes became more and more insulting/embarassing/destructive. Soon, they weren't talking to each other and one of them moved out, then dropped out of college.

My point is, I think if you "push back" on this one guy, he'll want to "one-up" you and will continue to remove your posts, email you unwillingly, and spreading untrue rumors, etc.

In your heart, you know that you have found his caches and logged them. I know the number of caches found/logged is kinda like "bragging rights", so having them deleted is like someone else getting the credit for something you did. But, you still know that you did it.

If none of that works, I'd TP his house... icon_biggrin.gif
