Anyone Else Find Something Illegal While Out Caching?
Clothahump replied to LCAS-271's topic in General geocaching topics
They do it because it's the correct thing to do. It's called integrity. -
My first was the closest to my home at the time. Since then, someone has placed a micro about 250 yards from my house.

No cacher is an island unto themselves, or are they?
Clothahump replied to Totem Clan's topic in General geocaching topics
Of course what others do affects you. Example - one person plants a cache that gets the bomb squad called out. Everybody in caching is negatively affected, guilt by association. -
How did you choose your Geocaching name?
Clothahump replied to Degai's topic in General geocaching topics
Clothahump is the name of the elderly Turtle Wizard in Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger novel series. -
Well, there was the day I was headed toward the second waypoint, when suddenly a wild boar about the size of a Greyhound bus (well, maybe a small VW) jumps out from under a bush. Fortunately, he wasn't being territorial. We both snorted and ran in opposite directions. Unfortunately, his direction was toward the cache. I don't know which one of us scared the more poop out of the other. I do know that I saw a trail of it where he had been running. I will remain silent about the area where I was running. For the rest of the trek, I was whistling loudly and banging my stick on trees in the area to forestall a second occurance.

Who cares? I have to chime in with the PRICELESS! chorus. Caching has taken me to places that I would never in my life have gone to otherwise.

Stumbled across a very large boarhog one day. Fortunately, he boogied off rather than be territorial.

Famous Quotes that could pertain to Geocaching.
Clothahump replied to El Diablo's topic in General geocaching topics
Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling, By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore, "Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou," I said, "art sure no craven, Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore -- Tell me where the cache is on the Night's Plutonian shore!" Quoth the Raven "Nevermore." Are you crying? THERE'S NO CRYING IN GEOCACHING! Trying to find waypoint you are, young Cachewalker? Do or not do - there is no try! New movie title: Snakes on a Cache. And probably the truest line: "Ohhh....that's gonna leave a bruise." -
And of course, there's "Veni, Vidi, Defeci". Also abbreviated as VVD in the logs. "I came, I saw, I failed." Roman way of saying DNF.

Dammit!! I found the first waypoint, but couldn't find the second. And I really wanted to score FTF on it.

CacheMate software question
Clothahump replied to His_little_lamb's topic in General geocaching topics
G'day Is this for the Palm OS? If so can you provide more details? I looked at the Cachemate website but nothing seem to jump out at me. Yes. I have a Zaire and I absolutely love Cachemate. It's so nice to dispense with the paper and just load up a couple of hundred unfounds and get after it! -
And an incredibly annoying one. If you want to believe that stuff, knock yourself out. But don't inflict it on others. I vote against the cache.

Murders and Geocaching...what do other states do?
Clothahump replied to guinea gal's topic in General geocaching topics
January 2006, I was out caching in George Bush Park here in Houston. There was a search going on for a missing college student at the time. He apparently went out into the park and committed suicide. If I remember the description properly, his body was found less than 1/2 mile from a cache that I had found that day. -

I use a 31 as well and love it. Get GSAK and install it. Download PQs, etc. into GSAK. Export your waypoints to a Cachemate PDB file. Do a Hotsync. Voila!

Looks good. I'd add in a cop/ a cloud of mosquitos / a snake / a boarhog / any or all of the above. -
What do you take with you when you go out caching?
Clothahump replied to RDLSTVD's topic in General geocaching topics
Backpack with swag bag, extra batteries, flashlight, DEET, more DEET, ziplock bags, compass, small first aid kit, extra pens and notepads, minor cache repair stuff, digital camera and at least one liter of water. Depending on the cache(s) I'm going after, I'll either take a 28 inch long piece of 1/2 inch pipe (my +5 Wand of Poking) or a 6 foot bo staff from my Taekwondo school (my +10 Staff of Poking). -

I'm of the group that says ignore the extra requirements. If there's a TB in the cache and you want to pick it up, go for it.
